No time in our lives will leave a more lasting impression than the medical school years. They were the first definite crystallization of long- held ambition that for some was definite; for others less well-defined; for all, imbued with love and concern about the problems of people. They were the last situation where individuality was, of necessity, schooled to a common offering, linking us together in a way deeply enriched by the variety of approaches we brought to it. More pain, joy, contentment, depression, fun, and hard work was our experience as medical students than is the experience of many in a lifetime. Heights of wisdom and sacrifice were demanded and, somehow, accomplished that lent us a new depth of character, an ability to cope. Best of all, embarking on the closest of relationships, that of the doctor and her patient, was the beginning of the most rewarding opportunity offered us in life. It is our sincere hope that all the myriad of emotions and attitudes we have entertained will be represented in this edition of the IATRIAN, so that, in years to come, the fresh enthusiasm we now feel will be renewed and our motives revived whenever we browse through it. It will also preserve something of our particular class spirit for all our friends we will leave behind. Bones, bodies, brains, B. O., biochemistry, basic physiology and biophysi cs, bull sessions, bad exams, bitter post-mortems, big books, bald professors, bang- ing colored pencils, blunt instruments, borrowed time, baggy eyes, budding friendships, boring week-ends. BOYLESS SOCIETY, bottomness of the totem pole (again!), Mrs. Barber ' s wig — this was freshman year. Suddenly, college seemed as remote as kindergarten; why had we ever thought we had a lot to do? But there were high points such as: receiving a real stetho- scope, ordering a name tag that actually said Dr. So and So , the first patient contact in those afternoon CPC ' s, starting close friendships with advisors, com- pleting embryology projects. Once we were sure we had passed and stopped to muse a little, we realized we would never be the same carefree young girls again! Papers galore, and then what ' s more ... we even have to pass the Boards to stay. All you darn professors, on our knees we implore; When you review cases, please don ' t show us the door. So it ' s no news, that we ' ve got Second Year Blues on Henry Avenue. Diane Stover, Sandy Mann Elaine Haagen, Maria Ross, Yvonne Butterfield, Fran Durocher, Suzanne Harwood 33 Cathy Sladowski, Marsha Wolfson Oh, they made us stay in Micro, 1 P.M. to setting sun — every minute planned with useless things to do. Boring lectures taxed our eyelids e ' er the first words were begun. Our frustration, bounds nor limits never knew. Dr. Miller smiled so sweetly as she chained us to our desks and she told us Fairy Tales with greatest ease. Of the pranks of Typhoid Mary and relaps- ing fever ' s joys. And the incidence of syphilis in Greece. Dr. Knight sure knew his fungi, his rick- ettsia and T.B. — and his movies were so old they barely talked. Flame ze loop. don t break ze agar, and, my God. don ' t write zat down. At the hundred-fiftieth virus, we all balked! Senior in the morning. She is in the limbo between basic science and ac- tual clinical responsibility. Her passwords are a thorough history and physical (in- cluding a rectal exam) and basic patho- physiology. She is told she is a working member of the medical team, but she is the last to see the patient, cannot be paged for rounds or discussions, is unable to reach the floors until after nine o ' clock when all the procedures are already done and therefore spends what time she has left begging for some attention from the overworked house staff. Special junior conferences further remove her from the mainstream. How does one survive! But the thrill of answering to Doctor , of scrubbing in the O.R., of knowing that she is more than halfway through and of applying the stacks of lectures to the practice of medicine offer their own per- sonal rewards. And when she has sur- vived the marathon of exams at year ' s end, she is nearly home. Although many standards change and new opportunities arise, this basic purpose of the Zeta Phi Fraternity remains true. The Beta Chapter was chartered in 1903 to join with the Alpha Chapter of Syracuse University so that it might promote the bonds of a fraternity for the women of the medical profession at that institution. Other chapters, in Boston, New York City, and at Johns Hop- kins, in Baltimore, followed. Since those early days, the Fraternity has grown; characterized by sincerity and earnestness o f purpose; by courage and strength; yet unfailing gentleness. Zeta Phi ' s home, in Philadelphia, has been located on Fox Street for many years. It houses the traditions of those who came before us and the scent of many, now-honored and beloved women of medicine — Drs. Catherine MacFarlane, Alma Dea Morani, Mary De- Witt Pettit. Many of our present faculty were Zeta members — Dr. Jean Gowing, Dr. Doris Goodman, Dr. Anne Pike, Dr. Anna Brady, Dr. Jean Forest and Dr. Rhoda Pomerantz — to name a few. It is the wish of Zeta that its members and all the women of medicine enjoy the completeness and perfec- tion in medicine that these women have achieved. Here are some of the words she muttered as she dragged her body through the halls: Dear kindly Dr. Beasley, you ' ve got to understand! It was a lousy scalpel, that ' s why I cut my hand. It looks so very bloody. I think I ' m gonna