He represented Grant County on Teacher Recognition Day at the Oklahoma State Fair. He and his wife were guests of the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce. The Huckins Hotel provided a complimentary room. The Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce had a special luncheon arranged for each recognized teacher, and his or her spouse, of the various counties. After the luncheon, all were honor guests at the State Fair during the afternoon. A Friendship Hour was enjoyed from 4:00 to 5:00 p. m. All of the teachers met at the 4-H Club Building Cafeteria and were guests at the Awards Dinner. During the dinner, each honor teacher was a- warded an individual trophy in recognition of the years of teaching service. The First National Bank of Oklahoma City gave each teacher and spouse a boutonniere and an orchid. The teachers were also guests of honor at the evening Grandstand Show. Previous to the Teacher Recognition Day at Oklahoma City, the faculty of the Medford School successfully planned a surprise party and dinner in honor of Mr. McCoy. Mr. Schuneman presented him a barometer as a gift from the faculty. Mr. McCoy reports that in both of these experiences everyone displayed sincere joy and hap- piness while taking part in the recognition. He says events like these cause one to feel appreciated and they give a feeling which word-' cannot describe. BUS DRIVERS Chester Stout J. B. It is therefore proper that we should commemorate the anniversary date. In this section of our yearbook, we have made an attempt to record some of the interest- ing facts in the history of the development of our school system, in the belief that the alumi and present students will enjoy the brief summary. I wish to give full credit to the people who have provided annuals, newspapers, and ver- bal information from memory, from which we obtained much factual information. Others pro- vided pictures from which negatives were made. The following people have contributed: Dr. P. W. Schwartz, Forrest Gordon, Raymond Early, Frank Jones, Elmer Fink, J. C. N. Ernest, W. J. Gardiner, and I. R. Heasty visted El Reno, Okla- homa City and Chickasha in December 1910 to get some ideas for a new school building. It was announced in March 1911 that construction would begin on the new building as soon as school would be out. The structure was to be a magnificent modern building. The original brick schoolhouse had been sold for $980. 00 and it was agreed that no materials were to be used in the new structure without special permission from the schoolboard. Superintendent George C. Wakefield had the following announcement in the Medford Star on April 27, 1911. Because of the work of the new building the high school will convene in the Congregational Church from 8:00 A. M. to 12:00. The first four grades will occupy the Opera House. Grades one to four from 8:30 A. M. to 12:00. Grades two and three from 1:00 P. M. to 4:30. Other grades will oc- cupy the Kentucky Store Building. Grades six and seven from 8:30 A. M. to 12:00. Grades five and eight from 1:00 to 4:30. Superintendent Wakefield also requested that no one be absent as they could not otherwise be promoted. Everett Mitchell and Son of Wellington had charge of the construction and by May 11th excava- ting was underway with a dozen teams of horses moving dirt. Superintendent Wakefield reported that seventy-six pupils had enrolled in high school during the past year. Twenty-one dropped out and fifty-five completed the school year. The total enrollment had been three hundred and fifty-four. Fifty-three had been neither tardy or absent. Commencement was held in the Opera House on May 18, 1911 since construction work was under- way. The Honorable Mr. Davidson delivered the Commencement Address and his subject was, The Greatest Social Problem of Today . Four Students graduated, they were Dorothy Meade, Nella Somers, Forrest Gordon, and Farrington Barriklow. They were the last to graduate from the school. The gradu- ates received sixteen full credits, having completed a four year course. The high school faculty in addition to Superintendent Wakefield consisted of Almeda King, Principal; Laura Mauk and Effie Renshaw. 