Brotherhood flourishes quietly in children —color never obscures a child ' s vision, religion never clouds a child ' s thinking. But as children grow, their understanding withers, and one day they are made to take up arms against a people they have never seen. And those who die will join together under the earth in a rest where color never obscures vision, and religion never clouds thinking. When will they ever learn? St ez ? The Composite Personality of The Class of 1965 In past years, THE PEAK has devoted a section to senior superlatives. This section attempted to point out the best ... , most ... , or most likely to ... of the graduating seniors. We, the staff of the 1965 PEAK, realizing man ' s inadequacy to judge his fellow man, have decided to omit the senior superlatives. Instead, we feel that devoting this section of the yearbook to all who have ever contributed to the history of Medfield High School will be more meaningful. We would like them to know that their contribution, whether big or small, is deeply appreciated In keeping with the brotherhood theme, the senior class and the staff of the 1965 PEAK present here an essay by the Italian patriot Giuseppe Mazzim. We feel that this piece, although written a century ago, expresses a moral code of great worth to our own generation. ONE AND INSEPARABLE We improve with the improvement of humanity; nor without the improvement of the whole can you hope that your own moral and material conditions will improve. Generally speaking, you cannot, even if you would, separate your life from that of humanity; you live in it, by it, for it. I charge you then, 0 my brothers, by your duty and by your own interest not to forget that your first duties — duties without fulfilling which you cannot hope to fulfil those owed to family and country — are to humanity. You are all brothers. Ask yourselves whenever you do an action in the sphere of your country, or your family, If what I am doing were done by all and for all, would it advantage or injure humanity? and if your conscience answers, It would injure humanity, desist; desist, even if it seem to you that an immediate advantage for your country or your family would ensue from your action. Be apostles of this faith, apostles of the brotherhood of nations, and of the unity of the human race — a principle admitted today in theory, but denied in practice. Be such apostles wherever and in whatever way you are able. Neither God nor man can demand more of you. GIUSEPPE MAZZINI Only a man who has himself experienced the horror of brothers and strangers bent on mutual assassination can truly understand the absurdity of war. The following poem was never completed. Wilfred Owen died on the battlefields of France at the age of twenty-five, one week before the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. STRANGE MEETING It seemed that out of the bottle I escaped Down some profound dull tunnel, long since scooped Through granites which Titanic wars had groined. Yet also there encumbered sleepers groaned, Too fast in thought or death to be bestirred. Then, as I probed them, one sprang up, and stared With piteous recognition in fixed eyes, Lifting distressful hands as if to bless. And by his smile, I knew that sullen hall; By his dead smile I knew we stood in Hell. With a thousand pains that vision ' s face was grained; Yet no blood reached there from the upper ground, And no guns thumped, or down the flues made moan, Strange, friend, I said, here is no cause to mourn. None, said the other, save the undone years, The hopelessness. Whatever hope is yours, Was my life also; I went hunting wild After the wildest beauty in the world, Which lies not calm in eyes, or braided hair, But mocks the steady running of the hour, And if it grieves, grieves richlier than here. For by my glee might many men have laughed, And of my weeping something has been left, Which must die now. I mean the truth untold, The pity of war, the pity war distilled. Now men will go content with what we spoiled, Or, discontent, boil bloody, and be spilled. They will be swift with swiftness of the tigress, None will break ranks, though nations trek from progress. Courage was mine, and I had mystery, Wisdom was mine and I had mastery; To miss the march of this retreating world Into vain citadels that are not walled. Then when much blood had clogged their chariot-wheels I would go up and wash them from sweet wells, Even with truths that lie too deep for taint. I would have poured my spirit without stint But not through wounds; not on the cess of war. Foreheads of men have bled where no wounds were. I am the enemy you killed, my friend. I knew you in this dark; for so you frowned Yesterday through me as you jabbed and killed. I parried; but my hands were loath and cold. Let us sleep now . ...
