Any boy entering Medford WM SHANGLE' P 'id High becomes a member of this League and shares in its responsibilities. The officers for the T946-1947 year have been president, Verne Shangle, vice presi- dent, Lloyd Carr, secretary, Nick Greene, and treasurer, Bill Singler. Also a new officer, sergeant-at-arms, was created this year. Tom J Mottern was the incumbent. These officers under the guidance of advisers E. M. Kirtley and W. J. Bowerman, have led the boys in a very successful year. The Boy's League sponsored an original dance early in the year. It was called a Sock Hop and couples doffed their shoes to dance in their stocking LLOYD CAR R, Vito-Presideni feet. Tom Childers was in charge of the decorations of this dance which was held a day after the Eureka football game. The boys also entered a float in the annual Noise Par- ade. A large number of them have gone out for sports, and Medford showed up well in footall, basketball, track and base- ball. Members can be commended, too, for their behavior at A , A out-of-town games and for their sportsmanlike conduct toward their opponents. The Boys League has, like other of the school I organizations, shown fine spirit. NICK GREENE S IILL SINGLEI, Yrosuur Ml. E. M. That statement by Mrs. Cox and Mr. Mentzer shows why the class is proud to have them as advisers. The junior class has taken an outstanding place in school activities this year, and is doing all it can to be a class of which Medford High School can be proud. This year the officers have been president, Joe Chez, vice-president, Bob Gaines, secretary, Mary Adams, treasurer, Joan Brummond, and representative, David Johnson. The class of '48 was represented in the membership of all school or- ganizations. Juniors were also represented in Athletics. Bob De Armond, George Jennings, Lloyd Timmons, Bob Shangle, Ronald Nutting, Tom Mottern, Joe Fliegle, Al Gleason, Bob Gaines, Joe Chez, Jim Baskins and Dick Malcombs were on the great Tornado football team. Joe Chez, Tom Mottern, Bill Arnold, Bob Fasel and Gordon Marx tossed them in for the Medford basketball varsity. Nine iunior boys went out for baseball and fourteen for track. The class repeatedly has had a larger number of students on the Honor Roll than any other class. This year it had as its project the sale of football programs. The group was also prize winner for publicity in the annual noise parade. Marilyn Winetrout was chairman of the float committee. ln the spring the class sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom which is al- ways the big social event of the year. Right MRS. The paper, produced by the iournalism class, is edited by Joan Brummond, who is assisted by Doris Bostwick. Jim Freeland is the business manager, Toma- lena Cook, copy editor, and Ernest Sutton, exchange editor. Ward Bebb, sports editor, is assisted by Sam Anderson and sports reporters, Lloyd Carr, Jock Wyatt and Jim Baskins. Mary Lee Meredith is distribution manager, and Alice Stamm has charge of the Scrapbooks. Columnists, most of whom are not enrolled in the iournalism class, are Lloyd Carr, Albert Braun, Gayle Skid- more, Mary Adams, Jean DeVoe, Carol Brown and Yvonne Gault. Reporters are Betty Howard, Sam Anderson, Jeanette Marks, Joan Johnson, Alice Stamm, Claire Cordier, Jack Wyatt, Kathleen Seekatz, Nancy Potter and Dar- leen Hays. Daphine Martin is the reporter for the Medford Mail Tribune. Mrs. Settle is the adviser. During the year, the class has had several interesting projects. One of the interviews was used in the next issue of the paper. During the football season, the sports staff printed its predictions of the coming foot- ball games in a column called Crystal Gazing. Sam Anderson's predictions were the most accurate as he forecast fifteen games correctly and missed only one. At Christmas members of the class sold greetings for a page in the paper. For the Christmas edition, the class also produced an eight-page paper, the first of that size printed in several years. About eight hundred and fifty papers are printed each time and seventy- five of these are sent to other schools in exchange for their papers. This year Torch Honor has taken an active part in the school program. After the Coos Bay game, the club sponsored a very successful School Daze dance. Torch Honor entered a clever float in the annual noise parade. The float showed a pelican trying to eat a tiger shark which was too big for the pelican to swallow. An unforgetable event of November 18 was the initiation for the twenty-four new mem bers of Torch Honor when, in the evening, new members were fully initiated and refreshments were served to the entire group. lol! lorigll: low I-Nolon Jones, lllllo lulflnglon, Joan lrvrnmond, Mary Adams, Mary Vlrglnlo Well, Corrlno lo Tourollof looulch Konoposoll, Virginia long, lovorly Nowlon, lorrsollms Cook, Olonno James. low 