The Womecho-1933 11141 1Voman's Meelieal College of Pennsylvania, the tirst eollege in the world regularly organizeml for the meflieal ecluc-ation of women, was ineorporaterl Marc-h 11, 1850, as the Female Meclieal College of Pennsylvania. The name was Cllilllgtffl in 1867 to the one which it now hears. The College hegan its Hrst session Oetoher 12. 1850, with 40 stiulents and a faenlty ot' six memhers, all ot' whom were men. The plan ot' instruetion at the College has amlvaneecl along the reeognizeil lines of progress in merlieal erlueation. Although beginning' with the two-year eourse in 1850 which was usual at that time-hy 1893 all students were requirefl to take a four-year eourse. 111 1903 a small Maternity Hospital was opened on 1Vashington Avenue. The College then aeqniretl eontrol ot' a dispensary which hail heen established hy eertain of its alumnae in 1895, and in the fall ot' 1904 a temporary hospital pavilion afljoining the College was opened unrler the name of the Hospital of the 1Voman's Meclieal College of Pennsylvania. The t'orner Stone ot' a permanent hospital was laid in 1907, aml the hnilmling was eom- pleteil in 1913. A elinieal amphitheater was aflrletl during tl1e session of 1910-1911. In the fall ol' 1914 the maternity warils were transferreil to new quarters innnecliately adjoin- ing' the College while the former Maternity Hospital on 1Yashing'ton Avenue aeeommo- ilated Barton llispensary. ln 1925, eonnnemorating' the T5th Anniversary ot' the f0lll1l11IlQ' ot' the College, the t'orporation initiaterl a movement to seenre an expansion funcl for new huihlings. A site ot' approximately 10 aeres at Henry Avenue ancl Ahhottsforml Road, Falls of Sehuylkill, was pnrehasefl in 19120 and in Uetoher, 1929, the ereetion of the first hnihling in the expansion program was hegnn.
