Every event which they planned was a great success. At the beginning of the sophomore year our officers were elected, dues collected, and plans for the Sophomore Hop started. Everyone who attended the hop, Moonlight and Roses, in May had a wonderful time. Our junior class officers planned the Emerald Fantasy, the Junior Prom, which was held on the eve of Saint Patrick's Day, Despite the snow-storm many came to the dinner-dance. Because of the snow, which had accumulated, many did not arrive home before four or five o'clock in the morning. Q Thanks to our senior class officers, advisors, and advisory council, the major events of our senior year were successful. The Senior Prom, Snowball, was held on January eighteen, and Mus' tang favors with moving parts were given to the girls, The Class Week activities, including the Senior Reception, were equally suc- cessful. The cultural and artistic interests - in- cluding art, music, drama, religion, literature, and philosophy-are what the colleges and universities term the humanities. My opinion is that much of the present interest in the fields of science and engineer- ing is motivated by the desire for money. This is all very good from a practical point, for Our Case For The Humanities money is something which we all need. There is something else, though, which we all need in order to have a full life. lt is the ability to express our own ideas and feelings and to live vicariously through the experiences and knowl- edge of others. This need can be fulfilled by use of the humanities. Science itself creates a need for the hu- manities. KALOOSTIAN Essayist The concept of brotherhood means good human relations - about which there is often more talk than practical concern. True brotherhood involves the relationship of in- dividual to individual, it concerns our daily actions. Brortherhood is something like faith. Religious faith is a concept most of us honor, but which we unfortunately neglect much of our lives. Then comes a crisis when our life or the life of somebody we love is threatened. Then our lips begin to form unaccustomed prayers that stumble haltingly from the heart. ls it not the same way with brotherhood? When danger sharpens our sense of common cause, we are only too glad to acknowledge that we are our brother's keeper, and that he is ours. Yet the common cause is always there. If we are all brothers on the field of battle or in the operating room, surely we are still brothers in the mundane surroundings of Fading Barriers our daily lives. The truth of the matter is that, although we accept these high principles of brotherhood, we are often individually too insincere in our application of them. This being so, it is especially important to document by living example the faith which we must have in people and in the conviction that differences among people need present no insurmountable barriers to friendly relae tions. Once men are brought together under circumstances that really permit them to know one another and to embrace common purposes and values, then narrow prejudices concerning race, religion, and color disap- pear. A very encouraging demonstration of brotherhood is exemplified by the Secretariat - the working staff of the United Nations lt shows the abnllty of perhaps the most dlver sffled assemblage of people ln the world to understand one another and to work together amncably Altogether there are some four thousand members of the Unuted Nataons staff repre sentnng the malonty of the natuonalntues of the world They are of all races colors relug :ons languages cultures and ldeologues Their habits of dress eatvng worshup mar ruage and work are varled as many come from hnghly developed and undustrlaluzed countrues whsle others are from underdevel oped agricultural areas There are Afrucans Indo Chlnese and West lndlans working slde by side with their Brltlsh French Russian Greek Scandlnavuan and Latln American col leagues There are Arabs and Jews Hindus and Moslems Buddhists Roman Catholics Angllcans Greek Orthodox and varzetles of Protestants from Baptlsts to Eplscopallans They represent capltalust and communust countries thoroughly democratac govern ments republncs monarchles and even cer taln types of ductatorshnp ln short just about all the barriers known to human relationships are to be found In the United Natuons Buuldlng However we fund that these barriers are remarkably fraglle for all these people so wldely dnversafned In orngln and background