It has heen the ohjective of the schools, divisions, and programs of the Medical College to give you a sound introduction to your Held of study. The introduction has heen a comprehensive, rather highly structured one. Certain elements of the introduction have heen more than adequate, others harely adequate, and still others not adequate. It has heen long and at times trying or even anxiety producing. You have had considerahle re- sponsibility for your own education hut. from the day of graduation on, you will have complete responsibility for furthering and updating your education. Because the Helds of medicine are so comprehensive, your college for preparatoryj years relatively few, and change fprogress?D so swift and inevitahle, a considera- lale segment of your time must he devoted solely to Dr. Harry B. O'Rear received his A.B. degree from the University of Alabama and his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsyl- vania. He did a residency in Pediatrics at Dulce University., and remained on the staff there, prior to joining the faculty at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. O'Rear became acting President of the Medical College in 1958, and in 1960 was named President of the Medical College of Georgia, a position he has filled with distinction. furthering your education. The segment of time so allo- cated must he suhdivided. Much of the art of your particular field must yet he learned. Your general hody of lcnowledge fof medicine, nursing, etc.D must he in- creased and brought up to date continuously. Advances in any special tielcl you follow must he followed con- scientiously. Of equal importance to the traditional knowledge of your Held is an understanding of the place of medicine in societies and their cultures. Colleges devoted to to health professions rightly or wrongly devote little time to these hroader aspects of medicine. Societies and cultures change, progress, evolve, and ahfect medicine in the process. The social and cultural forces are only partly understood, if at all, hy those in the health pro- fessions. It is of greatest importance that part of your continuing education he devoted to study of our society and its culture and the changes which are inevitahle.
