I . 3, 1, nf, H 4 I 4 i, ..,,, MEDFORD HIGH SCHDDL PRESENTS fs-73!?'35 gf!'f ,.....x THE lQ52 RAIDER DEDICATIO MR, GLENN DEROUH4 We, The Senior Class of 1952, dedicate this Raider yearbook to our athletic coach, Mr. Derouin, in appreciation for devoting his time andefforts toward developing the character and talents of the athletes with whom he has worked. The result has been championship in both football and basketball. Coach Derouin started his career at Granton. He was also coach at Adams-Friendship and Barron. In the fall of 1943, Mr. Derouln began teaching in Medford as the head coach of foot- ball. During the war years, he also assumed the duties of basketball coach. From 1946-50, he remained as head coach of football and assistant coach of basketball. Since 1950, he has been in charge of both football and basketball. MCCARRON g.'Q.15 1, x 3 3 NE K' V i SJ SENIUR C ASS lil TURY The Senior Class enrolled in M.H.S. in 1948 with 141 members. The officers elected were Ieanne Schupp- President, Clarence Durr- Vice-President, and Ioan Kalmon- Secretary- Treasurer. Miss Niland and Mr. Evans were Freshman Class advisors. The main event of the year was the Freshman Hop with the theme Cruising Down the River . Elected as sophomore officers were Don Lekie- President, Kay Leonhardt- Vice-presi- dent, Marjorie Carlson- Secretary, and Pat Herman- Treasurer. Miss Keuthe and Mr. Tschudy acted as class advisors. The big achievement of the sophomore year was the Sophomore Frolic whose theme was Dreamer's Ho iday. In the election of the Junior Class Joanne Miller was chosen president, and ArdenSands- nes- Vice-president. Serving as secretary was Ruth Derouin and Marilyn Brunner as Treasurer Acting as Junior class advisors were Mrs. Schraufnagel and Mr. Scheurell. The Junior Class spent much of their time and artistic ability in decorating the halls for Christmas. One of the main activities was the sponsorinlge of the annual Christmas Dance in December which has as its theme 'Rudolph the Red Nosed indeer. Under the direction of Miss Pederson the class play Western Union P1ease was pre- sented. 'Moonlight and Roses' was the theme of the Prom another important event of the year. Jerome Pemsteiner and Barbara McCarron reigned as king and queen. At the opening of the senior year Arden Sandsnes was elected president. Vice-president was Don Lekie and Barbara McCarron- Secretary-Treasurer. Mrs, Gall and Mr. Hedlund were Senior Class advisors. November 9 was the date selected for the Sadie Hawkins Dance. On January 4, the Senior class sponsored a Leap Year Dance. Marlene Moore and Bern- ard Wendt reigned as queen and king. The dramatic three-act play 'Angel Sueet' was presented on January 21 under the di- rection of Miss Pederson. At Christmas time the Iuniors decorated the halls and sponsored a Christmas dance. 'Frosty the Snowman was the theme of the dance, and the gym was decorated with snowmen and Santa Clauses. The 1951-52 Senior Band of Medford High under the direction of Ralph Abrahamson had a total of 59 members. The Senior Band opened their busy season by playing for all home foot- ball games. The Senior Band was broken up into two pep bands--a Spanish Band and a woodwind band which played for special occasions. Other public appearances which the band made were: the Christmas Concert, a Sunday Matinee in Medford, a Spring Concert and the District Music Festival which was held in Medford. The band also went on a concert tour to Colby, Cornell, Gilman, and Park Falls. The Senior Band in whole or in part makes approximately 60 appearances during the course of the school year. The Band entered Class B in the District Music Festival. Chosen as officers of the band were: Jim Klinner-manager, Marlene Moore-secretary, Marlene Duesing-historian, and Don Luick-quartermaster. UNIDR B The Junior Band is composed of grade and high school students who have covered the re- quired material in beginners band classes, and have demonstrated their ability to play class D music. In this organization, future Senior Band members gain actual band experience before becoming members of the Senior Band. H The Junior Band functions as a performing concert and marching organization as well as a feeder group. Each year the Junior Band presents a concert at one of the Band Parents social meetings. It shares the annual Spring concert with the Senior Band, and enters concert and marching events in Class D in the District Music Festival. The band also enters several solo and ensemble groups. OCAL MUS C The Medford High School Mixed Chorus under the direction of Mrs. Marjorie Retzer, is made up of sixty members. It is divided into Boys and Girls Glee Club. Each Glee Club meets separately two days a week and the complete mixed chorus meets every Friday. A Christmas concert was presented December 16 by the High School choral groups and the Junior High students. The Chorus also sponsored a sock dance in October. The main event of the year is the Spring Music Festival. Every year interested members may work on vocal solos for festival competition. Some members are selected by Mrs. Retzer to work in ensembles such as trios, double and triple trios and octets, This year there are 20 girl soloists, 10 male soloists and 4 ensemble groups. To raise money each member is requested to pay a dues of 25 cents, sell hot dogs and coffee at football games and serve at banquets. At the beginning of the year, the following officers were chosen: President- Jeanne Schuppi Vice-president- Bernie Korbitzg and Secretary-Treasurer Lorraine Buehler. Miss Pederson is the club advisor. The aims of the Spanish Club are to learn more about their language and also to promote foreign language interests among the students. Each year the club elects a president, vice-president, SCCICICAIY- treasurer and publicity chairman. This year George Marks is president and Bill Isch is vice-presi- dent. Bernard Korbitz is secretary-treasurer and Betty Kovatch is publicity chairman. Mr. Voight is advisor to the group. This club has many different projects. DEB TE Fourteen students participated in debate during the school year. These students partici- pated in tournaments at Merrill, Eau Claire, and Stevens Point. Another tournament was held at Eac Claire after this article was written. The affirmative members of the first team, Keith Krug and Harold Latz won 5 and lost On the second team the affirmative members Ioanne negative members of the second team, Pat Olson and Mabel Marcon won 2 and lost 4 debates Four freshmen debaters took part ill their first tourna ment after this article was written These freshmen were Lots Berry, Bill McCarron, Arlene Rindt, and Pat Sibbald. Four sophomores also qualified for and participated in this beginners tournament. The president of G.A.A. is Joann Millerg Carol Ecklund- Vice-president, Pat Herman- Secretaryg and Marilyn Brunner- Treasurer. Miss Buschatz is their advisor. They have an intramural program which consists of volley ball, basketball, badminton, and bowling. These sports are played during the noon hour. Inthe beginning ofthe year the G.A.A. sponsored an initiation picnic for the new mem- bers. Other events during the year includes play day' which occurs in the spring of the year. They won six games, lost none and tied one, They won four and tied one in conference play. The Red Raiders opened the season by downing Ladysmith here, on September 7, by a 20 to 6 score, On September 21, they shut out Barron 19 to 0. In the first conference game at Medford, the Raiders ran over Mosinee to the tune of 32 to 12 before a Dad's Night crowd. Y On October 5, our Raiders shut out Tomahawk 18 to 0 at Tomahawk and followed this up on October 12, with a '7 to 0 victory over Phillips on the home gridiron. On October 19 the Red Raiders eked out a 14 to 13 homecoming victory over Park Falls to stretch their undefeated homecoming through 19 games. This was also the first defeat for Park Falls in 20 contests.
