The space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after take-off (Jan. 28) killing 7 people including Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher in space. Prince Charles and Lady Di visited Washington D.C. Nov. 9. New Coke replaced old Coke; then old Coke was reintroduced as Coke Classic; Cherry Coke made its debut. Reebok sold 13 million prs. of shoes; Levi's 501 's were in; stirrup pants and clam diggers were in; so was paisley and Mickey Mouse clothes. Disneyland celebrated its 30th anniversay. Fake pearls, robot toys, Teddy Ruxpin, Furskins, more Cabbage Patch versions were popular at Christmas. Taking calcium to prevent osteoporosis was in. Medford held a Wheat Fetival Aug. 24 and 25. The 1 st National Bank moved into its new building. Charity concerts were given to feed the world (LIVE AID. U.S.A. FOR AFRICA, WE ARE THE WORLD '), to oppose apartheid in Africa, to finance AIDS research, and to aid farmers. Ringo Starr the first Beatle to become a grandfather. TV Stars Michael J. Fox and Don Johnson were popular. Rock Stars were Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, and Tina Turner. Movies: Rocky IV, Rambo, The Color Purple. Nightmare on Elm Street, Back to the Future. Popular Songs; Money for Nothing by Dire Straits; Born in the U.S.A. by Springsteen. TV: The Bill Cosby Show and Miami Vice. Lighten up. Sandy was the in saying. In sports: Martina Navratilova and Boris Becker won at Wimbledon. Pete Rose broke Ty Cobb s record of 4191 lifetime hits; William The Refrigerator Perry became the heaviest man in NFL history to score a TD from a set play; the KC Royals became the 1 st team to win a World Series after first losing 2 games at home to the St. Louis Cardinals; Lynette Woodward became the 1 st female Harlem Globetrotter. The Chicago Bears won the Superbowl, defeating the New England Patriots 46-10. Wayman Tisdale turned pro (NBAJ. The National Champion college football team was the Oklahoma Sooners. The Medford Lady Cardinals went to state in basketball. Medford Cardinals had a new all-weather track. Deaths: Rock Hudson, Yul Brynner, Samantha Smith, John Ringling North, E. B. White, Ruth Gordon, Orson Welles, and Karen Ann Quinlan. Disasters: Arlex Fireworks blast killed 21 people at Hallet. 13 Oklahoma banks failed in 1985. A decline in the oil business, a record Oklahoma tax hike, the farm crisis, and many bankruptcies preceded the news that Oklahoma's budget would have to be cut because of a record shortfall. TWA Flight 847 hijacked in June by Palestinians for 17 days. Killer earthquakes in Mexico and Columbia. Oct. 15 terrorists hijacked Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro and murdered Leon Klinghoffer, U.S. citizen.
