In three years we have probably matured more than we shall at any other period in our future lives. We have further developed the great potential that is ours. We owe much to those who helped us to attain our goal. Through them we discovered a relationship be- tween the world of people and the much larger universe of which we are only a part. Ours was an experience of living and working to- gether in a close, friendly, personal situation. Out of the many casual relationships within the class came close friendships. As the months and years passed, we gradually became individuals. Out of many anonymous faces emerged many distinct identifiable personalities. As we pass through the remaining seasons of our lives, let us continue working in the finest traditions of the Woman's Medical College Hospital School of Nursing. 1' KYLE LARAMORE, R.N. It is with great pride that we, the class of 1960, dedicate to you-Miss Laramore-this volume of Cap and Candle. You-who have returned to your duties after many personal hardships-have guided us in more ways than you yourself may realize. Not only was your understanding, encouragement, and always pleasant personality helpful to us when we faced new experiences, but your undying devotion for your profession has indeed become a very special in- centive for us. And so to you may we say-to us you are a shining example of what we, one day, hope to be. MISS MILDRED SWICK Director of Nurses and Nursing Education MRS. DORIS WECKERLY MISS MOLLY WALLACK Asst. For up until this time our lives have been a big flurry of classes and studying. Finally our efforts are re- warded when we receive the cap of our school. Each one of us makes a promise within that we will wear our cap with dignity and grace so that we may be worthy of it. CLASS PROPHECY It is a warm day in the year 1970. The place: the main room of the Sheraton Hotel. The class of 1960 of the WMCH is holding its first class reunion. Ten years have passed since we waved farewell to our friends and Alma Mater. Quiet, please! Our president SHIRLEY LOGAN is beginning to speak. Shirley is now a clinical instructor and is very devoted to her work. We have just been informed that MARY KERPER will not be with us tonight because her duties of be- ing a Major General in the Air Force have taken her out of the country. BENEDICTA ROWAN has quietly entered the room and taken her seat. Her reason for being late is that she overslept. It has been said that Beni has the finest collection of diamonds in Philadelphia. She's collected twelve so far but still insists that she hates men. Sitting here studying the plant layout of the new Western Electric Company is JUDITH PLOTTS. Judy enjoys her work as Industrial Nurse very much. There is such an alarming sparkle from across the table that I can hardly see. CHARBIL NORRETT is looking as sultry as ever, decked out in a blue sequin dress. She finally has convinced us of her love of blue, for now she even totes a blue tinted hair style. Seated to my right is DOROTHY SWANK, still making good the name of Woman's Medical College by being President of the American Nurses Association. LYNNE LUNT has just arisen to speak and she's had a difficult time doing so. From her stance we're sure she realizes that one of the qualifications for nursing in Arizona is the ability to ride a horse for hours at a time. Our special guest is JEAN WELSH. She is now going to sing one of her favorite selections. Jean is a busy girl since she works in Pediatrics during the day and sings for the Metropolitan Opera Company in the evening. JOYCE PAES is complimenting Jean on her wonderful singing. Joyce is Director of Nurses in the Harris- burg State Hospital and is still as interested in psychiatry as ever. It seems that CAROLE SPATH is not enjoying herself too well tonight. She's worried about her white Cadillac convertible which she left parked in front of the hotel. Carole has recently acquired her lifetime ambition-her seventh Cadillac, one for every day of the week. IMOGENE HANSON and JULIANNE BESTWICK are giggling while discussing their maternity problems. Just for clarification these problems are not personal. They are problems of WMCH's second floor where Gene is clinical instructor and Julie is head nurse. Also still at WMCH is BARBARA NICE. She's Dr. Bassett's surgical nurse. Needless to say Barbara enjoys her work. What is the commotion in the hall? Oh-h! BECKY HOLLENBACH has just arrived, casts, crutches and all. Becky is doing territorial nursing in Maine and it seems that she had a disagreement with her skis last week. Our next quest speaker has just begun to tell us of her many travels. BARBARA SNYDER, who is Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Nursing, has been all over the world. However her favorite topic of conversation is still the beauty of Bethlehem, Pa. Whoever said that baseball and football teams don't need nurses? Whether JUNE COBURN has used her nursing experience for the team remains to be seen. But June hasn't missed one Collegeville game since she was in high school. DARLENE MEILY has dazzled everyone tonight. Since she accepted her job of modeling uniforms, she has acquired the status of being one of the world's five most fashionable women. No one has forgotten the shrill voice that we now hear. Of course, JOYCE ANTTILA. Joyce is now doing research on the possibilty of a thirty-five hour week for nurses. Good luck. I notice that HELEN PYRIH is discussing her six daughters with some of the others. If there are more people like Helen the nursing shortage should soon diminish. Across the table from me is SANDY BEINHAUER. Sandy is now a visiting nurse in Harrisburg. She still has her long golden tresses and does not have to worry about them being on her collar now. Last but not least is HELEN ERVINE, still our most faithful and devoted class member. Helen has received many honors in addition to her MRS degree. And now I'll close what seems to be just another page of my never ending minutes. Secretary of the Class of 1960 PATRICIA OFFSHACK IN RETROSPECT As it seems in most organizations, the brunt of the burden is laden on a faithful few. So it is with the year- book staff of the Class of 1960. The few members of the class who worked so dili- gently after graduation continued a hard struggle which entailed endless hours of work. Not only were long hours spent but pleasurable moments were given up by those faithful few. Their loyalty and enduring determination to produce this yearbook have sincerely come from their hearts. As each member of the Class of 1960 unfolds the pages of this book, which is a looking glass of memo- rable occasions at Woman's Medical, we hope that they will be able to say that they fully and sincerely gave whole-heartedly of time and effort and knowledge to the worthy production of a 1960 Cap and Candle.