faint. Oh goodness gracious, a doctor I ain ' t. Dear kindly Dr. Beasley, this body stinks like hell. I brought my aerosol, but it doesn ' t work so well. The adipose is melting, the flies are getting thick. Of molds and maggots, you can have your pick. Oh, help me Dr. Beasley. I ' ve got a mental block. I ' ve tried to learn from Morris, from Ransom and from Clark. I looked it up in Woodburne ' s and checked it out in Grant ' s. Dr. Beasley, we ain ' t got a chance. Oh, hurry Dr. Beasley. I think this one ' s not dead. I only poked his nostril but then he moved his head. It ' s not that I ' m so squeamish, oh won ' t you under- stand. My goodness gracious, now he moved his hand. I know a place where the sun never shines and it ' s in Physio. I hear an axe and the head ' s usually mine, in Physio. They won ' t help us in the lab even tho ' they ' ve seen us. The only one who gives a damn is Freddie DeMartinis. We ' re so depressed each Saturday morn when we flunk a test. It ' s misery with Masoro. When we met Voci, our blood pres- sures rose when he said Seestolee. Urbach agreed — no chest leads for our EKG ' s. In the interest of science, we were truly blessed — when Ed Fetherolf offered up his chest — Small Lead!!! We ' ve shown in lab that pyramidal lesions cause flaccidity. Clinical men, they do not agree, they say spasticity. Everything we learn in class is strictly up to date. Hurry up and lecture before it is too late. OOPS!!! Too late! ' ! Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your urine flow? Acid or basic? Did you remember to taste it? So who the hell wants to know? 45 SECOND YEAR: - second prize TO THE TUNE OF BOOTS : You keep saying we must do our best! Quite impossible, teach ' , you must confess. You ' ve been testing when we should ' ve been studying. And now we ' re really getting quite upset! Those Boards were made for passing, And that we hope we ' ll do! One of these days this class is gonna walk right out on you! Dr. Norkin, you ' re your own best fan. A better name for you is ' Stan the Man ' . You think you alone are in command. But Freedman always gets the upper hand! The slides we all did hate. Your dirty jokes were great! But you think we ' re all frustrated. So we ' re walking out on you! Dr. Dubin, we think you are the best. You killed us with your round-ups and your tests. You filled our minds with hemochromatosis, Ideopathic jaundice and necrosis. You ' ve made us all big boozers. Our livers now are losers. And in hepatic coma, we will flap right out on you. Oh, Dr. Stapleton is Johnny-on-the-Spot. In Physical Diagnosis, he is hot. He plays lub-dubs until we ' ve had our fill. But we would really rather feel a thrill. The reason it ' s so muddy — we have no time to study. So we ' ll just flunk the final. And we ' ll gallop out on you. Spencer Raab thinks blood is really swell. He sure is after ours. Oh, we can tell. Why else on top of all that we ' ve been through, Would he announce a test and smile and chew? To make it better still, this Monday is the kill. Oh, Spencer Raab, you slob, we ' re gonna bleed all over you!!! Oh, Dr. Harris sure can auscultate. To him consolidation ' s really great. Ronchi, rales, a cough, egophony. Comprise the Harris pneumo-symphony. To us it ' s all confusion. To hell with pleural effusion! One of these days a patient ' s gonna sneeze all over you! TO THE TUNE OF BEEP-BEEP : A man named Johnny Stapleton — who had a tape-machine Played lub and dub and dub and lub to show us what they mean. Rumbles, roars and even snores, Perhaps a click or two. But we can ' t hear Si or 2 So what are we to do? DIGITALIS — TO THE TUNE OF HALLELUIA CHORUS : Digitalis, Digitalis, Digitalis, Digitalis — to you we give all hail!!! Digitalis, Digitalis, Digitalis, Digitalis- — there ' s hope within the vail!!! For the congestive heart that ain ' t pumping — just do your stuff and it will start jumping!!! Digitalis, Digitalis, Digitalis, Digitalis!!! But though your course is sure, we still must be mature, And see what side-effects you can produce, or help induce. A-V Block . . . can be partial or complete, tachycardia, skip a beat!!! G.I. Signs . . . anorexia, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, frequency!!! Neural Signs . . . vision blurred, convulsions, fatigue and malaise!!! Arrhythmias . . . bigeminies and P.A.T. But the patient can live forever and ever. High potassium. Low calcium. Quinidine. Diuretics. Best of all— D I G I T A L I S WeloveyouDIG !!! THIRD YEAR: - first prize TO THE TUNE OF IT IS NO SECRET : Our lovely Dean gave out the news — another girl is through. We all know she flunked. Was that someone you? You may have longed for one more chance, your status to renew. You might as well forget it . . . for we have news for you. Chorus: It is no secret what they can do What they ' ve done to others They ' ll do to you. With arms wide open, they ' ll kick you too!!! It is no secret what they can do. They coddle us and smile and claim that someday we ' ll be great. But don ' t let down your guard or you ' ll never graduate. They ' ve got a file including every goof you ' ve ever made. The way you wear mascara is counted in your grade. TO THE TUNE OF THE HALLS OF IVY : As I view the new brick building — standing there majestically High o ' er the Schuylkill Highway — it cries out to you and me. Oh, will I ever open? Oh, students will I see? I surely won ' t believe it — Until 1983. Nine floors it offers you — with new equipment too!!! And added space for things you