It is a time of reflection as well as anticipation. In selecting this profession, as Ann Preston stated in her valedictory ad- dress in 1858, You decided for yourselves that here was a worthy and fitting challenge for your energies. These words are as relevant today as they were in 1858. The medical and science professions and you, face exciting and difficult challenges generated by the changes in health care and research. Your industry, with the support of your families, teachers, and friends has prepared you to meet these challenges with skill, confidence and courage. As you leave your Alma Mater, I encourage you to remember these words of Booker T. Washington: Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life, as by the obstacles which he has to overcome while trying to succeed. Hopefully, the fond memories of your many experiences at M.C.P. will remain with you and serve you well during your careers as alumnae i. On behalf of everyone at The Medical College of Pennsylvania, I congratu- late you and wish you well. We look forward to basking in your successes in the many years ahead. The President D. You agonized with me through every exam and celebrated all the little triumphs along the way. I hope I can repay you for your sacrifices and make you proud. To my brother, James E. Allen, M.D., for your inspiration and encouragement. You helped me keep things in perspective, helped me study, ordered me to relax, and demonstrated the joy and challenge of medicine as a profession. To Keith for filling my life with love. You gave me strength and patience when I was nearly out of both. After three long years of two phone calls a week, we can finally be together for the rest of our lives. Thanks for waiting. Christopher Isherwood The greatest poverty is not to live In a physical world, to feel that one ' s desire Is too difficult to tell from despair. Perhaps, After death, the non-physical people, in paradise, Itself non-physical, may, by chance, observe The green corn gleaming and experience The minor of what we feel. The adventurer In humanity has not conceived of a race Completely physical in a physical world. The corn gleams and the metaphysicals Lie sprawling in majors of the August Heat, The rotund emotions, paradise unknown. This is the thesis scrivened in delight, The reverberating psalm, the right chorale. One might have thought of sight, but who could think Of what it sees, for all the ill it sees. Speech found the ear, for all the evil sound But the dark italics it could not propound. And out of what one sees and hears and out Of what one feels, who could have thought to make So many selves, so many sensuous worlds, As if the air, the mid-day air, was swarming With the metaphysical changes that occur, Merely in living as and where we live. That I will lead my life And practice my art In uprightness and honor. That into whatsoever home I shall enter It shall be for the good of the sick and the well to the utmost of my power And that I will hold myself aloof from wrong And from corruption and from the tempting of others to vice. That I will exercise my art Solely for the cure of my patients and the prevention of disease And will give no drug nor perform any operation for a criminal purpose And far less suggest such thing. That whatsoever I shall see or hear of the lives of men Which is not fitting to be spoken abroad I shall keep inviolably secret. These things I do promise And in proportion as I am faithful to this oath May happiness and good repute be ever mine, The opposite if I shall be foresworn.
