record of 54.89 inches. For the 3rd year in a row, the annual rainfall of 30 inches was exceeded. OTASCO was combined with Green Light by Zane and Norma Osburn; Karen Funderburk opened Karen's Kuts; Mike Henry of Kremlin took over Johnson Plumbing. Heating Air Conditioning; the Department of Human Services moved to the third floor of the courthouse where an elevator was installed this year. On September 17 the Medford Government class gave a party for the 200th birthday of the U.S. Constitution. The first “Great Land Rush bicycle race from Caldwell to Enid was held on September 19; the winner finished in 2 hours. 1 minute. December 14 and 15 brought a blizzard and 2 days of school vacation. From then until the middle of January. Medford was under a blanket of white ice and snow in deep freeze weather. (January 6 and 7 brought 12 Inches of snow and 2 more days out of school.) Newman's Dept. Store closed in Oakwood Mali. The city of Enid voted a V, cent tax; included was a plan to purchase Phillips University and to lease it back to the school — In Oct. the plan was ruled illegal, but in December, the amended plan was approved l | Deaths; Actress Mary Astor. The program included a welcome by Jennie Morris; a short program by Andy Boepple, Cindy McCormick, Brian Nol- lenberger, Traci Boyd, Slade Cox, John Drennan, and Annie Beaver. Laura Wages and Scott Taylor led the reciting of the Preamble; Billy Downing, Jennie Morris, and Frankie Clinage led an original “Constitution Rap; and Mary Reneau read her prize-winning essay on the Constitution, for which she received a $200 prize just that morning at the State Capitol in a presentation by Senator Nickles. A bal- loon launch ended the celebration, and everyone was in- vited to have a piece of cake. Balloon returns were received from a front yard in Screven. Contra hearings in the summer ot 1987 made Col. Oliver (Ollie) North a folk hero. Ollie for President ”, T-shirts were sold. Sept. 10, Pope John Paul II visited the U.S. for 10 days. Thursday, Oct. 1, an earthquake in California with over 25 aftershocks killed 6 people and injured more than a 100. Oct. 1st Nancy Reagan underwent a mastectomy. AIDS infections approached epidemic levels. Throughout the nation, including Oklahoma, students who were infected with the AIDS virus enrolled in schools, sometimes bringing mass boycotts ot those schools. Oklahoma schools were required to teach about AIDS. 18 mo. old Jessica McClure ot Midland. TX, fell into an abandoned well and was rescued 2 days later. Oct. 19 — Black Monday — the Dow Jones Industrial Av. dropped a record 508 points. Within 6 hours of trading, 5 hundred billion dollars went bye-bye — that's equal to all the gold held by all the governments and their banks on earth — the greatest drop in history. Oct. 20, the stock market went up a record 102 pts. Reagan's nomination of Judge Robert Bork for the Supreme Court caused a turor; his second nominee, Douglas H. Ginsburg resigned after admitting he had used marijuana. The 3rd nominee, Anthony Kennedy was accepted. Nov. 24th — The U.S. and the Soviet Union agreed to the first superpower treaty to eliminate a kind of nuclear weapons — Short and medium range missiles. The pact was signed Dec. 9 in Washington, D.C. In December, Democrat Gary Hart announced that he was back in the Presidential race after dropping out in May because of a scandal. He dropped out again in the spring. The homeless in our nation grew to an all-time high — 1 3 ot the homeless were families with children — not all were unemployed. Nearly 200 banks shut down in 1987. In New Jersey, surrogate mother Mary Beth Whitehead lost her case to keep her baby daughter; she divorced, remarried and became a mother again.
