kst . . . For, if a doctor ' s life may not be a divine vocation, then no life is a voca- tion, and nothing is divine . . S. Paget Chief Champion-. Dr. June F. Klinghoffer is an alumna of the Woman s Medical College of Pennsylvania — and therein lies the cornerstone of her appeal to many of her students. How appropriate it is to salute one who sat in the same seats, listened to the same lectures, trod the same halls and with whom we share the degree Doctor of Medicine. Would that we, in years to come, as we continue to draw comparisons between our lives and hers, as we emulate her equanimity, wit, dignity, enthusiasm, interest, support and above all, her empathy with students — would that we are not found lacking! With deep appreciation of what she has given us and in anticipation of how her example will continue to guide us, we dedicate this book to: DR. JUNE F. KLINGHOFFER TO THE SENIORS: We all want to share your sense of achievement that you may now be known as a physician and proudly answer to the title Doctor . We confidently expect that each of you, in whatever field ' you may choose, will strive to be the very best, one whom we will always be proud to claim as ours. In turn, we pledge that the Woman ' s Medical College will continue to strive to be an Alma Mater that will deserve your pride and affection. I want to extend to each of you my personal best wishes for a successful career. Glen R. Leymaster, M.D. President and Dean DORIS G. BARTUSKA, M.D. Assistant Dean DOROTHY L. PEI SER, M.S. Vice-President for Development c I A A D V I S R And to the class of 1965, may we be so bold as to say you are the envy of those who know. You have the optimism of youth coupled with the best medical education we could provide. Synthesize these with compassion and inquisitiveness and you are truly on your way to being a good physician. You have been blessed with talent and opportunity. Reap the warm glow of returning in some measure the portion of your blessings to those less fortunate. Patients quickly developed olfactory hallucinations that it smelled where-ever they went — oddly enough, patients lost this hallucination, but everyone else at WMC developed it! Patient had no chills or fever, but was frequently in a cold sweat; food intolerance developed for all but coffee and cigarettes; distress was relieved by: sleep, a night out, and a P in a mental exercise. Patient was becoming paranoid until she heard that this was all bilge in her little black box. caused by confusion in the purple dots. MARCIftCOU-lHS PstRicir ftlLUR = m About mid-way in her illness, patients ' symptoms shifted and became focused on the urinary tract — she insisted upon saving urine! Urine-clean catch, urine for specific gravity and urine for Kjeldahl. There was also a recurrence of G-I symptoms as patient put special diets, (and tubes!) into her esophagus. Patient experienced an all too brief respite from her symptoms during one hour per week when she focused her attention on neoplasia. In reviewing her case, patient feels the following exacerbated her symptoms: the eighty-seven layers of the eye, the intrauterine development of the ' ' haart. and the s-l-o-w descent of the testes; all subjected to an epidemiological analysis It was restorative for patients to project themselves into the future as they watched forty-four women become DOCTORS. All symptoms continued to recede over a period of about three weeks, at which time they were dra- matically removed by the printed words — You are recommended for promotion. a Mtf 6ARKER tf ftKEN LftUKOrf A- EftfSoK- bsR fww O ' PRffr Joyce Vfou.ftcE 6«RBMW SrtftRR. I erte LftO VWie NNuseN This is the second WMC admission for these well- rested, happy but wary, older and wiser women who characterize this period of life as being of such long duration ! The onset of symptoms was acute one Monday morning at Round-Up. Symptoms consisted of sweats, chills, flushing of face, thickening of speech and complete mental confusion. Oddly enough, these symptoms cleared up by Spring Only to be replaced by anemia and blood dys- crasias — all unrecognizable on smears of periph- eral blood or bone marrow. At this point, patient becomes quite disoriented about symptoms — they change from day to day but always most distressing and most notable is consistent tiredness. The causes, more speculative than real, range from gram-negative to gram-posi- tive to filterable viruses and back again to gram- negatives. Titers rose and titers fell, as counts rose and counts fell, but relief was far from near! What abject misery! Happilv. as in previous years, there were brief periods of respite from complaints, due to the soothing balm of DOCTOR applied to fevered brow (the name tag said so!). As in the past year symptoms were aggravated by poor nutrition, noted to be harmful by public health and certainly not relieved by statistical analysis! Unfortunately for our patients, things were to be- come worse before they got better — though relief was now in view. One week of endeavor was fol- lowed by ten days of tension, which achieved lysis by crisis at National Boards! t« tnuFFft j ZE«ft Lft(Yi Kv «Z9 J WftRY HOHOiKy Chrca. Onset of symptoms is acute and almost immediate. Within forty- eight hours, patient is acutely anxious, feeling overworked and tired — all associated with complete loss of memory. Even — especially — something so elementary as Anatomy has left the realm of recall! Patient complains now of dilated leg veins and bilateral swelling, pain, heat and edema. There are frequent epi- sodes of paresthesias in hands and arms precipitated by carrying Harrison and swinging on retractors. For the first time patient complains of not being able to sleep at night because of clanking chrome, the hot, top bunk, ladies in labor and primadonnas. Patient had a brief episode of being absorbed in growth and develop- ment, in Similac and dextri-maltose and drugs in mg Kg. At this time she successfully overcame her heretofore unrecognized pedophobia. Patient experienced an acute exacerbation of her paranoia everytime she heard the words first four hundred pages and pathophysiology . Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea which periodically griped the patient q. six to twelve weeks, were relieved only by a change of service. INDIA... TANGANYIKA... IRAN... GUATEMALA... At hospitals and medical outposts a long way from the classroom, medical students learn to cope with unfamiliar diseases; help to provide much-needed medical services to people in underdeveloped areas of the world; and contribute to international under- standing and good will. This unusual opportunity to work and study in for- eign countries is offered to students through the Foreign Fellowships Program of Smith Kline French Laboratories. Administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges, the program has enabled 123 students to work in 40 different countries during the past four years. Junior and senior medical stu- dents are eligible to apply for Fellowships, which provide for an average of 12 weeks ' work abroad to be completed before internship. Students who are interested in Fellowships should apply through the deans of their schools.
