Labovitz, M.D. WMC ' 63 Dedicated teacher, physician, student. She tolerated no anion gap in adherence to honesty, intellectual integrity, hard work — demanding as much from her students as from herself. Coffee cup in hand, lab coat pocket bulging with patients ' cards, Betty was ever ready to patiently guide us as we groped our way through those complicated acid-base problems. Sensitive to academic tradition, she made manifest in her teaching the gratitude she felt for her own teachers. This was her gift to Woman ' s Med, MCP, her teachers, her students, her colleagues. It was a gift given with love, pride, and every bit of her strength. May it live on vigorously in all of us whom she touched — and be passed along with the same dedicated devotion. 41 In Memoriam David P. Dunn, M.D. Dr. Dunn touched many of us in different ways. In our primary contact with him as students, he taught us from the freshman through our housestaff years . . . lecturing in the first year course on Aging, lecturing and teaching in the laboratory in Pathology during the second year, making Neurology rounds during the third year, having senior electives in the fourth year, and conducting brain cutting conferences . . . sharing with us his knowledge and experiences. For those of us who had the good fortune to know Dr. Dunn beyond the day to day teaching activities, he was indeed a multi-faceted individual who related many fascinating stories. He brought together a unique blend of the independent spirit of a New Englander, the scholarship of a good education, the inquisitiveness of a researcher, and subtle humor derived from his Irish ancestry. Born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, he developed a love for the sea, ships, and whales. He told stories of carefree days, such as how he worked his way through college as a roofer, learning of the history of medicine, and enjoying diverse outdoor activities. In Micronesia, he studied scrapie, kuru, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He told stories of native feasts and strange foods, of scuba diving in tropical waters, of the native people and their neurological diseases. He had a love for people, appreciated their diversity, and sought to understand them. Upon completion of his training, he continued in his interests in people, languages, and foods. He read widely and had a lov e for books. He enjoyed sports and would chart baseball games on intricate scorecards. He enjoyed listening to radio talk shows and short wave radio. Dr. Dunn had been on our College ' s faculty since 1971. He will be very much missed as a teacher and friend. 44 Laws of the House of God I. Gomers don ' t die. II. Gomers go to ground. HI. MEMO TO: Rotation II Medicine Block This is to alert you to a recently defined syndrome of Post-Medicine Pseudocatatonia (J. Klinqhoffer, D. Kave, et al) . Basic pathophysiology appears to be related to the sudden cessation of neurotransmitter bombardment following 12 weeks of uninterrupted stimulation upon the neuroendocrine system. Lonc;-term prognosis is good once the hypothalamic thermostat is reset to normal level. Care must be taken, however, to carefully drain off or inactivate the tremendously high level of circulating neurotransmitters and oseudotransmitters to prevent dangerous biofeedback detonation - otherwise known as burning out the fuses or more simply burn-out . The following therapeutic procedure has been found to be highly successful and you are urged to participate in order to ensure an uncomplicated transition to Rotation III: SUNDAY BRUNCH January 24, - 1:00 p.m. at Dr. Klinghof fer ' s Home 356 Meadow Lane, Merion Spouses invited. May you softly go Before this place, and turn away your eyes, Nor seek to know the look of that which dies Importuning Life for life. Walk not in woe, But, for a little, let your step be slow. And, of your mercy, be not sweetly wise With words of hope and Spring and tenderer skies. A dream lies dead; and this all mourners know: Whenever one drifted petal leaves the tree — Though white of bloom as it had been before And proudly waitful of fecundity — One little loveliness can be no more; And so must Beauty bow her imperfect head Because a dream has joined the wistful dead. — Dorothy Parker Harriet S. May the lore for my art activate me at all times; may neither avarice nor miserliness, nor thirst for glory, or for a great reputation engage my mind; for the enemies of truth and philanthropy could easily deceive me and make me forgetful of my lofty aim of doing good to Thy children. May I never see in the patient anything but a fellow creature in pain. Grant me strength, time and opportunity always to correct what I have acquired, always to extend its domain; for knowledge is immense and the spirit of man can extend infinitely to enrich itself daily with new requirements. Today he can discover his errors of yesterday and tomorrow he may obtain a new light on what he thinks himself sure of today. O God, Thou hast appointed me to watch over the life and death of Thy creatures; here am I ready for my vocation and now I turn unto my calling. 228 Oath of Hippocrates I do solemnly swear by that which I hold most sacred that I will be loyal to the profession of medicine and just and generous to its members. — that I will lead my life and practice my art in uprighteousness and honor. — that unto whatsoever house I shall enter, it shall be for the good of the sick to the utmost of my power, holding myself aloof from wrong, from corruption, from the tempting of others to vice. — that I will exercise my art solely for the cure of my patients and will give no drug, perform no operation for a criminal purpose even if solicited, far less suggest it. — that whatsoever I shall see or hear of the lives of men which is not fitting to be spoken, I will keep inviolably secret. These things I do promise and in proportion as I am faithful to this my oath may happiness and good repute be ever mine, the opposite if I shall be foresworn. 229 1983 latrian Staff Editor-in-Chief Harriet S.
