Perhaps this is one of the greatest things we have learned- that each man is an individual with needs but that he depends on others to help him meet these needs. We have felt so inadequate so much of the time. It is easy to bathe a patient's body but the mind is not quite so easy to reach. We have tried though, many times in not so obvious ways- the touch of a hand, a special smile, a listening ear, and a prayer For all you have given us - in not so obvious ways- we dedicate this to you. I Corinthians 13:13 Rl N . , , 1 REMEMBER WHEN August 27, 1968, twenty-seven strangers, coming together for the first time, be- gan a three year journey to maturity. As we look at our Freshman pictures, we can see the changed people we have become. Our hair is five inches longer, we've gained a little weight, but more than that, our expressions have changed. l.ittle- Girl inno- cence has been replaced by expressions of discovery and knowledge- not just the medical knowledge we've picked up in these three years but a better understanding of what it means to be alive. Textbooks told us that man is made of bones, blood vessels and fatty tissue, but experience has told us that he is made of love and pain, joy and sorrow. As Freshmen, we felt our immaturity. We were thrust into a setting we knew little or nothing about- taking BP's, our first injection, our first complete. We were still under the impression that the doctor is always right, and looked at the seniors with awe. How could they have learned so much in three years? Will the Freshmen look up to me when l'm a senior? For many of us, this was our first time away from home. We had some feelings of insecurity but we also had a taste of independence. We had to learn to live with twenty-six other girls who think and act twenty-six different ways. We began playing mother to each other. Thursday night became an outlet for pent-up emotions. Judging by the noise we made, a lot of feelings were released. With junior year came many new experiences. The beauty of the birth of a child cannot be expressed in words, only in smiles and tears. How difficult it must be for a mother who's baby is in the high risk nursery not being able to feed and hold her child, not understanding what all those tubes and machines are for. And the proud fathers, pressing their noses against the nursery windows- That's MY baby ! S4 Little kids seem to hurt more than grown-ups--or is it the nurse who huns more, seeing a sick, un- happy child? lt's distressing to care for a two year old who is so weak he has become lethargic and will not respond. But the warmth of a ehild's hug when he is frightened and alone can outweigh the pain. Desolation, despair, fear, anguish. Who can measure the agony of a soul that has become detached from the mind? What words can describe the feeling we experienced when we reached the detached mind ? We explored the fascinating depths of the mind, but could only touch the surface of its mystery. Then came senior year, and along with it the discovery that doctors can be wrong. The freshmen look up to us now, but somehow we don't feel as confident as we thought the seniors were when we were freshmen. Ambivalence is a key word this past year. I-low many times have we thought of quitting and getting away from it all, but someone reminded us of the short time we had left, so we stayed? Probably the most important word, though, is friend . All of us have become very close to a spe- cial friend. . .unlike any other we'll ever have. Long after we've forgotten the silly quarrels and mis- understandings we'll remember talking about life, death, religion, and discovering t.hat the fears and worries we thought were ours alone are shared by many, even though they may not show. We learned that to love someone we must reveal ourselves to them and they will do the same. Graduation is drawing closer. Once again we are ambivalent. This is the ultimate goal of our three years here and we've been long awaiting this day. But after the ceremonies and the congratulations will come the farewells. Farewell to the faculty, farewell to the hospital, but hardest of all, farewell to our friends. What will we do when we HAVE to talk to someone but nobody's there? Can anybody else understand us and give us the comfort we need? ln the words of one of our classmates, Being alone is a hard thing, especially if it has not always been that way. Can we make it alone, without the encour- agement of one who has felt the same way? We've been traveling together for three years now. On May 28, 1971, twenty-four friends will come together again, many for the last time, to complete our journey. E.R. 85 , W., 1., ,, , 1 '1 . , 04 I U EM? - I , J.
