The smile offered when we were down and out. The hints for an easier way given to the fledglings. The simple acts of kindness and their besto wers without whom we might never have completed this important leg of our lUfe's journey. It is to these little People that we, the Class of I 969, dedicate our Cap and Candle. 3 J,,.-1- -.f ,Q . -1 , wav .4 .:r:4g::v:7 A-4-11,1 1, V .Y :T , 515 arg,-.,...1 ...S-.f -. V, 1 ..-W.. The hours of classes go by until the first big mile- stone of capping. This event is eagerly anticipated and long remembered. Also at this time comes the beginning of the clinical practice--that sometimes frightening, sometimes humorous but always remern bered experience. Thus the days slip by and the memories, both bad and good, blend together with the learning and you are on the road to becoming nurses. We leave you with best wishes for all the future years. Some of the memories we'd like to erase and others we laugh about over and over again. We've lived, laughed, and learned together but what did we enjoy the most- counting the remaining days together. Putting everything to- gether, our mistakes and joys, we come up with a class of 28 individuals, a good strong class, the Class of 1969. It behooves me, however, nevertheless, to commence, by in large at the beginning. August l966 we stepped through the doors of APH and moved in- most of us arrived in station wagons and we'll leave in moving vans. Initiation made its impression with the cry of Produce Creeden. Where were you hiding jean? We all passed through this harassment- Zelda, midnight exercises, de- merits, brick stretchers, colorful '? costumes and an ice cold shower to cool our minds. But we never did get the Wharton's Jelly. Student Health was a place to visit for a throat culture or tuberculin testg but, mention a pelvic and you couldn't find a student nurse for miles around. I think we'll always remember sitting for hours at a time on those benches, wish- ing we could climb into one of those beds behind the curtains. And, by the way, we're still healing from our BCG's. 77 Much of our time was spent in the classroom. This is Where some of us caught up on our sleep or Wrote all those letters We owed to friends. But Pallie decided to catch up on her sleep inbed one morning until Miss Michelmore ap- peared in her room. We all learned a lot from a lecture on the ear by one of the lab assistants. A taperecorder or a private secretary would have come in handy in Mrs. Gleaves' classes. But why did Cunfer have to sample the Metamucil? In anatomy lab, half of us cried when we had to dissect rabbits and guinea pigs and the other half got sick. There's not much to say about microbiology laboratory except, who was supposed to do the river water? Mrs. Chase's reservoirs never did get fixed and we are now awaiting her replacement. The best class of all was judo. You have made this move and I will make this move to defeat you. We learned to give injections by practicing on one another. Mrs. Gleaves, Mrs. Brooten, and Miss Wentz helped with the torture. After a lot of controversy, we decided upon The Impossible Dream for our class song. We are now beginning to understand the meaning of the Words. We were capped and began to feel like nurses. But class meetings will never be ap- preciated. Decisions, decisions- potato chips or potato salad? Then there were the days We smelled like hoagies after a day of making them. Oh, would anyone like to buy a laundry bag? 78 But remember the cry, You're learning through clinical experience. .lo learned that the linen was not to be thrown out the window. Donna found out it was easier to give an injection with a needle on the end ol' the syringe. joan had to dodge the five -year-olds in Pedi. or be mowed down. And, Hughes, what did you find in your pocket one day in the nursery? Joyce liked to hide in the bathtub on 3rd floor. We all remember the little friends on 4th floor for which they had to spray quite often. The only way to return from Magee was with the Fairmont Park Guards in a paddy-wagon. We were all so anxious to move into the new wing that we helped clean it in preparation. And how many student nurses in the country know how to do the Hukilau or a Samoan dance? The evenings in the dorm were the best. Some would travel from room to room in the laundry cart while others flooded their friend's room with HZO. Jo, Hughes, and Sue Ellen found it fun to break their fingers and toes. Joanne and jean were famous for their tuna fish parties at midnight. What would we have done without Atkinson's super-ball? Some of the more daring climbed the wood- pile behind the dorm or crawled out their windows to walk on the ledge. One lonely weekend the guard got showered with coffee. You had WHAT on your pa- jamas, jo-Cars? Hughes was, alias, Mrs. Atrium in a threatening note. For those who got lonely, there were always the zoos to visit- goldfish, turtles, mice, gerbils, and silverfish. jane was always in either of two places- in the 79 bathroom, or on the way. Donna found it difficult to sleep on her mattress while it was in her closet. Why did we all double -up for sleeping in the Fall of '66- no bars on the windows? But we never did get the dorm air-conditioned, did we? We all know where the Metropolitan Opera gets its members- our shower. Com- pulsory fun consisted of Christmas caroling and Skit Night. Mary Beth did her ballet in the dining room. Norma, Millie, Hughes, Joyce, Barb, and Jud contributed a bathroom sink to our lounge. We all celebrated the removal of jo's braces. Many of us were shocked by what Atkinson wore into our rooms- or what she didn't wear. lf you were too tired to walk back from Buchanan's seven gals could make their own car. Mayberry welcomed her mother from Georgia with wall to wall signs of welcome. We must mention the balcony crowd, Jane, Sandy, Lynn, Marge, and Sue, who played Sugar Plum Fairies as the Nutcracker Suite blared. We prac- ticed our nursing often on Mrs. Gibson as she'd slip into shock. If anyone's looking for Mary, she's in South Philly. These have been the memories of mistakes, mischief and fun. The other thoughts are of our patients and the good feelings we obtained from giving of our selves. Because of these patients, we have come together with a common goal to strive together. The successes of the various activities and organizations within this book acknowledge om- own successes. Our accomplishments have opened vistas of opportunity toward the fulfill- ment of future goals. Thus we choose We Have Crossed the Bay, but the Ocean Lies Before Us as the theme of our yearbook. We are all part of this book and have made it everything it is. Iwish to thank you for the co-operation and assistance you have given the staff and me throughout this year. I also want to take this opportunity to extend special recognition to my staff members with special thanks to our co-editor, Barbara Atkinson. I extend a sincere 'Thank you' for all their help in compiling the Cap and Candle. As Seniors we will face commencement with mixed emotions. It will be an end to many close relationships among instructors and friends. Graduation is only the beginning. . . our tide is coming.
