1967 MEDFORD CARDINAL VOLUME XIX DEDICATION MR. EUGENE V. KEITH Superintendent To one, who in four years with the Medford School System, has earned the respect and admiration of all our student body. To you, Mr. Keith, we wish to extend our highest honor; the dedication of this 1966-67 CARDINAL. 9 THE ANNUAL STAFF SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE Our student body, teaching staff, and school patrons combine to make our school operation an enjoyable and productive enter- prise. I appreciate the opportunity to serve in this community and school system. I wish to encourage each of you to take inventory of your abilities and interests and establish sound practical goals for the future. Select appropriate and meaningful experiences in school and strive for mental, physical, and emotional maturity. The future holds great opportunities for those willing to discipline themselves and labor for a worthwhile objective. I pledge to each of you that I will do my best to provide a sound educational opportunity for you in this school system. I challenge each of you to take full advantage of your opportunities for growth in wisdom, character, and morality. Sincerely, Eugene V. Keith It is a real privilege to work with the youth of our community. In them I see great potential; whether this potential is developed is due, in part, to the educational experiences they encounter while in the Medford School System. It is our earnest desire to provide the facilities, the atmosphere, and the motivation which are conducive to the full development of each student’s potential. Each of you has made decisions andhas seen the results. This is life; choices and preparations you are making now will bear their consequences. Think clearly, act wisely, and do your best. May God richly bless each of you in your efforts. Sincerely, PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE 4 Don Schuneman BOARD OF EDUCATION OFFICERS Don Melka.......................President Ed Clark...................Vice-President Jan Keller..........................Clerk MEMBERS Marvin Green Henry Kretchmar George Bocox The culminating point of administration is to know well how much power, great or small, we ought to use in all circumstances. JANE EULBERG Reporter Winter comes and sprays soft snow upon our earth; it transgresses a spirit of hope, of memory. So at Medford does winter slip in, then out again with a new spring nestled in its folds. The Senior Class of 1967 in the final act of one drama, finds that now, in its winter of discontent', it is anxious to enter into the major and dedicated role, the new season, a new act. Excitement, humor, scholastic achievement, cultural purpose have all been vital in this drama of high school. Now as learning begins to show its direction, fresh leaves are budding, and a new act begins. 12 DON ANDERSON Football 1,3,4; Track 1,2,3; Weight Lifting 1, 2,3,4; Band 1,2; Class Vice-President 4; Let- terman's Club 3,4; Letterman's Club Secretary- Treasurer 4; FFA 3,4; Football Escort 4 MARSHA DUNKLEBERGER FHA 1,2,3, 4; Pep Club 1,2,3, 4; Basketball 1, 4; Band 3 ; Twirler 3 ; Annual Staff 2 ; Glee Club 3 ; Office Secretary 2,3 Wakita TOM CAKDWEL 1 - Football 1; Junior Play 3 JANE EULBERG Pep Club 1,2,3,4; Representative 3; Girls' Bas- ketball 1,2,3,4; Junior Play 3; Senior Play 4; FTA 3,4; Spanish Club 2,3; Vice-President 3; National Honor Society 2,3,4; State Honor Society 1,2,3,4; Annual Staff 4; Student Coun- cil 1; Class Reporter 4 REED BRAMLETT Class Vice-President 1; Class President 2,3; Student Council 4; Vice-President 4; Basketball 1,2,3,4; National Honor Society 2.3,4; State Honor Society 1,2,3,4; Junior Play 3; Senior Play 4 KENNY CHAPLIN Band 1,2,3,4; Saxophone Quartet 1,2,3; Tri- State Band 3; Class Vice-President 2,3 PAM GIBSON Girls' Basketball 1,2,3,4; Girl Athlete Award 1; Football Queen Attendant 1; Class Reporter 1, 2; FTA 3,4; Librarian 4; Pep Club 1,2,3,4; Spanish Club 2,3; Annual Staff 4; Senior Play4 13 CATHY GREEN Pep Club 1,2,3,4; Cheerleader 1,3,4; Band 1, 2,3,4; Majorette 2; Glee Club 1; FHA 3,4; Rep- resentative 4; Spanish Club 2; FT A 3; Annual Staff 4; Junior Play 3; Senior Play 4; Football Queen Attendant 4; Co-ed Correspondent 4 ROBERT DELAY Band 1,2,3,4; State Honor Society 1,2; Nation- al Honor Society 2,3,4; Chorus 3; Tri-State Chorus 3; Student Council 2; Football, Basket- ball, and Track Manager 2,3; Letterman'sClub 2,3; Junior Play 3; Senior Play 4; Basketball 4 RODNEY FRIEOUF Football 1,2,3,4; Basketball 1,2,3,4; Track 1, 2,3,4; Letterman's Club 3,4; Spanish Club 2; FFA 1,2,3,4, Officer 2,3,4; Junior Play 3; Senior Play 4, Letterman's Club Vice-President; Football Escort 4 ■gMHHHHIi I MARILYN HULA Band 1,2,3,4; Basketball 1,2,3,4; Basketball Queen 3; Football Queen Attendant 2; FFA Queen Attendant 4; FHA 3,4; Vice-President 3; President 4; FTA 3,4; Pep Club 1,2,3,4; Vice- President 3, President 4; Spanish Club 2; Student Council 3; Class Officer 3: AlbAround .Girl 3 BOB HULA fj Football 1,2,3,4; Captain 4; Basketball 1,2,3; Track 1,2,3; Letterman's Club 2,3,4; FFA 3,4; Weightlifting 4 R. I have heard about you... Many people in and around Medford told me this when they first met me. But I think that many of you have not heard about my family, my school, my life in Germany, or the reason why I am spending this year in Medford with you. Therefore, I shall try to tell you a little more in this short report. First, about my family: Both of my parents came from Bavarian farms, but now our family lives in town. My fa- ther is 54 years old and works for the railroad in a distribution office. My mother is 50 years old and works only for the family. I have one married