ROBERT S. BELMONT 1944-1980 VVe, the Class of 1981, dedicate our book to Mr. Belmont, our former teacher and coach. In the brief time that we shared with him, we were constantly affected by his special gifts of helping and giving to others. Through his devotion, hardwork, and unending spirit he instilled in us the hope and courage which he had through- out his life. We proudly thank you for your lessons and your friendship which will remain with us forever. Tom Gorman, Front Row: Louie Louciano, James Preston, Brad Clark, Jim Driscoll, Rich Flynn, Chris Hayes, Steve Vanness, Jack D’Ambrosia, Steve Fetteroll, Dave Armstrong. 2’nd Row: Tim O’Toole, Jack Morgan, Bill Hoover, Phil Zabe, Kevin Mahoney, Jeff Peterson, Chris Burtt, David Veits, Tom Fawcett, Tom Caragliano, Gregg Mac- Kenzie, Todd Fairfax. Upper Rows: Bob Porak, Rusty Dauphinee, Win Crocker, Mark Boudette, Peter Kennedy, Bill Smithers, Bill Louciano, Girard Mahoney, Rob Evans, Bob Davis. Under new Head Coach Mr. Gaudiano the 1980 edi- tion of the Medfield Football Warriors had a very tough season. The Warriors finished up the campaign with a record of 0-8-1, scratching out a 6-6 tie with unfriendly rival Westwood. Despite the bad fortune the team always showed a lot of heart and enthusiasm every week. Led by seniors Tom Gorman, Lou Louciano, Chris Hayes, and Jim Driscoll along with underclassmen Todd Fairfax and Bobby Davis the team always was competitive and hard-playing. BOY’S CROSS COUNTRY Varsity: back row: Chris McPhee; John Loughnane; Chris, “Jocko Homo,” Cowen; Kevin, “Disco” Grace; Greg, “Chops” Lamb; Coacb Youlden. front row: Steve, “The Stud,” Palmer; Sam Nejame; Captain, Stu Palmer; Skip, “Q-Pak,” Cusack. With their four top runners plagued by injuries, the 1980 Boy’s Cross Country team showed much more talent and hard work than their 3-5 record indicated. Despite a couple of falls in Rocky Woods, the men used their fleet feet to the best of their ability, most of the season. Accompanying a new home course, was a new school record by Stu Palmer. Steve Palmer, with a great effort, and steadfast senior Skip Cusack, lead the team to a tremendous 6th place finish at the state meet. Again this season, the “Harriest” Harrier was awarded to Sam Nejame. Next year’s team possibly looks more promising with juniors, Greg Lamb, Kevin Grace, sophomore Johnny L: and especially if they keep up their guard when the GOW is around. ’ EOFIELII MEDFi J.V.: Left to right, Mark Greco, Blair Baldwin, David Cronin, John Larkin, Mike Slyne, Pat Gallagher, Sean Malone, Kenny Ness, 74 CHEERLEADERS Fall Cheerleaders (first row): Lynne Hennessey, Kathy Manganiello, Stacey Owen, Sue Ebert, Karen Crawley (second row) Jackie Reis, Co-Captains: Jeanne Develin, Chris Harrison, and Todi Stonefield. When the 1980 Field hockey team was first formed, their potential for a suc- cessful season was questionable. However, the level of skill increased each day until the Medfield field hockey team actually became a threat to all opponents in the Tri-Valley League. They psyched out enemies with their “Kick Device”. The Varsity finished with a 6-5-5 record, but every game Big Blue lost, except one, was only by a single goal, and Medfield had usually outplayed their oppo- nent. Finishing third in the League, the team missed going into the States by a mere 3 points. And w hy did they do so well? It can be answered in 6 words; Loretta Fahey, Dawn Henderson, Ainslee Wicks. These 3 women taught the 1980 field hockey teams not only how to play the game with finesse and expertise, but how to be part of a team, how to win and lose, and how to have a coach as a real friend. Next season promises to be victorious, but for the seniors this season was extremely special. They will miss Coach Fahey greatly because she made field hockey a lot more than just a varsity sport; she made it an experience the seniors will never forget. Wogs Ann Marie Susy Penny J.V. Un- derclassmen showing promise to coach Shea are Lisa Kunzig, Judy Cullen, Maryellen Fraser, Terri Weir, Marcia Wood, and Ari Allen. The girls