Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1982 volume:

I  H I 4. m The Medical College o£ Pennsylvania IATRIAN -- The challenge of medical school has asked each one of us to draw on untested strength. The support of our family and friends, given so freely, has been the source of this strength. The people we love and believe in have given us the encouragement and inspiration to continue when we were past weary. We have thanked them many times, but we let so many other moments pass by when we could have said how very much we appreciated their love and support. And so, here we are, scarcely finished one challenge before beginning another. We would like to dedicate this yearbook, a small slice of what our lives have been like for the past four years, to our loved ones. We want to take the opportunity to thank them right now, for all the times we could have and did not. Without them we would have crumbled long ago. Medical education is not completed at the medical school; it is only begun. Hence it is not only the quantity of knowledge which the student takes with him from school which will help him in his future work; it is also the quality of mind, the disciplined habit of correct reasoning, the methods of work, the way of looking at medical prob- lems, the estimate of the value of evidence. William H. Welch 1 982 Iatrian 1982 Iatnan Desiderata Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surren- der be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with oth- ers you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser per- sons than yourself. •mmrrr- ■., ■ Ull ffi DJ _Ji£i_W- J 1 i u ml _ite_fc_rt J — . l.L III ' : 1982 Iatrian 1982 Iatnan 6 1982 Iatrian Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. The knowledge and skills you have acquired here at MCPhave earned you, as physicians, privilege to have profound influence upon the well being of those who will become your patients. You will help sustain the lives of some, ease pain and bring comfort to many, and give hope to others through research and the development of new technology. Yours will be a spe- cial and honored role; to preserve and enrich life, and to preside over its beginning and its end. I would like to think that you will each carry with you, on your separate paths, special memories of our College . . . perhaps of a patient for whom your care meant a difference, or of a teacher who fired your imagination, or one whose dedication inspired your own commitment to the continuing search for knowledge. Surely you will hold in memory the com- radeship, the joys and the anxieties you shared here with your friends, your classmates. For all those who touched you in your years with us, I send to each of you our best wishes and our thanks for your personal and enduring concern for this Col- lege today and tomorrow. Maurice C.
