Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1974 volume:

ATHLETICS ORGANIZATIONS One of the advantages that being a student of M.H.S., is the experience a student receives in joining an organization. Being an important part of a worthwhile group, prepares an individual for life both as a citizen and a responsible adult. When remembering this year's school contributors, one must recognize the hard work, self- sacrifice, and many times second effort, the boys and girls of Medford have put forth. It's something to respect when a student will put their talents and efforts on display knowing their chances for public ridicule are high. i STUDENT LIFE The faculty and others in charge have gone out of their way to improve and make pleasant the sometimes tense atmosphere that being a student entails. 2 PEOPLE ACADEMICS Every advancing year generally means progress both for the individual, as he or she goes into the next higher grade, and because of the bettering of facilities, - equipment, and qualified instructors: Medford school system increases the opportunity for having informed and more involved citizens. The organizations, clubs, offices, classes, sports, and all other activities that take place during the year would not be unique and memorable without the people involved. Their personalities make it worth having a yearbook to recall the times of their lives. May- be it seems unimportant when you first receive your yearbook, but keep it for several years and you'll find the reason people treasure memories. From cover to cover and page to page a school year is bound in a book, but not intended to end. It is perpetual; what ends one day, one week, month or year is just a stepping stone and a beginning for something new. What one makes of it, will determine the outcome. Make an investment put more into your life and be surprised at the results. Make each day exciting. 3 (1) NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Mark Bramlett Jody Kretchmar Denise Koehn Doug Divelbiss Sue Hills Lynn McGowan Kristi Frieouf Mike Ciskowski Rodney Kroutil Bruce Reimer Lowry Morris Kathy Warren (2) DAR Jody Kretchmar (3) GIRL'S STATE Jody Kretchmar (4) BOY'S STATE Mark Bramlett (5) STATE HONOR SOCIETY Mark Bramlett Jody Kretchmar Doug Divelbiss Lynn McGowan Kristi Frieouf Mike Ciskowski Rodney Kroutil Bruce Reimer Debra Smetana Kathy Warren Randy Morris Patricia Blubaugh-Not Pictured Jackie Joslen-Not Pictured 7 LEFT PAGE DRUM MAJOR: Mark Bramlett FEATURE TWIRLER: Jody Kretchmar BANNERS: Cheryl Witt, Teresa Williamson, Mickey Reimer, Jonella Teders, Debra Smetana, Denise Koehn. ACADEMIC FREEDOM The right of a teacher to teach and a learner to study without unreasonable inter- ference or restraint is true academic freedom. This freedom ranks with freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of wor- ship as an essential charac- teristic of a democratic society. Each teacher must be at liberty to pursue a Student's Scholarly inquiry to any honest con- clusion. He must freely pre- sent to his students his find- ings and judgements about his field of specialization. Thirdly, he must be free to publish the results of his re- search and reflection so that his fellow collegees and general public may benefit by and criticize his work. Progress of knowledge is greatly slowed, when a scholar must slant his in- vestigations or twist or sup- press his conclusions. Teach- ers of the United States, Canada, and Britain and many other countries, by the mid-20th century, had won recognition of principles of academic freedom. (2) Kim Tebow and her amazing likeness. First hour high school art students have created a (plaster of paris) mold or cast of Kim. Piece by Piece the new Kim was plastered together. 83 84 The student's academic freedom includes the right for honest instruction, to form his own conclusions on the basis of his studies, the right to express and hear his opin- ions, and the right to a rea- sonable voice in the decision of what he is to study. In the 20th century, college students hold considerable liberty to choose courses and have a representative voice in col- lege affairs through student governments. After World Warn, United States Students and students in various European and Latin American countries, began to demand a larger share in making and administering university rules and in planning the curricu- lum. These student move- ments enlarged the meaning of Student Academic free- dom. When a former student makes an application or takes part in society, he is off to a good start if he has been a mem- ber of Medford High. Medford not only qualified, but usually excelled in the academic area, and has status and records to show it. This year has kept with the trend. For a small town, Medford citi- zens and students truly can be proud of their academic excellence. 85 Beck, Shane Botts, Randy Chilcoat, Gregory Clark, Mike-Not Pictured L TO R: 1ST - 5TH Angie McMillen, Lorie Kretchmar, Debbie Frazier, Gregory Chilcoat, Cara Kennedy. She came to Medford from Gore in 1968 and entered fourth grade. She was active in FHA, Pep Club, Band and 4-H, until her tragic death on October 18, 1973. Gail leaves behind sad faces of those who miss her cheerfulness. It is not our place to ask why she was taken to be with God so soon but to remember her as she was. JUST A DOG, MISTER He was just a dog, mister. And all of us called him Bub. He was short and not very tall. He hadn't a tail, just a stub. His tail froze off one cold night, you see. We just pulled the rest of him through. No, he didn't have much pedigree, perhaps, that was frozen off, too. He learned to play ball, roll over, and speak. And he learned them in no time at all. He would chase cats up trees. But cats were as safe, as safe could be. Unless they should start out to run. He would run after children and throw them down. But that was only in fun. His worst was to bark at the postman one day, But the postman, he barked at him first. He was chasing an automobile. When the wheel hit him right in the side. He gave out a queer little squeel. And stretched out and curled up and died. He was short and not very tall And all of us kids called him Bub. He was just our dog. Mister, that's all. -Gail Greggs DON S DISTRIBUTING CO.
