We miss his bright and friendly, Hi! That brightened up our day; He was an inspiration too, For all who passed his way. To everyone who knew him He was a faithful friend, A loyal classmate, a jolly pal, On whom we could depend. We shared our joys and griefs with him. But now he’s gone away...... Yet to another world Where we'll meet again someday. i t CHARLES SPRAGUE PRESIDENT JOHN BRADEN VICE-PRESIDENT OPAL FUSS CLERK MARVIN WEBSTER JENE HODGES SAM RENEAU To the Class of 1957: I want to express my good wishes for your future success and happiness. One of die most valuable lessons you have learned in high school is that you must fight to keep the faith; you must keep the faith to finish the course; you must finish the course to win the crown. Many things learned in your high school days will be forgotten without very great loss, but you will suffer an irretrievable loss if you forget that you will always have to keep the faith. Keep faith in God, without which you cannot live in a real sense of security; strive happily, live nobly, achieve ultimately. Keep faith in yourself, without which you cannot hope to succeed. You will never do that which you do not believe you can do. Others may rob you of your job, your money, your home, and your friends, but you alone can de- stroy faith in yourself. Keep faith in your fellowman. Such confidence is required for cooperation in any enterprise. Society is built on mutual trust. Keep faith in your work. Believe in what you are doing and ex- pect to succeed. We congratulate you on your achievement, and remind you that achievement always makes failure more conspicuous and disappointing. You are going out into a world with beckoning hands for leaders. Class of 1957, we shall miss you, but you go with our prayers that your cherished ambitions may be realized. J. C. McCreight, Superintendent To The Students of Medford High School: Now, we face both today and tomorrow! That gives us a dual responsibility. What may seem expedient for today, when it is judged in the light of tomorrow, may be wholly inadequate. For that reason, I ask each one of you to think carefully, counsel fully and pray earnestly before you make decisions which may make a complete change in the trend of your life. The value of study, the importance of courses and the influ- ence of friends, while a student of Medford High School will be revealed in their true worth as you draw upon the strength which they have contributed to your lives or as you find yourself weak because of your failure to love, appreciate and study these riches. Make the best of your youth, you only pass this way once. It has been a pleasure working with you this year, may God richly bless you in the future. A constitution was written and adopted by the students. A general election was held by the student body which elected a president. The elec- tion was patterned after the method which is used in the county and state election and voting was by secret ballot. After the president was chosen, each class held separate class elections and elected two class representatives for council members. The eight council members then elected from them- selves a vice-president, a secretary and treasurer, and a reporter. The nine members of the council and the sponsors met in scheduled sessions during the year. We believe that a Student Council will promote goodwill among the stu- dents and faculty, and will also develop a stronger bond among the students, the teachers, and the community. The organization will provide leader- ship training and it will help us to learn how to find some solutions to civic problems, by the use of democratic methods. We are very proud to be charter members, and it is our desire to see this organization develop and grow in the future years. Don McCoy, Charter President BEHIND THE BLACK DOORS By Sharon Eulberg There’s a lot more behind the black doors of M. H. S. than this 1957 Cardinal shows, and you don't have to take my word for it. I’m going to recall to your mind some of the happenings that make school, but never seem to make it into the year- book. This incident I must relate at once. During the All-School Play in the second act Donald Webster (the family doctor) was making pretty good time with the wife (Carolyn Bauer) of the late Mr. Morlock (Larry Kretchmar). The ghost of Mr. Morlock was to have said to the doctor Vamoose, Amscray , but instead it came out Aamoose Vamscray . Now if that didn’t cause a riot, especially on the stage. The Student Council began rolling this year too. We had a big election for the student council president, with polls, bal- lots, wards and all; just like they have in the county elections. The polls were open all day and you voted at your leisure. The student council sponsored several activities, such as a Volleyball Tournament, with student teams, faculty teams and teams from down town, participating; a Christmas Tree was bought for the study hall, car tags which advertised the Oklahoma Cen- tennial were sold, etc. The organization of a National Honor Society is under way; we're trying to get it into effect this year. A constitution has been written. Tennis was made available to those students desiring it. Mr. Reitz took charge of the project and saw to it that everyone made it to the courts for an hour or two of tennis. Biology Projects were certainly a part of the School Year of '56-'57. Two especially, one with plants, the other with white mice. Janell, Liz, and Sharon set a box of dirt