f Svtnhmt Amvriran illlvilirzll Azznriatinn The Student American Medical Association is an in- dependent association of medical students of nearly all the states and Puerto Rico. Medical students may voice their opinions through SAMA on issues concerning the medical profession and on current legislation affecting the nationls health. SAMA was one of the organizations which was instru- mental in establishing the National Intern Matching Program. Through the SAMA group insurance program, members may purchase life and malpractice insurance at low rates. The New Physician, a monthly journal, is available to all its members through their intern and resident years. Ar the Medical College of Georgia, SAMA members par- ticipate in the orientation of new students and provide tours of the medical school and Eugene Talmadge Memorial Hos- The purpose of the Medical Dames is to acquaint the wives of medical students with the profession of medicine and to prepare them to become doctors, wives. Varied activities include a Student-Faculty Christmas Dance, interviewee wives orientation, joint sponsorship with the Student American Medical Association of the school director, planned monthly programs, and publication of the newsletter, Dames Diagnosis. The proceeds from the barbecue held each February support a married-student loan fund, and other service projects: which this year were making stuffed NATIONAL VICE-PRESIDENT: LUTHER E. The local SAMA organization also sponsors the V.P. Sydenstriclcer Day, high- lighted by a lecture delivered by some outstanding clinician, and followed by a banquet. SAMA also publishes the annual school directory. The Golden Apple Award is presented annually to the resident whom the junior and senior students select as having contributed most toward education. The Student American Medical Association Auxiliary is made up of wives of faculty members and medical students. The long-awaited senior year is climaxed by official grad- uation ceremonies at which senior wives receive degrees in Medical Wifeology. Honors are conferred according to the number of married years spent in medical school.
