Our chaperons had a hard time trying to get us to dance Later rn the year as we became better acquainted we had our fxrst dance, The Turkey Hop, which was a great success ln the spring we had the Fresh- man Frollc which was also a lot of fun As we voted both to have ayearbook and go to Washing ton, we thought of ways to raise the money we would need At the end of the year we went on a w1ld excursion to Woodside Park Dldn t we have fun? Coming back 1n our Sophomore year we were a llttle more confident Now we had Semor lunch andassembly so we were growing up The two dances of the year were the Pumpkin Prance where we crowned Allene Anspach queen, and the Spring Swing We were disappointed ln losing a contest to the ,Iumors by one point ln an assembly points ln basketball, and Bruce Bortz was our varsity letter man ln track Our Junior year was when thlngs really be gan happening We started out by selling maga zine subscr1pt1ons,w1th Don Weaver our champion salesman Our prom, King Neptune s Court , was the height of our dreams Our decorations were beautiful and Marty Caruso, our band leader, chose Sandy Allison as queen, with five attendants Not long after that we put on our first play, You Can t Take It With You Remember how excxted we were? We were praised because we had such a fine show ln spite of the short time we had to put lt on Now, in our Senior year we have lots and lots of things to do We re working hard toward our goal by selling buttons at the games and selling Christmas cards So far we've put on our Variety Show Yes, how will we ever forget that From the look of the rehearsals though we d be handing money back at the door, but to our great surprise we were setting up chaxrs for people We were extremely happy when we received hxgh compliments from M Barrall Many years from now when we look back on our high school years we ll remember Sandy, our strlklng majorette Francis never ending troubles with Mrs St John Fxtzle, our class president for all four years Carter, our very successful Granpa ln the Junior Play Bull, our destined newspaper man Thalla s classroom antics julie, who nf you didn t look out for you might step or. and many, many others Right now we have our class tnp to Wash lngton and our Senior final yet to add to our memories But most of all, yet most of all, we ll remember our graduation And when we walk down the aisle to receive our diplomas, lt with tears, It will be a group of people grate ful for everything they ve learned in school, looking forward with unspared hopes for the future, and looking back to the wonderful times we ve had at Medna Hlgh School 5 X I ' WL lil p J ll W ' EY X 5 . . . We've all worked hard, and maybe at times were discouraged with the way that everything was going, but we've really had a lot of fun and a terrific time working together. Almost all of us have had to work on the yearbook out of schoolgparticularly Ginger, and Connie, who is our Assistant Editor-in-Chief. As we look back on the highlights of our Senior year, we'll never forget working on our Mediang which, inci- dentally, we think is the best yearbook Media has produced. Betty Ann McKnight took charge of the decorations, and they turned out beautifully. The six prettiest girls at the dance were chosen by Marty Cameo and his band. They drew numbers and Sandy Allison was chosen the Queen. The others, Cecelia Lestourgeon, Joyce Comog, Kitty Kershner, Thalia Quinney, and Carolyn Nelson, were the Princesses. Everyone ag-reed that the prom wasa huge success. -I I -v-v-........ Oh you beautiful dolls? .-.. t- -, Oh Not! 'Ui Jambalaya .ww After much discussion we decided that our variety show would be a ubehind the scenes' production. Our idea was met with much enthusiasm and before long many of us were rehearsing our parts in the first per- formance we would give as seniors. The band provided a few acts. The color guard did one act. Sue, Sandy and Fsther did a twirling performance to Buttons and Bows'. The girls chorus line consisted of Peggy Spratt, Debbie Byrnes, Carol Huston, Barbara Payne, Sandy Allison, Barbara Vrooman, Alfreda Yarnall, Arlene Reynolds, ,Ioyce Comog, Ginger Crow, Vivian Plotts, Niary Hammond, and Sally Wisner. After a clever suggestion from Millie Scott, another dance was formed 'The Mop Dance . Betty McKnight, Ginger Crow, ,Ioyce Comog, Debbie Bymes, Peggy Spratt, Alfreda Yarnall, Arlene Reynolds, and l,etty Lou Young were in this dance. One of our new students proved very capable of singing hillbilly songs. The girls' singing group was able to hold its own. They were Shirley Quann, ,Iudy Ilibberd, Esther Murray, :mt This is ballet? Sounds in the nigh! I l Gaye 6 Catch a lot of flies that way. K. Schmidt