brother, who sells insurance; and a ten-year old sister who is in elementary school. We live on the Danube River in an apartment house in the suburban settlement of Regensburg, an old, large city of 129, 000 in- habitants. Because our city is so crowded, the whole family likes to spend many weekends on my uncle's farm south of our town. Since our city is surrounded by large forests, wide rivers, and small mountains, we have many opportunities to relax on walks in the woods around the town. In summer we enjoy swimming in the Danube or picnicing on its banks or in the near-by forests. In Germany, our high schools are called Gymnasiums. In fact it is high school and junior college combined; there- fore after our 4 years in elementary school we go 9 years to Gymnasium. I am in a Real-Gymnasium with 950 students and last year I had to take 15 subjects; most of these classes met only once or twice a week. I hope to enter our brand new university in three years and become an agricultural engineer or a teacher. I am very proud to have been a boy scout for ten years; I am also a Malteser , this is an organization in Germany (similar to your Red Cross) that helps injured people, usually those who are injured in car accidents. I spend many week- ends or vacations with these organizations on camping trips or in other activities. One of the reasons for my wanting to spend a school year in America was that I might help in some way to bring about a better understanding between the young people of the world-.and, help to prove that these young people can live together in peace and can learn much from one another. The American Field Service, the organization that sponsored my trip, made it possible for 3,300 students from all over the world, from all European countries, from Asia to Africa, and from Australia to South America, to spend this school year in the United States. In this year with you I hope I have revealed to you as much as I possibly could about Germany; and I know through you, I have a much broader understanding of your United States. At this time I would like to thank everyone very much for making my visit possible, and I appreciate the warm re- ception that I have received. Finally, I wish that every boy and girl in Medford and in the whole world could go to other countries to learn about them and to bring understanding throughout the world--to live together in peace. Yellow, mellow, ripened days, Sheltered in a golden coating; Sweet and smiling are the ways Beauteous, golden autumn days Will Carleton The season of gold and scarlet has crept upon the horizon; man looks forward to the days of rich and abundant harvest. As the Junior Class of 1967 gazes into memories of past springs and summers, it is realized that a four act drama will soon be another lost season. The autumn year is here, with its new- found knowledge, its bright and sportive activity, its full and re- warding blessings. With the mellow ripeness of this experience slowly fading, a cloud gathers, a light snow falls, and a new act rises. 20 Peggy Arterburn Greg Blubaugh Irvin Cink John Dahlem Terry Davis Jim Drennan Carolyn Fowler Philip Funderburk Dean Gibson Teresa Hale Jimmy Hayes Carla Hitchcock Patty Hybsha Carol Kretchmar Diana Irvin Linda Kilian Cheri Lacy Rodney Koehn Tommy Lisk Greg McCoy Sandra Koehn Keith Pitcher Jim Schuermann Judy Schuneman Eddie Stocker Gaylen Stocksen Marilyn Taber Danny Tebow Gary Thomas Janet Thomas Judy Walker Kathryn Wedman Debbie Yerian Max Yerian SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS President--Rick Bramlett; Vice-Pres.--Kathy Bocox; Secretary-Treasurer--Barbara Arterburn; Reporter--Jack Goertz O Summer Oft pitchest here thy golden tent, and Oft beneath our oaks has slept while We behold with joy, flourishing hair. The sophomore class of 1967 in the green and golden days of the drama of high school, prepares for a bountiful year with the challenge of learning, cultural advancement and relaxing diver- sion. But who will stop to think like that? They think death is an ending-- Just 14 years old and he'll laugh no more. His friends, of course, will miss him. But he's taken one step above all men. Now God--not man--befriends him. Shed not tears--you who knew him-- He's far more contented than you. The worries and troubles of this hateful world Don't concern him--with those he is through. Oh yes--he is gone now-- God's taken him away. But he's not lost in darkness-- Just now he's found the day. Preparing an an- nual is a time-consuming, brain-racking job but we all feel that the fun lies in recording the hi-lights of the year and the self-satisfaction in knowing that something worthwhile has been accomplished. Each girl has done her part well and I wish to thank” them at this time for all their cooperation. Our patient supervisors were Mr. and Mrs. Nollen- berger. None of us had previously worked on an annual so we appreciated and welcomed their untiring efforts in pointing us in the right direction. Our school is a fine place to gain ones education but also it holds a lot of enjoyment and pleasant mem- ories. I hope we have reproduced for you a portion of these so that you consider this 1967 MEDFORD CARDI- NAL one of your most treasured possessions. Two of the main functions of the Council are (1) fostering better relations between the faculty and administration through projects such as Teacher Appreciation Day and Twirp Week and (2) doing what we can to improve the atmosphere of the school and making it a better place to go to school to learn. This year's Student Council is happy to have as our main project, the sponsoring of a foreign exchange student from Germany, Gerhard Wuttke.
