c (li£.[cl I j c:: nA all our (laus j-ooU the. cuay to dusty deatfz . . . cSficdz£.sj2 £.aX£. ci j-nnuaf [l s:clicciiLon Each year, the Annual Staff of Mecklenburg Academy selects one person, who has above all, shown outstanding leadership. We have chosen a person who dreamed of our school and then made it a reality. When the existence of Mecklenburg Academy looked slim, he was fight- ing for its very cause, quality education. He has spent countless hours, near and far, working for the im- provement of Mecklenburg Academy. His services as a teacher, guidance counselor, assistant headmaster, sponsor, and coach have been incomparable. He has been at Mecklenburg Academy for three years and with the Mecklenburg County Educational Founda- tion since its beginning. In grateful acknowledgement of his worth as an instructor, in sincere appreciation of his wise and faithful service rendered us the first three years of our high school’s history, and in loving respect for his qualities as a Man, we, the Annual Staff of 1971-72 at Mecklenburg Academy, dedicate the SHIELD to Clinton Barry Hastings. Paul W. Cooper, Morris Hill Junior College; Wake Forest; BA, MA from Wake Forest. Although my connection with the Mecklenburg Academy has been comparatively brief, my experi- ences here have been pleasant and rewarding. The students, the teachers, parents, and Board of Direc- tors are among the finest people with whom 1 have ever been associated in a long career in the field of Education. If these groups continue their excellent work for the school, 1 am confident that through the years ahead, they will have no cause to regret but every reason to be proud for having done so. I wish for all of you continued success in a great and worthy undertaking. May all of you know that your contribution to this school, however great or small, will help in build- ing an institution where each student’s progress is limited only by his ability to achieve and not by the lack of opportunity to do so. This can be done only through the cooperation of all groups concerned. •8 C. S. ck OO ’B OCL id On behalf of all those who consider themselves a part of this foundation, we, the 1971-72 Shield Staff, would like to take this opportunity to thank each of the board members. We know that much of their spare time and many sacrifices were spent in an effort to perfect the foundation’s system. Countless revisions have been made in order to assure the foundation’s survival. It should, however, be realized that full cooperation from everyone is needed in order to make yesterday’s dream a reality of tomorrow. A. R. Career people are invited to talk with the students in order to better acquaint themselves with the many possibilities which this career offers and to answer questions about the training and personal qualifications needed. Any girl enrolled in a Home Economics class is eligible for membership in the club. Student librarians assist student in locating books and refer- ence material. They check out and return materials to the shelves, check on lost and overdue books, change the bulletin board, keep order, and keep the tables and magazine racks in order. Students assist with typing and preparing books and other materials for circu- lation. This limited introduction to the work entailed in the library may interest some in library work as a career. Special thanks go to Mr. Hastings. Without his cooperation, the annual would never have been completed. This yearbook is what I think the 1971-72 school year means. It is up to each individual to evaluate their own annual. When you look back on this past school year, remember it as a happy and memorable one. I would like to thank Pat Brame for helping me so diligently. May God bless you always. Thank you. Jo Anne Dellarte Editor smoz “CLIMB ’TIL YOUR DREAM COMES TRUE” Often your tasks will be many, And more than you think you can do . . . Often the road will be rugged And the hills insurmountable, too . . . But always remember, the hills ahead Are never as steep as they seem. And with Faith in your heart start upward And climb ’til you reach your dream. For nothing in life that is worthy Is ever too hard to achieve If you have the courage to try it And you have the Faith to believe . . . For Faith is a force that is greater Than knowledge or power or skill And many defeats turn to triumph If you trust in God’s wisdom and will . . . For Faith is a mover of mountains. There’s nothing that God cannot do. So start out today with Faith in your heart And “climb ’til your dream comes true”!
