AWD if AVBL E. x9 56 ,. - -. -hm Foreword T'was not so very long ago that we started out to pursue our chosen profession. We were filled with both enthusiasm and apprehension, and our supreme goal-to become a nurse. But now that the time is here we are amazed. So quickly the time has sped! We can look back recalling those steps lead- ing to our achievements. We possess pride and dig- nity in knowing that we have fulfilled our purpose. Over a hill laid the worldg And we have mounted that hill. We may now challenge the eagle in flight, For dreams are out there to fulfill. JA. .pl Mrs. Drucilla Gleavc-is , Ji, 9 62 if A g M Dedication To dedicate is to inscribe or to address as a compliment. We the class of 1968 Wish to express our sincere gratitude to Mrs. Drucilla M. Gleaves, who has possessed the quality of giving much to many. To enumerate the occasions upon which she has rendered assistance to each and everyone of us, would be a task that we would fail to accomplish. Our appreciation can best be shown by the contents of this Cap and Candle. It is our one desire to make this book not just a picture filled journal but a personified embodiment of pictures which will embed in her mind the girls who clung to the shoulder which supported us so well. Our days here are completed and as we pass through the doors of Woman's Medical, we will look ahead with the as- surance that she has given us. The greatest gift that she can donate to the class of 1968 is to continue giving much to many. In doing this, she will be remembering us by helping others like us. For her help and assistance, we say a humble, Thank you, Dru. j.S. AUXVXXWXS TA Avmw AMA Aim Cfvfaw il Q 5 5 M. 5 , Q Q wi K '-s ra I . .- I 0 , ,X sP- 'Y ,, '. The first week did not seem too promising. Upperclassmen hounded us during initiation to find out What do you know, Freshmen? -we never seemed to know. One of our illustrious classmates made it through the entire week bowing to the wrong tree! This seemed to be too much for old Zelda, who, in the words of L. S. Cunningham, crumped out the following spring. We felt very young. It seemed fairly obvious to all, especially when a patient would call for help and upon having one of us answer on cue, would send us look- ing for a nurse . However, I suppose we have been called Doctor enough to balance out the ego-devastating blows. Our junior year came none too soon. This year could be tenderly entitled: The Year of Specialties . It was characterized by many long, dreary nights with many long, weary noses embedded in many long, bleary books. We needed each other in many ways. We took turns asking the review questions, giving words of en- couragement, needing words of encouragement, and of course we all had a turn at waking Sliv up in the middle of a cram session to put her to bed. We had heard it before, but were only now feeling the full weight of the words- there is so much to learn . And we did learn, but found the books wanting. We were meeting patients of whom we could become very fond, who had every reason to live, but despite our efforts, we watched them die. We were meeting patients whose lives were so full of misery and suffering that they had chosen to take their lives, but due to our efforts, they were permitted to live to suffer another day. Life seemed to draw back its curtain just a bit to say- Your goal is to prolong life, but the ultimate end is death, you cannot win . Many hours were spent together and alone pondering the whys, asking all the questions-and the books were indeed found wanting. For the dubious privilege of working in the sacred realm of life and death, we paid the price of our immaturity. We were forced to see our inadequacies. It was expected that we not give vent to our emotions unthinkingly, so that others could find us a sturdy recep- tacle for their grief. We found ourselves very limited creatures, while the need was such that we must broaden and extend our limits. Upon reaching Senior year we found ourselves much different-mostly heavier. This was marked with many memorable events. Certainly our 102-day party will be remembered by many, while many other unnamed individuals may not remember it at all. We came thinking that our learning would be behind us after three years. We leave knowing that as long as bodies remain mortal and life plays the teacher, we shall remain the students. - B.H.
