Home Nursing and Home Making Offer Better Futures gc ' .sg -Q. tis? t' M 1 ff Learning the basic principles of first aid, care of the sick and iniured, and child care, the home nursing classes took a semesterto study these necessary courses. MSHS girls practiced artificial respira- tion, learned how to make an occupied bed, gave back rubs, and studied how to use medical equipment in the home. Much of the study took place through discussions, lectures, films, and pam- phlets. This required course informed the girls of prenatal and postnatal care with preg- nancies, and the girls then went on to study the infancy and childhood of the baby. Though the course lasted only one semester, the girls in home nursing found the information necessary and helpful in preparation for their futures. Understanding why certain threads, t l3'W' g seams, patterns, and material will make big differences in a wardrobe, learning why recipes should be understood be- fore being undertook, realizing why one should prepare for a life in the home? in the kitchen or at the sewing table- was part of the reason for home-making courses at MSHS. Here, within the furnished rooms of sewing machines, modeling mirrors, ovens, refrigerators, and cake mixers, the girls spent hours with individual products and the advice of their instruc- tor. The sewing classes presented a model-show for Mid High and MSHS audiences, giving others an idea of what they had learned and prepared. And cooking courses had advantages, too. Everything could be used later in the student's lite. 'lr' I 3 5 TOP OF PAGE: Val Messinger and Marilyn Smith check pamphlets in home nursing. LEFT: Jan Morris finishes the hem on a dress.