2-Shirley Nvlchlnson, Chorlfy Williams, Glenda Fields, Ann Schull, Ann lvllor, Susan Inskoop, Margery Hrnmond, Jo-Anne Gllrnoro, Joan Mcbulleo, Phylllo Slswflor. Medford 55-Bend 7 The Tornado trampled the Lava Bears from Bend 55-7 at the Bruin field in Bend, November l. The Tigers scored almost at will and the Bend line, considered one of the best in the state, failed to hold even the Medford reserves. An outstanding feature of the game was Roger Notes place kicking. Note, who had not done any kicking previously, kicked seven out of seven points after touchdowns. Earl Stelle and Lloyd Carr, scoring three times each, accounted for most of the Medford points. Nick Greene, Fred Chez, and other linemen played a mag- nificent game. Medford 65-Ashland 21 The terrific Tornados ran all over the Grizzlies from Ashland to the tune of 65-2l, November B. The Ash- land team was in the game early in the first quarter only, after that it was a rout with Bill Singler with three touchdowns and Lloyd Carr with two, leading the way. Carr started the rout with a beautiful bit of running, carrying the ball over from the ten yard line. Moments later, Fred Chez intercepted an Ashland pass on the Grizzly 45-yard line and ran it over for a touchdown. This game was one of the highest scoring games in this part of the state since the days of Prink Callison. This victory clinched the Southern Oregon Conference crown for the Tornados. Medford 42-Rosebu rg 20 The Tornado outscored the Roseburg Indians 42-20, November T5 at Grants Pass to win the district two title. The Indians put up a great battle the first half but were onthe short end ofa l4-l 3 count. Roseburgs scat- back, Harvey, continually plagued the Medford defense, but superb defensive play by Fred Chez, Earl Stelle, Nick Green and Glenn Tingley, and fine running of Bill Singler, Lloyd Carr and Roger Note paved the way for the Tornado victory. Medford 7-Hood River 14 The Blue Dragons from Hood River ruined Medfords hopes for a state championship by downing the Block Tornado T4-7 in a semi-final clash at Hood River, November 22. Bad playing conditions hampered the Tornado running ottock and the fast Tiger backs, Bill Singler, Earl Stelle and Lloyd Carr were unable to get started. Hood River's O'Leary proved that he was one of the top prep backs in the state. Hood River scored ear- ly in the first quarter and in the third period when they won the game with another touchdown. Earl Stelle scored Medford's lone touchdown in the last period. The Tornado did not win the state crown as they had hoped but they did have a team to be proud of. They started out as a green, inexperienced squad but they came through in the tough spots to end up with one of the greatest prep grid teams of the state. At the district meet, whose first and second place winners could participate in the State meet, a group of inexperienced trackmen, under the sharp eye and tutelage of Coach Bill Bowerman, had turned in stellar perform- ances in every event. Two weeks later at state the greenness and inexperience became evident as the Black Tornado finished at sixth place. The second week in May Bill Bowerman took his Junior Varsity trackmen to the South- western Oregon track meet, Here they per- formed well and severed new records. Bow- erman decided that they could use more ex- perience and entered them in the Pacific Northwest Junior A.A.U. meet held in Port- land. Here they won the meet by a comfort- able margin. As Coach Bill Bowerman had turned out a fine track squad with a successful season, he turned his thoughts to the next year's track squad. In T947 the track situation with fifteen re- turning lettermen had a different look. The schedule was similar to that of the previous year. lt opened with an inter-class meet, then a dual meet with Klamath Falls, a triangular meet with Ashland, Grants pass and Medford, the Southern Oregon Relays, the Hayward Relays, the Klamath Invitational, a dual meet with Ashland, a District meet, the Junior Var- sity, and the Senior and Junior A.A.U. meets in Portland. Bill Bowerman was intent on trying to break two records which stood in the Hayward Re- lays, the mile record and the shuttle-hurdle relay record. To go with all this, Medford Black Tornado thinclads were bent on having an undefeated season and the State Cham- pionship in track. lah side of pogo: Hub Nill, Tom Malkin, E. Fav- ored with two weeks of fine spring weather, the ,quad rapidly rounded into shape and was pronounced ready for the opening conference game with Ashland in the first week of April, Coach McDonaId's veteran aggregation included such stalwarts as Don Waldron, Bob Watson, Freddie Stam- men, Alan Kircher, Jim Cave, Carl Reich, Bill Todd, Leroy House and Bob Gaines. Several new laces to show con- siderabl promise were Ive McKinney, Glenn Yost, James Baslrins and E. C. Brittson.
