nited States, Soviet educational aspirations Ivan the Terrible provided Dr, Maytield's backdrop labovel. His hat, a shoplra, is a type Khrushchev made popular. How does a student have time to eat in three minutes? lbelowl Medtord High schedule puzzles Soviet English teacher. Russian students have twenty minutes between classes. Dr. Mayfield did not become converted to caviar three times a day but he did return trom his Russian tour sporting a iaunty tur hat. In October, he was privileged to ioin a group ot other American educators tor a tour ot Soviet schools. He returned with a strong beliet in the triendliness and good will ot the Russian people and a strong dis- trust ot their leaders. Dr, Maytield absorbed a great deal ot intormation ,regarding the country's indus- tries, politics, religion, morals, eating habits, and dress, as well as school curricula. Ot interest to Medtord High students was his report on the Soviet secondary school program. Russian students do not participate in student government or activities such as publications, student council, athletics, or the school social lite that our young people do. However, Pio- neer Clubs, tinanced by the state, are open most ot the day and into the evening tor anyone who cares to participate. This pro- gram includes summer camps which provide recreation, physical checlc-up and treat- ment, and agricultural experiments. Chemistry Club activities
