Rose leaves, when the rose is dead Are Heap'd for the be1oved's bed, And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone, Love itself sb .1l slumber on. Percy Bysshe Shelley Eefglcallon MISS LUCILLE NILAND We, the annual staff of 1953, dedicate this Raider year book to our world history teacher and publicity advisor, Miss Niland. She has worked constantly to give us courage and advice as well as knowledge of how to cope with the numerous problems that we will have to face in later life. She has unselfishly devoted much of her own time toward the development of our character, and has helped us to realize our responsibilities as students in high school. The spirit and enthusiasm she has for her work gives inspiration to those she teaches. Her ability to get along with her students creates a friendly atmosphere in her classroom. ln years to come we will look back and remember her association with us in 'the best years of our lives. 54-It Q, X. Del Wicker was absent when tbe picture was taken. M21 of ZQMH... These seven men have contributed over a hundred years of service to the Board of iidu-tation. Werner Pflughoeft, the present president, has served twenty-five years and three terms as the Board's President. William Schmidt has served twenty-one years as secretary to the Board and four years previous to that as a member. Emil Weix has contributed seventeen years and Del Wicker seventeen years. Dr. Martin, Ed. Ruesch, Gordon Kuse, and Harold Jentzsch are the junior mem- bers of the Board of Education. Members of the Board of Education are elected by the voters in the City of Med- ford and serve a term of three years. All the members serve their community without pay. There are few Boards of Education anywhere that can boast of members who have a greater over-all service record than the Board of Education of the City of Medford. - Jan '-- --M-..,,..v 4. ,, 'all 1 I 5 Q... The girls are a select group, previous vocal experience necessary to qualify for the group. The annual Christmas Concert was presented December 21. The theme was 'Christmas In Many Lands' and was made up of many carols characteristic of their native land. Included-in the program was Waring's arrangement of 'Twas The Night Before Christmas'. After Christmas the group put in many hard hours preparing for the Spring Fest- ival. From the vocal groups we have twenty-six soloists. Also, a girl's duet, a trio, a quartet, and a triple trio. Q The students have sponsored many candy sales, a dance, and have sold pens to help pay for the robes which were purchased four years ago. Botlom Row: M. Krueger, I. Lange, G. Boehlen, J. Egle, R. QQ,.Q The Girl's Glee Club is made up of the girls from second hour Mixed Chorus combined with twenty girls from the sixth hour Glee Club. The girls from the sixth hour are mostly beginners and for many of them, this is their first exper- ience in vocal work. However, they joined in the presentation of- the Christmas program and have also entered in the Music Festival. By combining the two groups of girls, the new members gain self-confidence and poise from the older members. Several of the new members gained solo exper- ience by entering in the Solo-Ensemble Festival which was held April fifteenth. Mrs. Retzer is director of the vocal work. U 01 'Y I fri in R, I 5 I-.
