4' , fa 4 Quail: YH I , Dr. Justin Dyrud Mr. Henry DeVoss Mr. lrving Mirick Vocal MUSIC Special Education Instrumental Music Mr. William Ruck Administrative Assistant Mr. Bill Ruck, who had previously served as combination scholarship director at MHS and as Oregon program director for the school district, was drafted into service in the school district administration staff as administrative assistant following Dr. Mayfield's departure on leave of absence. In this capacity, he has continued to serve as Oregon program director, which utilizes a large foundation grant to the school district in affecting improved instructional methods through new technologies in education. Mr. Robert Huff' has taken over the job as scholarship chair- man this year in addition to being the homeroom program director. Among his other duties he has organized the Lester D. Harris Memorial scholarship fund. Not only does Mr. lrv Mirick direct the high school band, but is also the instrumental music supervisor of the Medford School District. Mr. Lee Ragsdale is director of health, physical, and recrea- tional education activities for the Medford schools. He is credited with much of the success of Medfordis physical education and sports activities. Directing the food angle of the public schools is Mrs. Virginia Wait. She supervises all Medford school cafeteria menus and- trains cafeteria employees. Along with these duties she also makes up the master menus for school lunches and is the main reason behind success of MHSis a la carte and plate lunch program. Su pervisors raw Perfction in Various Fieldr Dr. Justin Dyrud heads all the vocal music departments in district 549C and maintains harmony throughout each of the various schools involved. Directing special education and testing for all Medford schools is Mr. Henry DeVoss. ln addition to this his depart- ment provides for home teachers and also for educational benefits to the physically and academically handicapped. Mr. Lindsay Vinsel directs the adult education in Med- ford and this year has added through his program educa- tional opportunities for high school dropouts. Miss Kirtley Offers Assistance Miss Kirtley, Vice Principal, often looked on the bright side of her most tedious and distasteful duties. For instance, she brightened up cafeteria duty by com- paring it to heaven, If cafeteria duty is anything like heaven, I think I will make it.', Throughout the year she has patiently given her help and advice to the faculty and students. Solutions to the many prob- lems that occurred in the course of the year were made possible through her knowledge and experience. Miss Kirtley was indispensable during the year performing duties that were es- sential to the smooth running of the school. She handled student records and IBM, took care of girls discipline, honor roll, gradua- tion requirements, and directed counseling and the signing of transcripts. She also con- tributed her advice- and service to school dances, daily announcements, and follow up studies. Mr. McDonald Serves as Acting Princibvzl Mr. Alex McDonald, former Dean of Boys, became acting principal after the death of Mr. Harris in February. Facing this diflicult task, Mr. McDonald combined responsibility with authority to handle the remaining duties that con- fronted Medford High School. Some of these duties included: the supervision of classroom teaching and the supervision of classroom equipment, student discipline, and the supervision of cafeteria duty and of custodians. Being in direct contact with the super- intendent, Mr. McDonald directed policies that related to school finance and public relation. Mr. McDonald has always led an active life. He has played four years of profes- sional baseball, served as a deck ofiicer on a naval transport during World War ll.

This year, Mrs. Elsie Butler retired after a 25-year teaching career at Med- ford High School. Beginning her term at Medford in 1911-O, she taught mathe- matics and took the responsibility of Mathematics Department Head. She maintained this position for the entire 25 year periodf Among the math sub- jects taught by Mrs. Butler during her career were basic algebra, geometry, algebra HI, trigonometry, and college algebra. In 1945, Mrs. Butler became the Boys, League Advisor and in follow- ing years was either senior, junior, or sophomore girls, counselor. Other ad- visory positions during the years in- cluded Tri-Hi Y advisor and scholar- ship chairman. She was scholarship chairman until 1961. Mrs. Butler has achieved a key posi- tion of admiration at Medford High and will long be remembered and ap- preciated for her kindness and teaching abilities. l' ii