work and play together nn Impressive harmony Genuine understanding of drfferent cultures dlssolves and elnmunates duscrlmlnatuons Social and athletnc clubs are formed on the sole basls of common nnterests Thus the Unzted Natnons has become a con genial human company which IS enriched rather than dnvlded by nts many differences Thus far l have mentnoned only one of the great examples of working brotherhood Let us recall the saying lt s the lnttle thungs that count What are these luttle thnngs9 What can you and I as lnttle people do? Wim: Snowball Senior Prom Our Senior Prom, appropriately named Snowball, was one of the most memorable events of our senior year. To add to the win- ter effect a sleigh was used instead of the customary throne. We shall always remember the little snowballs, snowmen, and stars. The Mustang favors, which we all received, will always occupy o prominent place in our col- lection of souvenirs. 1 N , Q 'MZ 4 W ur Q W f ffx I sb ..-i.':?:F 1 r w 1 , 7 ,1 5 X Q mx 5 X 51 f f XX af' L A an L C X J I I I ll Z... The Mustangs drove 66 yards on some fine passing by Pete Sullivan and eventually reached pay dirt when Sullivan hit Dave Young in the end zone. The defensive play of Captain Bob Dell Isola was outstanding. Medford 0 Chelsea 0 Underdog Medford rebounded to outplay Chelsea and hold them to a scoreless tie. The Mustang line played extremely well. Maguire, Flynn, Sgan, and Young were line standouts. Medford crossed the Red Devil goal line early in the first half, but the T.D. was nullified. George Flynn saved the day for the Blue and White on the last play of the game with a jarring tackle in the open field. Medford 20 Somerville 6 Trailing 6-O at halftime, Medford roared back to defeat the Red and Blue. Bobby Dell scored first on a thirty-yard sprint and on a one-yard plunge. Dom DiVincenzo plunged over from the two for the third. Good line play by Piretti, Hill, and Lacey and fine running by Dell Isola, Sarno, and DeeVee sparked the Mustangs. Medford retained the Medford- Somerville trophy Weymouth 24 Medford 6 After trailing 6 O at the half a strong Weymouth team overpowered Medford in a hard-fought battle. Medford scored first on a pass play from Pete Sullivan to Dave Young. The hard running of Carl DeBenedictus, along with the brilliant play of Bobby Dell, sparked the game for the Mustangs. Medford 0 Everett 0 Medford once more took the field as the underdog against strong Everett. Although un- able to score, the fighting Mustangs kept Everett from penetrating deeper than the 28- yard line. Medford 7 Newton 7 The Blue and White were behind, 7-O, early in the game as a result of a blocked punt. Medford capitalized on a missed second-half kickoff by marching 40 yards for the touch- down. Dave Young booted the extra point. Carl DeBenedictus featured the drive with a 23-yard run. Sgan, Maguire, and Jack Ling- blom stood out in the line, while the ball carrying of Bobby Dell, Bobby Sarno, and De- Benedictus and the brilliant passing of Pete moved the offense. A last play T.D. by Med- ford was nullified. Tension Galore? Medford 26 Haverhill I3 The Mustangs exploded for four first-half touchdowns to spring one of the biggest Class A upsets over a highly-favored opponent. Every back in the Blue and White starting lineup scored. A dazzling run by Bobby Sarno, after grabbing a Sullivan pass, featured the scoring. Once again it was brilliant play by Bobby Dell and hard running by Carl DeeBee and Bobby S behind fine blocking by Ed Hill, George Flynn, and the entire line which made the offense. The defense again held in check one of the best offenses in the state. Jack Linqblom, Jim Maguire, Bobby Dell, and Larry Vass played Q 'fvfyjit outstanding ly. A What a holel Medford 6 Malden 20 Malden went 85 yards on the first two plays from scrimmage to lead the Mustangs, 7-O. Medford could not recover, Malden domi- nated play throughout the game. Medford scored on a Sullivan-to-Maguire pass after Captain Bobby had done some great running to set up the score. It was a sorrowful ending to an otherwise colorful season. Arnie clears the way Medford 7 Quincy 27 The Mustangs did almost nothing right after Bobby Dell had been injured on the fourth play of the game and was out of action for the rest of the day. A sparkling 55-yard run by sopho- more Louie Parella on a well-executed play set up Carl DeeBee's score from four yards out. Dave Young kicked the extra point. I A -:'.'.1v:51.':a:'- Front: W.
