It was built under the direction of the school board which was composed of I. R. Heasty, W. J. Gardiner and C. N. Ernest. The schoolhouse was described as being absolutely fire proof and special attention was given to sanitation and lighting. It was a two story building plus a basement which was only a few steps below street level. The basement contained the heating plant, primary departments and the gymnasium. Many injuries resulted from the concrete walls. The gymnasium was converted into a manual training room and the basketball games were then played in the Old Opera House. The superintendent's office and the seven grade rooms with halls and clothes closets were located on the main floor. The study library, recitation rooms of the high school, domestic science and the aud- itorium were located on the second floor. The laboratory, dark room and gallery were located on the third floor. The auditorium with the balcony had a seating capacity of about 450 people. The latest model opera chairs were purchased and so arranged that the audience was in close proximity to the stage and had an unabstructed view of the stage. The stage was large and roomy and the proscenium arch was sufficiently large. Special attention was given to acoustics and every sound made on the stage could be heard throughout the auditorium. That auditorium was located where the present study hall is now located. The first superintendent was George C. Wakefield. The Board of Education was composed of H. D. Reed, President; Charles N. Ernest, Clerk; and James W. Chism, Treasurer. The enrollment was 313 students and 77 of those were in high school. The first class to graduate was in 1912 and the members were as follows; Maude Stadelin (Mrs. Maude Ewing), Grace Davis (Mrs. Ileff Lawless), Sadie Kelly (deceased), Lucy Runyon (Mrs. Estes) Monzelle Ludlow (Mrs. Maurice Sharp), Anna Howell (Mrs. Orie Elick), Harry Garringer, Edward Harper, Jean (Jack) Stewart and Roy Moss. In 1928 a new gymnasium and auditorium were added to the north side of the original building and completed the present building. The auditorium seats about 450 people. In 1911 the library burned as well as a portion of the study hall. This brought about some remodeling which left the building much like it is today. A new Physical Educational Plant was completed in 1953 at an approximate cost of $200, 000. 00 (equipped). The new building is an asset to the Medford community. The present enrollment 111 students in high school and the total school enrollment is 308. Medford is proud of its school and the school is proud of Medford. DED CAT ON CpuyMc Coy.
