Dedication Hartwig Kuhlenbcck, Ph.D., M.D. ISJ E DEDICATE this book to Hartwig Kuhlenbeck, Ph.D., M.D., Professor of Anatomy, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to research and medical education. We are grateful for the many hours of laborat ory and lecture that Doctor Kuhlen- beck has given to us. We realize how very fortunate we have been to begin our medical education under the direction of a man so worthy of our deep respect and gratitude. This eminent teacher, linguist, and scientist has had a varied background. After graduating from the University of Jena, Germany, he was lecturer in Neurology and Anatomy, Imperial University of Tokyo, Japan, 1924-27; Assistant and Privatdozent, Department of Anatomy, Medical Faculty, University of Breslau, Germany, 1927-33; Visiting Fellow in Anatomy, University of Pennsylvania, 1934-35; and Professor of Anatomy, Woman ' s Medical College of Pennsylvania, from 1935 to the present time. During World War II he took a leave of absence from his many duties to serve with the United States Armed Forces. During this time he investigated and reported data on the medical and sanitary .ronditions existing in the Far East, and continued his own researches at the Army Institute of Pathology. Doctor Kuhlenbeck is a member of the American Association of Anatomists, American Association of Neuropathologists, and Sigma Xi, University of Pennsylvania. Outstanding among his publications are: The Derivatives of Thalamus Dorsalis and Epithalamus in the Human Brain: Their Relation to Cortical and Other Centers; The Human Diencephalon; Teaching of Living Anatomy ; Diseases of the Brain Stem and Its Cranial Nerves (with Webb Haymaker) ; The Supraoptic Crest in the Human Brain; Brain and Consciousness; and a long list of papers in his field of greatest interest, Neuro-Anatomy. Doctor Kuhlenbeck is an outstanding example of a man whose efforts are dedicated to scientific pursuits. He is a man of great purpose and ability. He has devoted endless hours to the teaching of students and has imparted to them the benefits of his intelli- gence, experience, and ability. He is truly a scholar who ranks among the eminent personalities in the field of medicine, and it is with great pride that we dedicate the 1958 Iatrian to Doctor Hartwig Kuhlen- beck.