ended up with an overall record of 3-5 after a season of hardwork and enthusiasm. Although the team was hampered by injuries throughout the season, they still played consistently. With an overall record of 7-8-1, the team demon- strated enthusiasm along with plenty of team spirit. While beating some key teams such as Bellingham and Holliston, they were unable to gain a birth in the state tournament. Next seasons team should prove to be a very promis- ing one, losing only four seniors from this years squad. WINTER TRACK This years Winter Track squad included, Coach Youlden Seniors; Jim Rowe, Steve Murray, Brad Clark, Tom Wotitzky, Skip Cusack, Gordon Harris, Jim Bruno, Tri- Capt. Stu Palmer, Jim Preston, Jay Harrington, Tim Rhuda, Tri-Capt. Jim Driscoll, Rich Flynn, and not pictured, Tri-Capt. Phil Zabe. Juniors; Tim O’Toole, Jack Hor- gan, Greg Lamb, Kevin Grace, Bill Hoover, Jim Tjekakis, Sophs; Tim Brennen, Kevin Burden, John Roya, Tom Reis, David Palme’’, John Loughnane, Chris Cowen, Mike Slyne. This year’s motley crew made over half up of offseason football and soccer players did tremendously well in the Tri-Valley. For the second in a row and ever they broke .500 percent with a 4-3 record, defeating Dover in the season finale 48 to 38. The season was highlighted by Steve Murray’s new 600 record of 1:22 and Gordon’s starting block throw of 20 feet. Strongholds during the season were, Tim Rhuda in the 40 who placed 5th in the league meet, Preston in the shot (4th in the league), Zabe in the 300 (5th in the league), Harris in the high jump, Driscoll in the 600, Palmer in the mile (2nd in the league but disqualified), and Cusack in the 2 mile (4th in the league). The team looks to be just as good next year with new uniforms and underclassmen, O’Toole in the high jump and hurdles (3rd in both in the league), Cowen in the 1,000 (6th in the league), milers Greg Lamb, and Loughnane (5th in the league meet), and last but not least, 2 miler Kevin Grace. 87 MEDFIELD BIG BLUE BASKETBALL Front row 1 to r: Coach Farroba, Bill Luciano, D.J. Back row: John Brabrazon (Mgr), Larry Fattore (Mgr), Peter Simonsen, Jim Belloli, Craig Eaton, Bob Porack, Tom Daniels, Chris Burtt, Peter Kennedy, Dave O’Neill, Peter Fontechio (Mgr.) The 1980-81 edition of the Medfield Big Blue had a very successful season while compiling a 13-7 record. Led by senior Co-Capt. Matt Nickerson, junior Co-Capt. Tom Brennan and sophomore All-Star forward Craig Eaton the Big Blue gave their fans a lot to cheer about throughout the entire season. Strong contributions were made by juniors Jim Belloli, David Robinson, Chris Burtt sophomore Peter Kennedy and seniors Tom Daniels and Tony Ruzzo. Dave O’Neill a senior forward was lost for the entire season due to a broken wrist. The future certainly looks bright for the Big Blue as 4 of this year’s starters will return for competition next year. WINTER CHEERLEADING VARSITY SQUAD: back row, 1-r, Kathy Manganielle, Co-captains Todi Stonefield and Stacy Owen, Jeanne Develin, Lynne Hennessy, Maryellen Weglom, Cathy Fraser Front row: Paula Quatromoni, Jackie Reis, Chiris Harrison, Nancy Ferreira 93 Thel980-81 Medfield “Bluettes” graciously accepted their name from an ecstatic, wild bunch of spirit-filled lunatics known as the “Zoo Crew”. This year’s liveliness and raging ac- tivity occuring in the stands made the Cheerleaders’ task of promoting ex- citement and pep much easier. Led mightily by Coach Cindy Crown and Co-Captains Stacey Owen and Todi Stonefield, the “all-senior-except- one-junior” squad “electrified and shocked” the judges at Competition for t hey were delightedly named 1 Tri-Valley League Champions. Before clenching the title however, the girls had to perform a tie-breaking cheer against Medway for first place. Later it was quite surprisingly found that an error had been made in the scoring and there had actually been no need for the tie-breaker; the Big Bluettes had already nabbed 1st place. , ® IL U ' ' ' CecM. s 74 ' GIRLS’ BASKETBALL C- m Junior Varsity Team: front row. 1-r, Coach Bileen DeSorgher.
