III f «t i 1967 IATRIAN WOMAN ' S MEDICAL COLLEGE OF PENNSYLVANIA Students today, physicians tomorrow. Tomorrow may humanity benefit from the Knowledge we have acquired today. We have learned that the power to heal comes not from the intellect alone but from the heart as well. DEDICATION There have been many innovations at Wom- an ' s Medical College in the past four years. Some have been the contributions of one man. This in- dividual, a man of action and enthusiasm, will be remembered by us all. Yes, Doctor Bouzarth. In spite of your busy practice, active research, and numerous delegations, you still have time for the students. Each of us recalls, with nostalgia, her big day in dog lab as chief surgeon, giving orders to the whole surgical staff. Each of us is also very grateful for the financial aid that made possible our school newspaper, a long awaited means of student expression. Your lecturing and your training in the han- dling of emergency situations, such as mass casu- alty and severe head trauma, has been so thor- ough, that we feel confident we can act quickly to meet such situations, when the occasion arises. Who of us will ever forget, No skull x-rays at night (at WMC), dilatation, dilantin — stat — 100 mg. I.V. and If you have any questions, call me at any time. Yes, Uncle Willie, your humor and even your ire are a part of us now. William Francis Bou- zarth, with respect and affection, the class of 1967 dedicates their book to you. TO THE SENIORS In 1964, you and I were first- year WMC students together. You worked to gain the knowl- edge, skills, and personal attrib- utes to qualify for the title of Doctor; I to learn more about the special opportunities and problems of women medical stu- dents and physicians, in order to help make WMC truly the place where fulfillment of those oppor- tunities can begin, and where so- lutions to those problems can be found. We have all made progress on our self-appointed tasks; we still have much ahead of us. Let ' s wish each other success. On behalf of all the faculty, administrative officers, and the Board of Corporators, I want to say to each of you Best wishes for a successful career. Glen R. Happiness is a stenowriter Here it begins — the thoughts we had about how it would be — the stories we were told about how it was. Bones to memorize! Dissection and more dissec- tion; slides to study. Which anatomy text to use? Gray ' s is more colorful; but Mor- ris is more clinical; Grant ' s, more con- cise. This medical terminology — who can understand it? Embryos — yellow, red, blue. Chickens, who cares about chick- ens? And if that ' s not enough, Kreb ' s cycle intermingled with valsalva maneu- vers and swallowing nasogastric tubes! But we did swallow — and swallow — and swallow until year one faded i nto omi- nous stories that we now tell about how it was. Did I send in that picture? . g ' 27 r . •. a ■But Dr. Knowlton, Dr. Dewey Man, that ' s quite a course in human development The pyramidal tract is red, the reticulospinal tract is yellow, the vestibulospinal is green ... or is the vestibulospinal sup- posed to be . . .??? What shall it be — coffee of embryo? But Sue, the third arch has to be there some- where! Speak no histo, see no histo, hear no histo I see, you see, we all see — but what? Could it be possible that we are to go to a room other than 403C? Kathy. all you have to do is picture the inside of an oscilloscope and then . . . So what else can you do about those disulfide bonds? ' Games according to Guarino et al The gospel according to St. Barr dictates the frog is pithed thusly. 30 Those old exams don ' t help Time for Sid ' s happy hour. I can ' t read her notes either. SECOND YEAR We enter the second year — hopes of something better, something more. More memorization, more discipline, more exams; but still not one glimpse of a patient. Pathology with its round-ups, and never ending slides. Micro with its decoded unknowns and sterile labs. Pharmacology with its short-acting stimuli and long-acting bladders. Psy- chiatry, surgery, ob-gyn-so what! Physical diag- nosis — there ' s hope! And then finally, the day of reckoning slowly dawns. Throughout the school we roam — clean white jackets newly purchased, black bags proudly held. At last we see the first patient — our classmate! LSD even makes pathology lab fun. 31 Are you sure this is from my blood? What if I get a MAN for a patient? r fi 4 v ' ■PK fl  S- 111 P ' - Who ' s turn for round-up today? 32 You ' re the darndest class — at story time. They ' re going to draft women now? Five what? Who has time for sleep in second year? V 33 Let ' s see if he can get this one right. Wonder what he ' d look like with a moustache. o . « tat ' Poke reflex A petri dish for posterity. 34 THIRD YEAR The Stork Club Are you a Doctor? No, I ' m a nebish. I mumble as I bashfully bumble into the room of a poor unsuspecting soul, who ' s only been plagued and poked three times prior to my blundering assault. This won ' t take long, ' I say defensively to the patient as I stoop for the third time to retrieve my yellow sheets and mimeographed instructions. Four hours later, a physically exhausted, mentally distraught, full bladdered, hypoglycemic patient with tics requests my humble opinion as to her difficult diagnosis. I re- spond with utmost confidence that she will be the first one to know what she has after I have confirmed my findings with the resident ' s workup. While I ' m secretary, I ' ll assign patients by the thumbtack method. Meet Dr. Cara Monti. Let us at those patients! Guess who was on last night? 35 At the What Not Shoppe you can ' t eat decently for under a dollar. And after they fixed this room up, they told us we couldn ' t use it anymore. Will the awake student please stand up? 36 Once upon a time in the great deep forest lived Smokey the Bear. Let ' s see if we have a SAMA representative in Kuala Lumpur. Dr. Madow, would you define ' post-Christmas Vacation Brain-slump syndrome ' ? 37 STUDENT COUNCIL Barbara O ' Pray. Vice-President; Ann Vogel, Secretary- Treasurer. Millie Y. The comic relief we created with our own imagination in those first three years enabled us to suffer through the drudgery of anatomy, the tyranny of physiology, the paranoia of public health, the egotism of biochemistry, and the full bladders we endured in pharmacology. a a a iU i Looks aren ' t everything.
