This is one subject that everyone takes. In the minds of some it is chiefly a tussle with predicates. declensions. and adyerbial clauses. To others it is hours spent in creating the theme or writing a term paper. But to others still, it is a visit into the land of adventure stories. the place in which people come to life from the pages of the lit hook. No matter what your impression is of the hours spent in English classes. their influence will remain with you all your life. The ability to criticize well and appreciate the finest in life is no small reward for hours of work. Now, you may be-grudge the time spent in learning the poem on page 263. but when you happen upon this old acquaintance in 1963. you may he glad you learned it. JE.-KN Il.fXIiI.OW MRS. True. they were beaten more than once in the competition yell, but a little thing like losing did not hother them: in fact they seemed to come hack with even more spirit. Their pep acted as a challenge to the other classes, keeping them on their toes for all the games and helping Medford to win her victories. SOPHUIW DHES 'gif' -ff A 1 Hifflw H5 W . A DOLLAR, A TEN O'CLOCK SCHOLAR . . . lr SOPHOMORES FORETELL DOOM OF BEND Here lies Bend. It was an appropriate motto for their unique entry in the Noise Parade. The sophomore float committee. composed of the class officers and Ella A. Stout. their prize-winning idea from watching their own schoolmates coming out of the build- after the last class of the day. In planning their float they had fewer difficulties than would expect, although. without a chairman, they ran into a few arguments. On the of the parade all the difficulties had been resolved. and participants were just waiting got ing one day for the hearse, when they received a call from the local undertaking establishment saying that the conveyance would not be available for the parade because of more pressing business. After much tearing of hair and running around. the sophomores finally managed to acquire the necessary vehicle. They hurriedly decorated it, and the cortege set off in the parade with the confidence of old troopers. The many trepidations which had beset them were set at rest that evening when it was announced that their float had won second prize for originality. Great joy and hilarity had characterized the day. GROWS THE WORK BEGINS Rum-m-m-m-m-m-m-b-b-b-b-l-l-l-l-l ! Is it an earthquake? Wrong again. It was just a combination of the jack-hammer and steam shovel. This noise. nerve-shattering as it was. marked the beginning of construction on Medford High's new section. As students watched. the steam shovel seemed almost human as it tapped huge blocks of cement with its steel teeth and then came back with open jaws for a monstrous bit of delectable cement, made even more edible to this creature when coated with brown earth. Then students noticed that it was not the steam shovel but another odd looking machine Cwhich reminded them of a dentist's drilll. a jack hammer that caused the vibration of the building. as the hammer drilled away the concrete steps. One student remarked, I'd hate to get caught in the revolving cement mixer. All his classmates agreed as they noted the condition of the once gravel, cement, and water as it poured from the giant coffer. A girl commented. It looks just like the first cake I made . . . Before I put it in the oven. of course. During all this time the buzz saw whined discontentedly as though it were hungering for attention. Although the noise was hard to endure as we finished last year, we expand gratefully into our new classrooms and cafeteria. ' THE NEW WING ' 'a -Mic? 141'-, , pf' - Lf, fr' . BOB NEWLAND Backfield Coach FOOTBALL Five lettermen of the 1948 semifinalists. and a handful of former junior varsity and transfers turned out for foot- ball practice last September. Coach Lee Ragsdale, assisted by Fred Spiegelberg, Bob Newland. and Frank Roelandt, set to work drilling sweating players in the single wing forma- tion under a pear-ripening sun. Although sports enthusiasts and reporters predicted an ill fate for the Tornado eleven. Medford opened its season by trampling Roseburg, and went on to stop Tillimook, Redding, and Eureka in non-confer- ence tilts. In the opening conference game, however. the Black Tornado lost to Klamath, and later to Grants Pass. With these losses went all chance of district honors for Med- ford. Fired for a comeback, the Tornado stopped Bend, Ashland, and Albany, and in spite of district setbacks, placed many men on conference teams and in the