ln Regulating School District MR. ELLIOT BECKEN, Assistant Superintendent of Schools. As Assistant Superintendent, J. Russell Acheson heads the non-instructional program. He has the responsibility for selection, training and supervision of non-certified staff members. Under this category are cafeteria, transportation maintenance, custodial, and secretarial person- nel. He also has charge of school buildings and grounds and arranges for their care and main- tenance. By attending to all these responsibilities with enthusiasm and a smile, Mr. Acheson represents an integral part of the total staff organization. Heading the instructional program of the school district is the Assistant Superinten- dent, Elliott Becken. One of his many duties is selection of certified personnel for the Medford school district. Certified personnel include all professionally certificated per- sonnel in employ of the district. Mr. Becken is responsible to the superintendent and school board for the curricular program in all schools. This area includes all school courses, programs of study, and instruct- ional materials. Mr. Becken also has charge of all school district publications. This includes the plan- ning, implementing, and editing of all school system bulletins, courses of study, work- books, handbooks, and other printed matter. MR. Schoolboard Seeks to Raise Superior MR. KEITH HOCKERSMITH Mr. Otto Ewaldsen, a ten year member of the school board, is presently its capable chairman. He is past- president of the Chamber of Commerce and is prominent in community affairs. Mr. Ewaldsen is co-owner and manager of Swems. MR. WILLIAM BARKER Mr. Keith Hockersmith, vice-chairman of the board, has served actively and effectively in school affairs. ln the past he served on the former Oak Grove school dis- trict board. At present he is chairman of the Jackson County Reorganization Committee, which has received statewide recognition for its improvement of school dis- trict boundaries and organization. Mr. Hockersmith is associated with the Grange Co-op. MR. OTTO EWALDSEN Mr. William Barker is a civic worker and still finds time to pursue his hobby as an artist. He has been chair- man ofthe school board in past years. Mr. Barker owns and operates Barker's men's store.