1911-1912 Regular classes in the new building began late in the fall as construction was not completed in time for the opening of the fall term. Classes were held in various places throughout the city, in the meantime. The first class to graduate from the new school graduated in 1912. The graduates were Harry Garringer, Grace Davis-Lawless, Edward Harper, Sadie Kelly, Monzelle Ludlow-Sharp, Roy Moss, Lucy Runyon-Estes, Maude Staedelin-Ewing and Jean (Jack) Stewart. The Senior was the name of the first Annual and was made by the Class of 1912. The high school faculty members of 1911 also taught in 1912. The School Board members of 1912 were H. D. Reed, President; Charles N. Ernest, Clerk and J. W. Chism, Treasurer. An early day view of Medford. |3rttta of Hettford The Pride of The City (This article is taken from The Patriot” and is be- ing written for the benefit of those students who may want the information for future reference.) Medford School The building is a two story and basement re- inforced concrete structure with red brick facings, stone trimmings and tile roof; the stairways and floors are of concrete, the partitions of terra cotta and the only inflammable material in the building is the windows and doors, thus making the building as near fireproof as possible. The entire building is heated with steam and lighted with electricity and the exposed plumbing in the lavatories is of the latest and most approved models and methods. The basement of first floor contains the heat- ing plant, the gymnasium, the manual training and primary departments. The floor is nearly on a level with the street and it would more properly be term- ed the first floor except for the fact that the main steps leading to the building from the ground reach the second floor. On the main floor are the seven grade rooms Building with the usual halls, clothes closets, etc. in addi- tion to the Superintendent’s office and the ladies rest room. The second floor has the study, library and recitation rooms of the High School, the domestic science room and auditorium. The auditorium has a seating capacity, includ- ing the balcony, of between 400 and 500, the latest opera chairs being used. The stage is large and roomy and the proscenium arch in same is sufficient- ly large for any production that may be presented. The seating arrangement is such that the audience is in close proximity to the stage and from every seat an unobstructed view of the stage may be had. Special attention was given to acoustics and as a consequence the acoustic properties of the audi- torium are such that every word or sound produced on the stage is easily heard in every part of the auditorium. An auditorium and gymnasium was added in 1927. The roof of the Physical Education Plant built in 1952, is visible. The School Bell has been in use for more than sixty years. Since 1901 the total number of alumni will have totaled 1428 by 1961. 1927-1960-61 No building changes were made until 1927 when an addition was made to the north side. This consisted of a gymnasium with a playing court forty- four feet wide and sixty-six feet long, with ample ceiling height, the floor being belpw ground level. An auditor- ium complete with stage was built a - bove the gymnasium, and the original auditorium became a study hall. There came a time when the auditorium and the gymnasium of 1927 could not meet the needs of the school and the community. In 1952 a $160, 000. 00 Physical Education Plant was constructed on the west side of the schoolhouse. The Plant was complete with a full size playing court, mov- able seats, a stage, dressing rooms, and heating system. In time The Pride of Medford could no longer satisfy the demands of the, community and in June, 1960, Mitchell and Son Construction Com - pany, of Tulsa began to raze the north addition. The auditorium and gymna- sium was to be removed so construction work and school classes could proceed during the 1960-61 school year. A $320, 000. 00 ultra-modern schoolhouse was to be constructed. Classes were held regularly although the noise of machinery offered much competition, especially when the big tractors were very near the building. Everyone was determined to withstand the noise, and the trembling of the schoolhouse at times, as all could vision a new mo- dern building for the beginning of the fall term of 1961. The following pictures tell a part of the story of construction. Cardinal fep Club The boys study market trends. The Medford F. F. A. mem- bers are proud of their projects ac- complishments during the past year, with the number of livestock on the increase. We have this year as pro- jects: 95 head of swine, 24 head of beef cattle, 56 head of sheep and 54 head of poultry, this gives each FFA member an average of 8. 8 animals per member. Also we have 108 acres of wheat and 59 acres of barley. The members have an investment of $7, 602. 11 which gives an average of $296. 23 investment per student. We think this is an accomplihment on the part of each FFA member in our Chapter, we hope we can all increase our Supervised Farm Training Programs in the future. We are also proud of the fact that our Soil Conservation Booth won first place and champion at the County Soil Conservation District Fair in February. |HWforrl projects Report MEMBERS--STANDING: Mr. Hammer, Advisor; Lynn Mennem, Billy Ciskowski, David Nollenberger, Ersel Dixon, Gary Mennem, Billy Schultz, Archie Cardwell, Louis Mowbray, Charles Schmitz, Roland Hula, Edward Stout, David Lashley and Jimmy Early.