honorable mention list. MEDFORD-42 ROSEBURG-0 Medford journeyed to Umpqua Valley to defeat the Roseburg Indians, September 16. The Indians, who boasted an experienced squad and a strong passing attack. had been rated slightly over the Tornado. Early in the first period Morris crashed over for six points and Faulkner and Vincent each tallied once to end the first period scoring. Two fast passes resulted in a second- quarter touchdown, but a see-saw battle characterized the third. In the fourth period Morris hit Chitwood on the aerial route for six, and went over standing up in the closing min- utes to complete the sixth touchdown. All the conversions were made by Morris. MR. FRED SPIECELBERG Line Coach l38 JACK MORRIS FRANK MORRIS ---3---, JIM GRIMM BILL THOMPSON RUSSELL FERC MEDFORD-47 TILLI MOOK-0 Medford faced an evenly rated Tillimook squad Sep- tember 23, on the Cheesmakers' home field and returned victors after a 47-0 battle. Medford beat Tillimook to the punch and tallied in every period racking up a 216-yard scrimmage to 39 for the opponents. The Tornado pushed across seven touch- downs and Morris completed five of the conversions. MEDFORD-40 REDDING-12 Black Tornado played host to the Redding eleven Sep- tember 30, and finished at the top of a 40-12 count. Doubt spread over the faces of Medford fans as Red- ding scored early in the first period. Then Bill Buckingham raced across the stripes and evened the score. The first half remained a battle with good blocking, tackling. and running on the part of both teams. The half ended 13-12 in favor of the Black Tornado. Medford hit its stride in the second half and pounded the spirit from the opposing line. Paths for the remaining four touchdowns proved easier to find. For a time the Redding crew. under the driving of their ace. ,Iohn Gilmore. threatened to make a comeback. They were forced to kick. but when Buckingham returned the punt the full way, Redding lost fight. Although the score was not close. the Redding ball club gave Medford its first opposi- tion. MEDFORD-20 EUREKAWO The Eureka Loggers visited Medford and went home defeated after a hard-fought game October 7. For three quar- ters both teams fought in a 0-0 deadlock. and it was chiefly luck that enabled the Tornado to keep Eureka pinned d0Wr1. Klamath Falls on the Pel's home turf. and fell before their mighty power and strategy. Injuries hampered the Black Tornado. but they held a superior club to a I5-point margin of victory. Klamath had played only single wing offensive and their strategy deceived an alert Medford eleven. Klamath pushed over three touch- downs early in the game and led 21-6 at the final gun. The Tornado. unable to get up power on plays that failed. tried a Series of passes. and snared a scant six points. NIEDI-'ORD--6 GRANTS PASS-7 Before the Medford-flrants Pass tilt. Nledford was rated the underdog by I3-20 points. Full of fire and fight the Tor- nado traveled to Grants Pass and scored first but lost the game 7-6 and was thus eliminated from district honors. Smashing. blocking. and tackling drew cheers from one of Southern Oregon's largest crowds of spectators as both teams battled back and forth with little gain. In the first quarter Medford was within the Grants Pass 10-yard line but failed to score. Again. in the second quarter Medford rallied inside the IO-stripe but at the half no score had been tallied for either side. The Cavemen handled the ball during most of the first half and outclassed Tornado on yardage. JOHN DEZELL GERALD HARRIS TED BIRDSEYE X' LEO PARKER 7 ff' ' , ,gif or . Gene Holiday passed to Ken Brown who loped across the Medford stripes with little difficulty to score for Bend. The conversion was good. Bill Buckingham set up a touchdown drive which was climaxed by a pass from Morris to Buckingham who raced along the sidelines to score. The final touchdown came when Morris intercepted a Bend pass and returned it to the 8-yard line before being nailed to the ground. Buckingham packed the leather on the next play to cinch the game for good. On the following kick-off Bend rallied and drove to the 34 when Al Morris passed to Brown who snagged the pigskin and stumbled over the stripes to score. FRED SPIECLEBERC fnstructor BOXING Boxing on a large scale first began at Medford with the arrival of Fred Spiegleberg. former football end. boxer. and boxing coach at Washington State. Spiegelberg who found Medford boys interested in the sport. started a single elimination boxing tourney with eleven weight divisions. Nearly 100 boys