Mr. Gordon Morris Mr. Vernon Arnold Mrs. Tizah Barlow Mr. Ken Bastian Mr. Dennis Dedrick Math Consultant Dept. Chairman Mr. Terry Leininger Mr. Hubert Sharp Mr. Leonard Sharp Mr. Del Swearingen Miss Donna Waddle Mathematics Throughout the year, the Mid High Math department has helped students to explore new methods of problem solving. Plane geometry, graphing and functions caused Mid High stu- dents hours of mathematical bewilderment. Four math courses offered this year were, General math, algebra, geometry, and algebra- trigonometry. The general math course offers various fundamentals of arithmetic, algebra and geometry previously taught in other courses. It also deals with probability and involves more problem solving than any other math course. The algebra course covers number sen- tences or equations, graphing and the properties of real numbers. Geometry is defined as a type of math concerned mainly with space, shape, and measurement. The course also deals with co-ordinate geometry and the process of reasoning. Algebra-trigonometry combines advanced algebra with trigonometry, There is a marked emphasis on the unit-circle approach. Unlike geometry trigonometry, algebra-trigonometry is taught without the use of triangles. In place of triangles, graphs are used to determine trigonometric values. Computers are a new idea on Mid High's mathematical horizon. If acquired, the computers would assist in routine calculations, Students would also be able to work the computers for class-room computation. From G.H. Hardy's, A Mathematician's Apology comes the following quote, The mathe- matician's patterns, like the painter's or poet's, must be beautifulg the ideas, like the colors or the words, must fit together in a harmonious way. , . There is no permanent place in the world for ugly mathematics. MI' . William White
