Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1962 volume:

THE CARDINAL Medford School Plant Medford, Oklahoma 1961 Out music instructor has taught at Medford High for four years, a relatively short time, but he has worked diligently during that time to promote our music department. He has been faithful in his service to advance the standing of the instrumental and vocal music division of the curricula at MHS. His resourcefulness has been an important boon to its progress. While teaching us, he has exhibited the patience and understanding that is valued in the teaching profession. He has taught the importance of co-operation, responsibility, and leader- ship. Therefore, we of the Cardinal Annual Staff wish to honor him by dedicating the 1962 edi- tion of our yearbook to our music instructor, Charles R. Daily. The Annual Staff We, the members of the Cardinal Annual Staff have attempted to express a feeling of appreciation to the Medford community for the new Medford School Plant. Consequently the theme of this book is, Our New School Building . We have used interior and exterior pictures to convey our idea. The teachers and students of Medford now have a wonderful place in which to work and study. We wish to say, Thanks to a thoughtful community. Other additional rooms are Offices, Basement, Cafetorium, Dark Room, Concessions, Library, Textbooks, Janitor Supplies (2) and a Supply room for the kitchen. The outside walls are of live brick” in color. The walls of the corridors are of ceramic tile and the floors are covered with tile too. Each room has a forced air heater, complete with a thermostat and an air-condition- ing unit can be added if so desired. } .( JI ADMINISTRATION ia . This lobby is beautiful and comfortable. It is an excellent place in which to relax and visit. Here traffic is diverted into three directions. The Elementary wing is to the left of the entrance and the High School to the right, while the Administrative Offices are centrally located as shown in the picture. We Seniors are thrilled to know that we are to be the first graduates of the new school. The large mu- sic room, plus its office and four individual prac- tice rooms and other stor- age space required an ex- cavation of 30 feet by 80 feet dimensions. The mu- sic room and the north- west basement (film west basement Afilm room) serve for another purpose — tornado shelter. As one steps into the li- brary, he sees first, the cir- culation desk. Directly to the left of the entrance, and under the large win- dows which enclose the front of the room, are two shelves of reference books. The card catalogue is lo- cated in front of the four individual study carrels. Since the library must serve also as a part-time study hall, seating capacity for 49 is provided. In the future, seating capacity may be enlarged by replac- ing the old reading tables with new and modern ones. The foremost function of the library remains the same: to house and carry forward the wisdom and beauty of the past while at the same time enrich the present and look for- ward to the future. STUDENT COUNCIL One purpose of the Student Council is to develope an understanding of the problems which concern the student body and the faculty. Another purpose is to gain knowledge through actual experience by promoting worthwhile projects such as the purchase of a new F.F. A. Pickup this year. Currently on the agenda is Lettering for the schoolhouse entrance. The Council has assisted in various activi- ties such as the Dedication and the Open House program, the Grant County Meeting of Teachers and National Education Week. The Organization set up a television in the gym and made it possible for the entire school to watch John Glenn blast into orbit--and the recovery. 1ST ORBIT--Glenn soared around earth at 17,530 miles an hour, crossed Atlantic, Africa, Indian O- cean, Australia, Pacific, United States. Flew be- tween 98.9 and 162.5 miles above earth. Repor- ted no nausea or vertigo, ate from squeeze-tube containers. Noted little particles outside craft. Said, I feel fine, the view is tremendous. Time: 89 minutes. LIFT-OFF-At 9:47 a.m., February 20. Thrust of powerful-Atlas rocket created heavy pressures on astronaut Glenn-increasing his weight to 8 times normal, causing rough vibration. In 3 minutes, booster engine cut off, escape tower separated. Flight became gravity-free, very smooth.” With- in 12 minutes, freed of its rocket booster, capsule was in orbit. 2ND ORBIT—Still no ill effects from weightless condition. Minor trouble developed in automatic control of pitch and yaw of spacecraft, so Glenn took over manual control. At 5 miles a second, Glenn crossed from daylight to dark, and back, evfery 45 minutes. Sun shining through window raised cabin temperature to 105 degrees. Said, I am 'go' for the third. 3RD ORBIT-Over West African coast, headed into darkness for third time. Reported some trouble with heat-shield deployment switch; remedied that. Joked in mid-orbit, Have four hours' flight time; request flight chit, for flight pay. As Glenn appro- ached U.S. West Coast, retro-rockets fired to slow capsule for descent in Caribbean area. Astronaut still handling monual con- trols of craft. Orbit completed 4 hours, 41 minutes after launch. SPLASH DOWN-Drogue parochute and main parachute slowed capsule, landed it in sea just six miles from one recovery ship. Cap- sule picked up by ship's boom at 3:04 p.m. Glenn climbed out, was pronounced hale and hearty. We watched the FIRST AMERICAN IN ORBIT.
