However, the .weighty Everetts could not catch the fleet Medford backs as Bill Cudmore ran sixty-five and Fran Sarnie seven- ty-nine yards for touchdowns to drop the Crim- son from the unbeaten ranks. Dur- ing the football season as they marched onto the field clad in their new uniforms, they cer- tainly deserved the rousing ovation from the crowd. When the basketball season corn- menced, the girls Were on hand to contribute the traditional M.H.S. enthusiasm. Let's give a cheer to the girls for their inspiring leader- ship throughout 1952 and l953, and also to Mr. Pidgeon for his aid as faculty adviser for the cheerleaders. The Medford High School soccer team, co- captained by Bill Calvani and Bunky Boys son, winds up another season under the tutor- ship of Coach Al Stillman. Competing against the best in opposition, including college frosh and prep school aggregations, the Mustangs compiled an impressive ll and 4 record. One of the Blue and White's best victories came early in the season in the form of a great l to O win over Dirnon Vocational High School at Playstead Park. Dimon, a power in soccer circles, had invaded Medford with a great team. Angie Scalisi booted home the winning goal. Another powerful combination, New Bed- ford Vocational High School, bowed to the fast- moving Mustangs as their skill improved. Despite the roughness of the playing field, Bill Calvani and Angie Scalisi, the latter scoring twice, combined to produce a 3-O win. Travelling to Exeter, N. H. the Medford team tangled with a stubborn Exeter Academy eleven in the tightest game of the year. The contest, played in near-zero weather, ended in a l-l tie. No scoring took place in the first overtime period: but the Exeter boys, after be- ing awarded a penalty shot, tallied the winning marker in the second overtime stanza. The aggressiveness which the Mustangs showed in this and other contests won for them the re- spect and admiration of all with whom they came in contact. The soccer team of 1953 has added its con- tribution to the other winning seasons in the Salam' annals of Medford High School soccer. The following seniors were awarded let- ters: Thomas Boyson, Robert Buckley, William Calvani, Kenneth Elodstrom, Bradley Garcelon, William Garvin, Thomas Howard, Frank Lav- elo, Thomas Kelly, Victor Petreshene, Anthony Scalisi, Leon Sophios, Leonard Zizzo, Gerald DeYoung, Nicholas Aliberti, Michael Dellisola, and Clifton Rockwell, Mgr. 1953 Soccer Schedule Goals Goals 3 Revere at Medford SEl'Dl- 3U 1 7 Tufts Freshman at Med. The accomplishments of the nineteen hundred and fifty-three Medford High School track team are especially noteworthy, since it captured three schoolboy indoor track titles. The first laurel was the Boston Athletic Association Interscho- lastic Track Championship at Boston Garden. Two weeks later, in the same building, the roaring Blue and White tied Rindge Tech- nical for the State lndoor Championship. Cli- maxing the season was the grasping of the New England lnterscholastic Schoolboy Indoor Championship at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine. lt was at this contest that Tony Gianel- ly, hampered throughout the year by a slowly strengthening arm that had been broken, fully regained his old form and shot put 51 feet, 6 inches to defeat the National Schoolboy Cham- pion. The Mustangs also finished third in regu- lar Greater Boston lnterscholastic Track Lea- gue competition, losing only two meets, one by one third of a point. Mr. Murphy has arranged a very attractive outdoor schedule, and it seems likely that the successes enjoyed indoors will continue to make the nineteen hundred and fifty-three track season a truly great one. Crank l ., c w Ii' ,.en ' 3 The only sad note that can be sounded is the retirement of Henry D. Hormel after fifteen years as coach because of his appointment as High School Submaster. Always a factor in state- wide competition, his teams have held their own with the best and have won numerous trophies.
