Esterbrook Longmaid, III, M.D. Robert Van Derslice, M.D. 42 In Memory of Judith Mausner, M.D, Judith Mausner was my close friend and colleague from the time I arrived at MCP in 1971 until her death last November. We taught, investigated, and conducted departmental business together at that time. With our spouses we often spent time together at concerts and plays, in Chinese restaurants, birdwatching or even folkdancing, which Judith and Bernard and my wife did well, and 1, well, did. We admired Judith for her intelligence, her industry and her good common sense. We here at MCP were not alone in recognizing the value of her contributions. The publication of Mausner and Bahn ' s Epidemiology: An Introductory Text in 1974 and its widespread and continued acclaim was an expression of all these qualities. Judith was a member of or a consultant to many national and local committees and commissions as well as a Member of the National Board of Medical Examiners and Chairman of its Preventive Medicine and Public Health test writing committee. I thought I knew Judith Mausner well. Despite her declining health in the last two years I expected that she would complete work on the second edition of her text, wind up her research and leave everything neat and orderly, and she did. But I did not appreciate the modesty which may have been her most notable characteristic. It concealed so many of her good works and generous acts. Her only immodesty, which she would surely deplore, is evident in the void that she has left in the lives of her family, students, colleagues, and friends. Ira W.