on the south landing of the top floor and planted radishes, beans, petunias and nastursiums. One day some of the radishes had been neatly mowed. The Physics class was given credit for the act. Carol and Judy ordered a dozen white mice and created quite a smell in the Lab. The Juniors did some of their best work on a theme entitled, I am a Modern Rip , while the Sophomores wrote $5, 000. No Strings . The Freshman Class took first place in the Homecoming Parade with their Mow'em Down float. The Seniors enjoyed, THE TALE OF TWO CITIES. Some of the Dads treated the basketball girls to a steak supper at Blackwell. The Physics class spent a day in Wichita. The Senior Class chartered a bus and went to Career Day at O. C.U. The football boys had steaks at Tonkawa after the game. The Social Science Classes visited the Oklahoma Legislature while it was in session. The Typing Two Class was responsible for the publication of the bi-monthly school paper, REDBIRD RECORD. We had several snake dances before some of the games, and some sock hops, always successful, after some of the football games. Coach always got the boys to dance. The Homecoming Day was wonderful. The parade was beautiful, the crowd was interesting, the crowning ceremony was enjoyed by everyone, and Lamont never had a chance after the kickoff-. That basketball game we had with Jefferson really gave us a thrill. It took a double overtime, but won-. We shall never forget this year, we have realized the greatest of joy and have experienced the deepest of sorrow. Mrs. Harville, our English teacher, was named Grant County Teacher of the Year. She was honored with a trophy and a day of festivities at the State Fair. She was on television too. There was the assembly when Mr. Scheneman stood before the student body and demonstrated the results of chewing gum. This was good for a laugh. There have been lots and lots of little things, some funny---some not so funny, that have been a real part of the '56-'57 school year, but they have been taken for granted and then left alone to die. Let's keep some of them alive. Now it all started when Ambrose Groves and Bert Miller, a couple of would-be vaude- ville comedians, were crossing the desert, headin' Californy way. But right out in the middle of said desert, they were booted off of the train and onto their own, 'cause someone had picked their pockets where their tickets and all their money was. So picking themselves up, they start- ed trudging across the desert, and in a couple of days they blow into Dead Man's Gulch, the wooliest, the roughest spot in the whole West, where everybody fights everybody else, and blood flows like Old Faithful. Now it so happens that Homer the Kid and his pal, Gun Smoke Carter, the two most hard- shootin', hard-ridin' cowpokes what-ever straddled a saddle, were expected to breeze into town at any moment, to quell the shootin'. So when Ambrose and Bert hobble in, they are mistaken for the West's most fearless cowpunchers, and oooh, what happens to them! Ambrose is taken for the hero, Homer the Kid, and from there on out, it's a knockdown on the stage, 'cause bungling Ambrose, hero Ambrose, winds up by doin' everything opposite from what the cow- punchers' union calls for. He gets everything in a terrible state. He doesn’t get the goods on the crooked sheriff: he’s completely beaten and soundly trounced by Hoot Owl Pete; and he's practically hung by Stinkweed. He doesn’t get the heroine, Nancy, either. But he does get things in the most devastating of devastating messes. SUSAN STEPS OUT PLAY CAST The five thousand dollars? Wasn't it a terrific idea? I didn’tdare tell anyone until I was sure it would work. —I have attended Hammondville High School for a month. It was time I stepped forward and made myself known. These were the words of Susan Albright that seem- ingly caused complete disorder in the home of the David Albrights, who just recently moved to the small community of Hammondville. Susan succeeded in getting publicity when she had raised $5000. for repairs to the gymnasium. Susan's mother, Nancy Albright was very proud of her daughter. David Albright, her father was not so happy, he was afraid that something would happen to the money. Madge Weaver, Susan’s best girlfriend, stood by Susan in her crisis. Madge's boyfriend Jerry Conrad was ready to offer his services. He wasdead set on Madge and track. Bruce Parker, the most popular boy in Hammond- ville became Susan's match. Cookin and Cleanin'-and Nailin and Diggin were the jobs of Agnes Maple and Orlando Payne. Miss Hardy was the enthusiastic English teacher. She was quite a talker and had a great like for herself. Old, wealthy and retired describes Mr. Dunberry. His efficient private secretary was the attractive Katherine Stoddard. Susan obtained the $5000. check from Mr. Dun- berry. Later he stopped payment on the check and announced that he was going to visit the Albrights. Their home was his boyhood home. Mr. Dunberry had made his fortune in the harness business, the automobile put him out of business. He thought that what actually happened were visions. As a result of his visions , he gave Bruce Parker $600. , just the amount that he needed for college. Mr. Dunberry had owed the money to Bruce's grand- father and wanted him to have it. Stephen Dunberry promised to send authentic Gay Nineties costumes to Miss Hardy, just the thing she needed for the Centennial celebration. He also prom- ised to build a new gym for Hammondville High.
