In sports: Martina Navratilova and Boris Becker won at Wimbledon. Pete Rose broke Ty Cobb s record of 4191 lifetime hits; William The Refrigerator Perry became the heaviest man in NFL history to score a TD from a set play; the KC Royals became the 1 st team to win a World Series after first losing 2 games at home to the St. Louis Cardinals; Lynette Woodward became the 1 st female Harlem Globetrotter. The Chicago Bears won the Superbowl, defeating the New England Patriots 46-10. Wayman Tisdale turned pro (NBAJ. The National Champion college football team was the Oklahoma Sooners. The Medford Lady Cardinals went to state in basketball. Medford Cardinals had a new all-weather track. Deaths: Rock Hudson, Yul Brynner, Samantha Smith, John Ringling North, E. B. White, Ruth Gordon, Orson Welles, and Karen Ann Quinlan. Disasters: Arlex Fireworks blast killed 21 people at Hallet. 13 Oklahoma banks failed in 1985. A decline in the oil business, a record Oklahoma tax hike, the farm crisis, and many bankruptcies preceded the news that Oklahoma's budget would have to be cut because of a record shortfall. TWA Flight 847 hijacked in June by Palestinians for 17 days. Killer earthquakes in Mexico and Columbia. Oct. 15 terrorists hijacked Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro and murdered Leon Klinghoffer, U.S. citizen.