competed and the finals were run-off before approximately 300 eager boxing fans. This year. Spiegelberg arranged interscholastic bouts two of which were with Grants Pass. That school brought seven boxers to Medford and six went back defeated. No serious mishaps prevailed during the year except a broken jaw to Bill Neely in an exhibition bout with one of his own team. Steve Crippen. Leo Parker found no matches as no boxer was heavy enough to compete. Most of the boys gained from the seasons experience and found boxing not brutal punishment. but an enjoyable pastime involving more wits than strength. Which three presidents were elected hy the House of Representatives. and why? How many votes were cast for president in the state of South Carolina in 1940? These are only three of the hundreds of questions which Medford High's speech squad had to answer hefore they could dehate with other schools on this year's national high school question. llesolxed: That the President of the Lnited States Should lle lflected hy Direct Yote of the People. In a speech conference at Southern Oregon College on january 21 Richard Dickenson took top honors in oratory. and Lee Stotllcrs was second in impromptu. while Doris Powell reached the finals in oratory. and tlloria Rohinette in exteinpore. No dehate teams qualified. Three weeks later a greatly iniproxed group journeyed to Linfield College. Nlchlinxille. where eleien of the ninteen entrants were finalists. Placing first were Richard Dickenson. sarsity oratory cup: llarhara Burns. xarsity radio speaking: Beverly llampson. junior xarsity extempore: and Dale Ward. junior varsity humorous declaniation, Other students reaching the finals were Lyle Starkey and Nlarlys Franklin. xarsity de-hate: Gloria Robin- ette. varsitx humorous declamation: l.eslie Sturnpf. junior iarsitv humorous declaniation: and ,lean .lt'l4lllt'sN. from iunior high. junior xarsity oratory. The speech group. under the leadership of Nlr. De Vere Taylor. has shown great irnprovement in a relatixely short time. SPEECH A tournament always brings back memories of your first plunge into public speaking. the most painful event of your life, You were a sophomore. and no one will eyer forget the impression you created as you fell through the door and that first day. Nor will they forget how your shoe flew off. and fell into the wa-tebasket. But the speech instructor. Deyere Taylor. graye you an for effort. He thought you were attempting an entrance. The next day. you were asked to make an impromptu speech on either of the following subjects: wily I like Public Speaking . or Why I Really Like Public Speaking, You hadnit a word to say when your name was called. yet you arose from the seat. and groped your way to the front. A ten-minute speech was required. Surely. you could think of something to say. , You did. Your horrible first speech will haunt you forever. This is the way' it started: Friends---I mean enemies-no, friends-I would like to speak to you today on one of two subjects: either. Why I Like Public Speaking . or Why I Really l.ike Public Speaking. More of this and then. ML Taylor. I want to tell you the plain. unyarnished truth. I can't speak because Mary is looking at me. So Mr. Taylor told Mary to turn her hack to you-and you found it much harder to speak to a shaking back than to a silent face. Four years pass and you are at your first tournament. You enter the finals in debate and oratory and you make good records. You are able to speak to peoples fronts. as well as their backs. You haye gone a long way-and you owe it all to public speaking. These programs. presented under the direction of Mr, DeYere Taylor over KMED at -1:45 p. m.. alternate with junior high programs every other Thursday. and over KYJC at 4:30 p.m. every Friday. Not only the forensic group. but various departments and clubs have a chance to produce the programs. The publications students, F.'H..-X.. the band and vocal Illllwll' depart- ments. as well as many others. have already shown their skill in the field of radio. Groups from the junior high under the supervision of Mr. Don Darneille. and several grade school classes have also participated. Radio work has proved invaluable in teaching students to speak before the microphone without fear. to gain the ability of self-expression, and to develop poise and confidence. It also provides a means for showing the public some of the practical knowledge which its sons and daughters are acquiring. Row one: George Goodman. Pat Crow, Beverly Hampson. ,lames Collins.
