After a famous College Hospital Stew in the main dining room we were sent to various floors where we busied ourselves scrubbing, making supplies, and keeping ourselves out of the way of those who gave us the impression that they KNEYV what they were doing. That night we were the guests of honor at a watermelon party given by the Seniors and Juniors in the yard of our Seybert Street Palace. After being duly initiated into our chosen profession, we progressed ad- mirably in every respect. ive soon answered promptly and meekly the call of our Seniors and it was not long before on October lfith at 7 A. M. we ap- peared stiff' and white in caps, bibs, and cuffs. Can we ever forget that red- letter day when we were accepted into the training school and became full- fledged Student Nurses? Tillie rolled on and at Christmas we were allowed our first over-night pass. It seemed almost too good to be true. January brought us the beginning of a long hard winter but amid Chemistry, Bacteriology, and Anatomy we lived to take our Materia ltledica examination which was the last of our classes until Fall. lVhat was that rumored about this Hospital closing until our new one at the Falls of the Schuylkill was ready to be occupied? Yes, it was true and the first two weeks of July found us packing and saying our farewells to the build- ing which had stood the test of time and had sheltered us through our probation period. On July 15th we chartered the Jolm iVanamaker for a cruise and then Au Revoir to the old College Hospital. There were tears in our eyes as we packed and left that same night to have our well deserved vacation. And what a happy two months that was but far too short! However we wel'e all anxious to enter our new Hospital and the 'l5th of September the doors were opened to Doctors, Nurses, Medical Students, Visitors and Patients. That afternoon at two o'clock five tonsillectomies were performed in the new Uperating Room Suite by the late Dr. Margaret F. Butler. Christmas found the hospital and its work well under way, and the radio and furnishings of the Nurses' home which had been given us by Mrs. Jolm llartin were greatly appreciated and enjoyed through the long dreary winter. Realizing that the greatest success could only be gained by perfect organ- ization, a meeting was called which resulted in the election of an Advisor and Class Officers. At which time we also selected our class rings. Then came graduation for the outgoing Seniors. A party was held in their honor at the Barn Inn on the Hospital Grounds and then their Commence- ment Exercises on November 27th. Good-bye, Seniors, and good luck. Now, since we had moved up to the Senior table and were allowed to step on the elevator first we took it upon ourselves to discuss our Class Annual. Committees were appointed and the great task was undertaken. Finally our iVomecho,' went to press. The three happiest years of our lives have come to an end. lVill we travel the highway of life successfully? Nrrcnlccn The Womecho--l932 A. IJeJacma announcing: XVell, well, the broadcast for today is quite interesting: especially interesting tor those whose Alina Mater is the dear old YV. C. ll. Hal llere is an article-listen. folks, it reads-Ethel Bentley, former nurse, excels Amelia Earhart-spans Atlantic Ocean in record time-wins world-wide ovation-and is receiving a hearty welcome from the newlyweds. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, who are now touring Paris, France. Mrs. Johnson, the erstwhile Kathryn liitner, better known among her t'riends as Bittie, it seems would rather have her own nursery than one in her Alma Mater. Miss Bentley will join Mr. and Mrs. Johnson on their visit to India where Miss Betty Lamb, former president ot' the YV. C. H. '32 t'lass is doing her bit among the llindus- It is rumored she acquired l1e1' enthusiasm for such work after reading the book Good Earth. And now, folks, as I glance upon the front page I find this amusing article- Miss ljorothy Cardwell retires to seclusion in an unknown spot in New Jersey-has a cozy one room attair where a parrot and a monkey calmly enjoy the melodious strains ot' My Buddy, played alternately on the piano, pipe organ and victrola, which it states, goes to make up the almost complete layout ot' the atl'air. My dear, it must be unique. It also adds that the neighboring Mrs. X., formerly Miss Billie Gardner, hangs her weekly wash to the rhythm of' the inelodious xephyrs that come her way. Mrs. X. once refused a contract with the Pahnolive Soap Co. She said she acquired her school girl complexion using good old NV. C. H. Ivory. iVhat! WVell, folks, lend an ear-Reports state that Miss llaisie Myers was last seen boarding her private yacht to spend a few days seeking oyster beds in the Pacitic Ocean. She says, You need oysters to make oyster stew, and she is attcr them. My, my-do you know that witty, merry making Jessie Findler? Well paper men say she just arrived in an Austin out in Oakland, California 2-and the country girl makes good! Yep! Night Supervisor in the t alit'ornia Babies Hospital. The more the merrier is her motto. And now for the X-Ray flashes from ove1'seas. T. M. Ruble opens her own X-Ray Department-BU T-deserts it to join The Ziegfeld Steppers' in That Graduating Feeling. It is also rumored that Ruble may give up all this to enter a Convent. but this statement is not authentic. Ah! a bit more wisdom to the wise-Headlines state that Miss Nancy Harp has been offered Boake Carter's position as Globe Trotter and News Reporter. Harpie as her friends know her has all the traits and abilities to carry on the good work as the Globe Trotter, having had her start in trotting the live corridors ot' NV. C. H. and putting before one's eyes and ears the happenings of the moment. Here's one, folks, Nurse takes course in Telcgraphy-Miss Mildred Lynn, quite a concientious maiden decided to learn more about the modern dial phones so she is enrolling at the Bell Telephone Company to take such a course. She says she is progressing and thinks it great fun. It is almost time to sign off but just a few more words- Girl t'rom big city establishes private hospital in a little unknown country place. lfllva Philson, better known as Phil intends to bravely carry on the Operating Room responsibilities. A second Florence Nightingale, folks. And now for the article that ends our daily broadcast-Miss Pauline Roberts, who helped to uphold the dignity of the Class of '32, is to take a position as llirectress of Nurses in the new Naval Hospital now under construction in the city. lintil the new hospital is completed Miss Roberts will assist in teaching ethics to the Student Nurses. The hos Jital was runninfr smoothlv, still each head nurse thought we ' PS . 1 rs Probies should go through the scrubbing age,', so we meekly moved from floor to floor, scrubbing and polishing. Our Seniors we1'e only too glad to show us how to do various small duties. lVe were then summoned to the class room and taught by Miss Phinney. How hard those corners were to make fand still arej. Very soon our worst troubles started-Anatomy, Drugs and Solutions fthose problemsj, Chemistry, etc. Some of our classmates found Anatomy too much for them and went sadly home to Mother frreatlv diminishing our class number. 1zw'. z-a ' On November 15th fwill we ever forget that night, the Seniors and Juniors crave a much belated Hallowe'en martv in our honor, which was frrcatlv D P7 . rs . enljoyed. December lst, that Red Letter day, when we were called to the office and wonders! we were no longer just probiesn but were Capped Nurses. Then we were allowed our late permits each month and ttwere we happy? Then Christmas and Home-the l'hristmas party and the tree in the Nurses' Home for those who we1'e unable to go home. May 12th was a very impressive day for us. lVe dressed in our best bibs and aprons and attended our first 'tlflorence Nightingale Memorial Service. This was a beautiful service and those of us who were just a little weary of our troubles rededicated our selves to our profession. Then merrily on to June, the vacation month. Then September, classes again and more t6l'robies. October 'lst and we were Juniors. In November-Connnenceinent with a party for the outgoing Seniors. YVith classes and our work, winter and spring soon passed and vacations are here again. ive are fast becoming Seniors and it is with heavy hearts we see our honored Seniorsn and dear friends leave. Good luck. Seniors.