and U. llandy. Although the rehearsals were hard work, we had many humorous situations such as the time the boys' chorus line first appeared in costume. llarry Thompson, Dick McFadden, Francis Springer, Larry Trueman, Bob Fitzgerald, jimmy Schmidt, Paul llazlett, Bill Landis and Frank Whitfield took part in this dance. The comic ballet included Betty Ann Nlclinight, Kay Schmidt and Thalia Quinney. Also Frank Whitfield, Spike Pettijohn, Andre Keck, Bill l,andis and jim Schmidt did 'Sound 0ff'. Only a few days left before the show and we needed to fill in. Carol Logan and Cecelia l,eStourgeon came to our aid with the 'Fire Dance , one of the highlights of the show. The performance went off very well and this was evident in our need to put up chairs to accommo- date the crowd. All of this was made possible by our qtudent Directors, Betty Ann fvlcKnight and Stewart White, also our very helpful Faculty Supervisors, Mrs. I,enthe and Nlr. The play, a comedy, chosen for us was 'You Can't Take lt With You , by George F. Kaufmann. As we had only three weeks in which to get ready, and eighteen people in the cast, we started right away. With Mr. llarootunian spurring us on, we rehearsed and rehearsed till we thought we couldn't rehearse anymore. Finally, opening night came and although a little stage frightened, we gave a wonderful performance. The play, full of eccentric people, was enjoyed by all. With all those people in the play you can imagine the fun we had working together and we'll always remember gathering the mountain of props that we needed, laughing at Stew in his underwear, trying to remember what came next in the confusion of the third act, Bob Fssaf's late'entrances, Peggy's convincing dope addict's act, Alice's Hard of work! Takes two to tango What's the matter Peg? dumb lines, Don and Joyce, the lovers, Carter's wonderful characterization of Crampa, Fitzie and Thalia, the old married couple, the tough C-men, l.arry and Betsy, the rich future in-laws, and all the others that helped to make our ,Iunior Play a bang- up success. Embarrassing moments Now what? The Big Boss in L f You Poeping Tom! :TW , 'Q 129 'ss Tense moment. Anything you soy may be hold against you. Night From the first announcement of tryouts for the play, our ex- citement began to grow. Here was one of the biggest events of our four years at Media. Tryouts were held and breaths were also held until the list of characters was posted. The three leads went to Shirley, as Mrs. Brarnson, Cecelia, as Olivia, and Fitzy, as Dan. Then began busy weeks of rehearsals. They were hectic, but the clowning around beforehand was fun for every- one, including our directors, Mr. Harootunian and Miss Seitzsinger. Then Miss Bareiss and her crew, headed by John Forwood, started working on the scenery, and we knew that time was grow- ing short. Then lines and action began to be learned feverishly. Rehearsals began to gradually get better, and after dress rehearsal, Wednesday arrived, the day of the matinee. Will we ever forget Carol, the co-ordinator of production, and Fdie and Barbara, the student directors, scurrying around getting props ready? Then with breathless anticipation we took our places and waited for the curtain to rise. Then, success! How proud everyone was! We had another rehearsal to iron out a few spots, and we were on again for our families and friends. Friday and Saturday nights no one will ever forget the perfomiances of the leads, Thalia as Dora, Peggy and Sue as Mrs. Terrence, Stew and Larry as Hubert, Connie and Judy as Nurse Libby, and Raleigh and Carter as Inspector Belsize, nor will anyone ever forget Barbara coming down with measles, Betty Ann hunting props, Joyce working hard backstage, Debbie and Peggy, the prompters, all those who worked on the business angle, and all the other wonderful people who helped make our play such a success. A fitting climax to weeks of work and play, was Peggy's terrific house party. These wonderful memories we shall always cherish. Tote-o-tote. Grand finale. Varsity Football Media's football season could be termed both successful and disappointing. At the beginning of the year, the consensus was that the Mustangs would have a hard time winning any games, but on the other hand the Medes should have won or tied all but two. The Mustangs won 3 games and dropped 6. Media opened the season with a 20-6 triumph over Lansdowne. Then the Mustangs blew a 19-6 halftime lead and lost to Radnor 20-19. As the game ended Media was on Radnor's 5 yard line. Harvey Moat galloped 85 yards for one of 1ledia's scores. Next the Mustangs dropped a 19-6 contest to powerful Swarthmore. Once again llarvey Moat led the Mustangs with a 