Hello Friends! j I remember well that the first few weeks here in the United States were like a dream. Everything was new; I met so many people and in addition 1 have not got used to talking all the time in a foreign language. I felt peculiar more often than once, but after these first little problems everything started to go well and what a wonderful year 1 have had! 1 have seen the United States from different sides, for 1 have had the opportunity to travel with my family to different places such as Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire. I have been influenced by a : different way of life and different people — so different from my Finnish upbringing. i All of you have been so outgoing and friendly; 1 have made many friends who have helped me in many ways to make this year a marvel- I ous experience. Especially I remember Halloween and Thanksgiving, both of which were new for me, and my birthday which was full ot surprises. I have also enjoyed a warm and close relationship with my family — the Kolstis. I felt like a member of the family from the very beginning, and with my sister Jennifer I have had many good times which I shall remember long after I leave the United States. I This year has been a year of such wonderful experience that I hesitate to say good-bye ' to friends, and it is hard, but Em sure that the I memories from this year will live in my mind long after. FIELD Sadly enough, women ' s sports took a step backwards in the form of the MHS Field Hockey Team. Actually, captains Monie McCarthy and Mary Kluga had a finer team than the scorecards indicate. Their overall record was 0-7-1, losing each time by only a goal or two. Team members have stated that funfilled practices made the season worthwhile. We certainly hope for Mrs. Kelly and the sport ' s sakes, that practices were better than games. Well, nice effort anyway. Coached by the alltime favorite, Nerbs, Captain Anne Bruno and crew opened the season with four wins and one loss, a record which placed them in a thre-e-way tie for first place. Naturally, as the season progressed, the team ran out of steam. At the end of It all, the record stood a brilliant five wins and five losses. It must be said that the losing streak began when the girls realized that the football team was also practicing from 2:30 to 4:30 and began spending more and more time outside. Fine job anyway team. With the great serving of Laurie Renzi and Kim Warren, the JV volleyball squad giggled their way to a good season. Madame Co-lace was the coach of the JV nuts who also discovered the football team near the end of it all. Soccer finally moved from the jungles of Elm Street to the luxurious green field of the Jr. High. However, after all that. Eastern Mass goalie Russ Wogs decided he needed a vacation and conveniently contracted mono. Medfield was in a more difficult league this year, which really seemed to bother the Hilperts. Ed, on all state all star, even went as far as to have himself kicked out of a game. Gags actually made all Dual County along with Bob Hilpert. Yea, men. The soccer boys ended with a 5-6-6 record, beating Dover 2-1. Not too bad, guys, we ll tolerate it. P S. Don ' t take us to seriously, guys. JVs also had tough competition in the Dual County League this season. The team was all sophomore except lor Doug Sharp an l Jim Hamilton, )uniors, who trucked on up to Varsity when they were in the mood. The last game was the best. JV BASKETBALL This year ' s JV team had an ex- cellent and exciting season under new head coach John Ekstrom, with a 15-3 record. They exemplified the Big Blue tradition by running the fastbreak and preforming the full court zone press well. The team had many stars which help them over key games against such teams as Holliston and Westwood. To name a tew, there were Scott Wallace, Tim Reardon, Bob Bready and Bill Nash. Coach Ekstrom plans to have many successful games in the seasons to follow. Aside from finding a few new shortcuts, this year ' s Winter Track Team tied one meet and even won another. Finishing with a record of 1-5-1, outstanding performances were turned in by: Mike Keris and Bob Ryan in the high jump, Billy Kearns in the shotput, and our man Himmy Sullivan in the 40-yard dash. Ed McGlynn and Keith Mozer also had fine seasons. Unfortunately, potential exceeded performance but. Coach Youlden ' s men and women are still our heroes. MHS RAH RAHS TRI VALLEY CHAMPS The exciting MHS cheerleaders, led by vacious captain Leslie Anne Morgan, Bptured yet another Tri Valley Cham- fionship. Not only did they add a new plden cheerleading trophy to the display Bse, but they furthered the progress of he sisterhood, showing that the female athletes are as much winners as the males. The Medfield Varsity ‘BIG BLUE’ Basketball team defeated the Holliston team, 77-66, on the Holliston court. It was the first time in five or so years that Medfield had beaten Holliston on the Holliston court. Naturally, the team was happy over their victory and wanted to cut down the Holliston nets, as it is customary when a big victory is made in the Tri Valley League. I must say that the Holliston fans were quite upset at the thought of this. The ‘BIG BLUE’ captain, Scott Watkins, was the first Medfield player to cut the nets, after receiving ap- proval from the Holliston coach. After the first net was down, Paul Reardon, you might call him a co-captain of the team, started to cut down the other net. He was approached by a Holliston resident who told him that she thought that he was terribly wrong. Paul immediately got down off the shoulders of his teammates and listened to what the resident was saying. Upon seeing this, the Holliston coach went over to the resident, put his arm around her leading her away, telling the resident that it was all right for the Medfield players to do so. After all, the boys on the team worked hard for this honor. On the way out to the parking lot, Medfield students were harrassed by Holliston students. Medfield students were called every name in the btxik, pushed and shoved by the Holliston students, just to mention a few things. I, as a Medfield student, tried to explain the situation to those Holliston fans who were harrassing me, saying that it was a part of the game and that if the situation were reversed, the Holliston team would have done the same thing. That of course, was denied; the Holliston school had ‘CLASS’. I’ll tell you what ‘CLASS’ is. ‘CLASS’ is Scott Watkins and Paul Reardon stopping immedi- ately when the process of cutting down the nets was protested by the Holliston fans. ‘CLASS’ is the Medfield cheering section, ‘THE PIT’, who didn’t tear down the signs in the Holliston gym, as the Holliston fans did in Medfield a few weeks ago when their team was defeated on the Medfield court. ‘CLASS’ is being gtxid winners and losers. ‘CLASS’ is being good sports. That’s what ‘CLASS’ is, and I’m proud to say that Medfield High School has it.” 114 THE CLASS OF 1976 LEAVES. . . EX n Akin leaves with a new patch on his pants.
