Mrs . Barbara Tomlison Dept. Chairman, French French Spanish Foreign angua e Foreign language is a time honored favorite as an elective course in the Medford school system. The various languages taught at Mid High include Spanish, German, Russian, and French. There are 700 to 750 freshmen and sophomore students enrolled in foreign language courses this year. Students may be seen daily indulging in such activities as conversation reading, listening to special tapes and doing pattern drills . A weekly visit to the language laboratory is included in most classes to better students' understanding the language. Most students list various reasons for taking a foreign language as an elective: college entrance, a well-rounded education, to learn about other countries, for for the simple beauty of the language. Sometimes, in some of the classes, students discuss the politics, geography or history of the country where their language is being spoken. The basic difference between first and second year lan- guage is in the level of learning, including verb work, more advanced conversation, reading, and improved vocabulary. 4 The three Spanish teachers include Miss Jeanne Kammeyer, Miss Suzanne Mendoza and Mrs. Nelda Swisher. First and second year French classes are taught by Mrs. Dorothy Corbit and Mrs. Barbara Tomlinson. Mrs, Maxine Smith stands out as the only German teacher as does Mr. Kenneth Wagner who serves as Mid High's only Russian teacher. Mrs. Barbara Tomlinson is the language department chairman as well as being a French teacher. Mrs. Tomlinson has taught at Medford Senior High before, al- though she recently finished teaching at Albany for two years. She enjoys teaching and working with the students.