78-yard pass play to Frank Whitfield. The Ridley Park game was the Medes' worst The Parkers drubbed Media 35 to 7, with Nledia's only score, a 52 yard run, with a fumble, by Jim Schmidt. Once again Media blew a half-time lead and bowed to Collingdale 20-12. Media got back on the winner's side by crushing Nether Providence 19-6. Jo-Jo Moat led Media with a 46 yard TD scamper. Against West Chester, Jo-Jo Moat stole the show by scoring 13 points andpassing for another as Media drubbed the Warriors 14-6. Powerful Ridley Township invaded Media, and on a sloppy, muddy field crushed the Mus: tangs 40-7. Ridley got 27 points in four minutes in the second period. Media closed out its season with its greatest game, even though they lost to Chester 12-0. For three periods Media held heavily-favored Chester to a 0-0 deadlock, only to fall in the last quarter. All in all the boys played good, hard-fought football, and they deserve credit for some great thrills. H gg?-4 9 'U 7 v'! The result was a group of nine varsity girls and seven ,I.V.'s who, during football season, practiced every morning at 8:00 AM. either in the gym or with the band. In addition to their regular job of cheering at the foot- ball games, the girls marched with the band in pre- game routines, and also up and down State Street after each win. Although practices were cut to one day a week during basketball season, the cheer- leaders did a fine job of improving the cheering of the Medes' spectators and of spurring the players on to win. Ginger Crow was the only senior on the squad. The juniors were: Libby Burnett, Joanne Workman, Pat Derry, ,lane Anne fllacNeal, Betty Cummings, Helen Clarke, Nancylendemxan, and Margie lloffman. Media opened its season with a thrilling overtime win over Berwyn, and then eked by Marple-Newtown, 44-42. llledia's only other win came between its two long losing streaks, of eight and six games. hledia's best ball of the year was played against Chester in the Kiwanis Toumament. The Mustangs went into the game a definite underdog to the Clippers, who had beaten the filedes by 84-56 score earlier in the week. However the Mustangs out- played and out-hustled the Clippers right down to the wire, only to lose out by one point, 58-57. Media's ,IV team was very successful as they won eight out of 16 games. The color guard, contained by Peggy Uingee for two years, marched in front of Sandy Allison, our striking head majorette, who lead the twirlers in their complicated routines. A new attraction this year was Dolly King, a cute, little acrobat. Not only did the band lead cheering and parading at games, but it also gave concerts in exchange assemblies. These concerts were always happily anticipated by other schools. No one will ever forget the practices in the cold weather, the games and concerts, Joyce and Cecelia and their tangling flags and eagles, all the fun on the buses, the food consumed by Fitzy, Paul, Barry and the others at the games, the sore throats from cheering, the strange escapades of the color guard and their kneesocks at Thanksgiving, Ruth Anne and her dancing, Carol, Barbara, Sue, Esther and all the others rushing into practice late, Peggy's 'right pivot, Sandy's snappy routines, Connie and Judy leading the cheering, the twirlers and their new uniforms, Peggy and Shirley with their never ending trouble with taking roll, and most of all, the band with their peppy music. i 41 4' 5 i I r J 1 W- in ,f if f X FQ 5:75 bv- :M I .H- TWIRLERS Front Row: S. Combining both singing and dancing of various types, the festival is enjoyed by many people. Miss Grace Porter is the musical director and the choreography is by ,Iohn Stellar. lloth of them working with the dancers and singers, and the guest stars, usually Tom Perkins, Carolyn Stanford, and Leslie Alyanakian, make three extremely enjoyable nights in late spring. The festival this year lost Betty Ann McKnight, soloist, Cecelia l,eStourgeon, Carol Logan, ,Ioyce Cornog, and Virginia Crow, all dancers, who graduated. The graduating singers were Kathryn Widdoes, Arlene Reynolds, Marjorie Moat, Marjorie Coeller, Shirley Quann, Barbara Payne, Betty Ann McKnight and Vera McGlotten. But there are many talented people to carry on in the best tradition the beautiful Spring Festival. CHORUS The chorus, also under the direction of Nliss Grace Porter, does a splendid job each year presenting its Christmas Concert, entertaining in assemblies and at different clubs around Media, and as part of the Spring festival. All different types of music are sung, so as to be enjoyable to everyone. The chorus is one of the outstanding activities, available to all who like music. JA-B lf- NA d ,A 51 if 5 1 S.: Ff:-QPF?