now can ' t do — Like eating after three, and sleeping comfortably The nights you ' re on OB or Surgery!!! We dream of new horizons, to be Seniors in that wing. But we know it just won ' t happen ' ere we graduate next spring. So stand there oh great building, the answer to our prayers And if you ever open we ' ll all need our rocking chairs!!! TO THE TUNE OF GOD SAVE AMERICA : All hail Urology— Hail K and K They ' re devoted to manhood. With a T.U.R. they ' ll often save the day If you ' re strictured or obstructed. Or your Foley causes pain. Kendall and Karafin Relieve the strain They make you feel like a man again. From the kidney to the bladder to the prostate and from there. Kendall and Karafin take such good care. So hail Urology- — and — enjoy your affair! TO THE TUNE OF TWO TO TANGO : If you want to deliver with Pike — she ' s as hyper as a high-flying kite. If you want to deliver on your own — Dr. Clifford will deliver you by phone. If you don ' t care how long you are there — ask for Liebfricd ' s meticulous care. If you want to have children at will — Dr. Laufer never will prescribe the pill. It takes two to tango — two to tango Two to really get the product of romance. You did the tango — did the tango Now you ' re here with us!!! If you chose Celebre — don ' t despair. She ' ll arrive after styling her hair. If a natural delivery you prize — Dr. Hughes will hypnotize you with his eyes. If you want a real bang-up affair — Dr. Young will provide Texas flair. If in labor, you ' re hungry and blue. Martha B. will share her pizza pie with you. TO THE TUNE OF SUGARTOWN : They can ' t read my FBS. My pancreas is one helluva mess. I flunked my glucose tolerance test. I ' m in a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-cidosis. My glycolytic cycle ' s totally bound. My FFA ' s are running around. In my liver no glycogen ' s found. I ' ve got ke-ke-ke-ke-ke-ke-ke-ke-ke-ke -ke-ke-tosis. 47 TO THE TUNE OF MAME : When you give a lecture at noon, June, We always know it ' s autoimmune, June. We get hypersensitive — simply at the mention of your name. Those L.E. cells agglutinate; it ' s your claim to fame. Do your jaundiced patients have a still, Phil? Are they all taking Gelusil, Phil? We know it ' s liver necrosis — simply at the mention of your name. Is it extrahepatic, or is it cholestatic? Are you spiking their pills, Phil? You see all your patients on a view-box, Fox. Renal angiography is a paradox, Fox. I want a barium enema simply at the mention of your name. You ' re always working in the dark; yea, you ' re quite a dame. You may think that we ' re just having a laugh, Staff. But we ' re worried! Next year you ' ll just be half, Staff. It seems teachers are leaving, simply at the mention of their name. I wonder who will still be here — when we return to school next year. We ' ll treat you to a case of beer — but with your all not coming back- We ' ll only need one lousy six pack. ft TO THE TUNE OF HAPPY TOGETHER : Imagine Jim and me, I do! I ' d work with him both day and night It ' s only right, to think about his bedroom eyes And hold him tight, standing together. I can ' t see me loving nobody but Bugs — and his black box. When you sound me, Bugsie, your box will be bright — Turn out the light!!!! I can ' t see me loving nobody but Dave. I ' d be his slave. When he asks What ' s hot at the V.A. , I cry, It ' s only I!!!! When Voci auscultates, I ' d bear my chest To hear him say he feels a thrill — I ' d do my best Imagine Boland ' s hand on mine So very fine, scrubbed in together. Me and Spence, and Spence and me No matter how you curl your hair It has to be. The only comb for you is me, and I will be Running my hands through. Imagine me and Ray. I ' d fall for him. I would do most anything to wear his pin. I wish that fate would go my way, And we could be — casted together. TO THE TUNE OF BEETHOVEN ' S FIFTH : We need to see — his E.K.G. . . . His QRS is long . . .Its axis is all wrong And there ' s this shift in his ST . . . He ' s not in Dig, it has to be . . . LV hypertrophy. Look at this lead . . . With diastolic pause The cycle starts again — THEN And he ' s in failure too!!! Does he have diffuse carditis . . . Much resistance from stenosis ... Or an increased output state These reduce the S-L ratio, then, there ' s less systolic emptying And with more residual blood, there ' s dilitation, pressure elevation and re- duced CO Now what is this we spy? THE OATH OF HIPPOCRATES swear by Apollo, the physician, and Aesculapius and Hygeia and Panacea and all the gods and goddesses, that according to my ability and judgment, I will keep this Oath and this stipulation: to reckon him who taught me this Art equally dear to me as my parents, to share my sub- stance with him and relieve his necessities if required, to look upon his offspring in the same footing as my own brothers and to teach them thi s Art if they shall wish to learn it, without fee or stipulation; and that by precept, lecture and every other ' mode of instruction I will impart a knowledge of the Art to my own sons and those of my teachers and to disciples bound by a stipulation and oath, according to the law of medi- cine, but to none others. I will follow the system of regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patients, and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous. I will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked, nor suggest any such counsel. With purity and holiness I will pass my life and practice my art.
