But soon we'll be going Our own separate ways. We were brought together. And now we're drifting apart. The moments we've shared Will remain in our hearts. Remember class picnics. Proms, bon fires, too. Preparing the floats And all we went through Dances, vacations. And weekends together Are part of the laughter We'll remember forever. We've survived some lough limes. And shed many a tear; Bui we pulled through by lending A hand or an ear. The years we have shared have slipped by too fast. And soon MMS Will be part of our past. The team had a fine season. Junior Jeff Alonzo led the team with an overall aver- age of 179. Mike Salvadore, also a junior, followed his team- mate closely with an average of 176. Senior Bob Lavigne a four year veteran and captain, finished the season with an average of 172. Proving she could keep up with the guys sophomore Debbie Marotta ended the season with an aver- age of 166. This years team had two newcomers. Freshman Jude Marzano with an average of 153 rounding the tip six was a Senior Gary Lester with an average of 151. Also con- tributing to the teams successful year were John Blackwood, Greg Miller, Janice Boleski, and Heather Henderson. The tram proved that they can be just as tough as the top place teams. The Red Raiders placed third out of twenty schools during the class C-D Sectionals held at the Bowlers Club. While at the Colonial Council Championship Debbie Marotta was one of only two females to comeplete. The future still looks bright, even if they are losing veter- ans Bob Lavigne and Gary Lester. Next years team will be young, but hopefully with this years experience, they will do well. Row 1: Debbie Marotta, Jeff Alonzo, Jude Marzano. Row 2: Bobby Lavigne, Mike Salvadore, Gary Lester. Conforming to excellence under the leadership of Coach Mike Martone and captain Mike Dickson, the MHS Varsity Golf Team clinched their fourth con- secutive Colonial Council crown with an outstanding league record of 9-1. Team balance and the wiiiinnnp«; ; tn work were the factors that contributed to their successful season. John Jenkins, the steaditst performer this season, placed fifth in the Colonial Council Tournament and third in the Sectionals. Four year golfer Mike Dickson also placed seventh in sec- tionals and tied sixth place with Jeff Devito who placed second in sectionals. Coach Martone can be proud of their final record of 15-3, summing it up as a “rewarding and hardly sea- son with a fun loving crew. Row 1: Dave Shakow. Larry Maciar- iello. This team of hard working young athletes coached by Charles Kerls. proved themselves suc- cessful with a final record of 10- 0-1. Under the leadership of captains Teri Lester, Leslie De- Chiro, Jennifer Tucillo and An- drea Marx, the girls showed teamwork and unity. They were strong behind a high scoring of- fense having a total of 49 goals scored throughout the season. And defensively solid with first year keeper Chris Cavotta giv- ing up only 4 goals in 11 games. The stability and talent exhibited by this team leads one to believe the presence of promising Varsity teams in the future. Sports 55 VARSITY GIRLS' Coach George Dudas, the force behind this Raider team, has brought the Raid- ers of five years ago from 1-8-1 to 23-1 last year and 17-2-2 this year. After achieving their third consecutive Colo- nial Council Crown, the team ended the season with a tough loss at the hands of Cairo-Durham in the Sectional finals. Al- though the loss was tough, they set re- cords on all ends of the field. Jenny Spar- ano set a new school scoring record-29 goals-with the support of Dana Flanagan and Karen Culnane. Anne Volpe, Bonnie McBride, Sue McBride and Maria Daley controlled play in the center of the field. And behind Jodi Russell, Janine Flana- gan and Theresa Tironi; Dawn Dieckman captained the defense and achieved many things. They recorded the most consecutive shutouts in a season tying a section II record and gave up only three goals in 21 games. Dawn was personally named Colonial Council MVP, Class C player of the year, and Female Scholastic Athlete of the year. Dawn was also named to the Colonial Council All-Star team as were Jodi Russell, Bonnie McBride and Jenny Sparano. Shana Salvadore The 1986-87 season of the Red Raiders could be called the year that never was. Since day one in August, the Raiders were predicted to have a perfect season due to the fact that it consisted of 20 seniors, many of which were returning from the past years. However, none of this was true. The Raiders finished 4-3-1 and missed another Superbowl birth when they lost to Schuylerville 19-18. However, along with these disap- pointments came good times and great memories. The season started when the entire team spent a week at Echo Lake in Warrensburg. That week was referred to as hell week and it would decide which players would have the guts to show up for the next practice. That week was highlighted by watching Coach Taglione eat and seeing Coach Miranda walk out of the shower white as a ghost. One could also find several JV and Varsity players taking money from Coach Cavotta and Coach Polsinello after a nice game of Blackjack. On November 1 the practices, the season, and all the fun was over as the Raiders tied their rival Stillwater 14-14. The Seniors would like to say goodbye to the future Red Raiders and the four coaches who made those football years the best. Thank you. 60 Half Moon '87 FOOTBALL 2 Row 1: Mike Izzo. Tim Baker. This year they coached their team to a 3 and 5 record. Although the team was young and inexperienced, the trip to Echo Lake helped in the development of confidence and the ability that carried them through the season. The '86 season was filled with thrills and disappointments. The highlight of the season was the competition of the Class A Alba- ny High. While a discouraging moment was being unable to score on Greenwich. The strength of the JV program often led to a successful Varsity team. Winning the Sec- tion II Class C Sectionals, (first time ever) result- ed in Coach Lyons receiving a Mohican hair cut which will be long remembered. A new experience this year was a two day, twenty team Mid-Hudson Tournament. Many of the teams participating were Class A and AA Schools. Helping our team to a fifth place finish were seven wrestlers who placed in the top six. Placing first were Christo- pher Izzo and John Bolton. Chris was also awarded the most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Robbie Pratt, Craig Rivet and Eric Marx all placed fourth John Jenkins took a fifth and Bryce Farbstein placed sixth. Junior Curtis Tironi, Section II Champion at 250 lbs., placed second at the state tournament in Syra- cuse. Five of our eight seniors, Dan Pratt, Michael Bergeron, Christopher Izzo, John Bolton and Matt Coreno have wrestled together for twelve years. Craig Rivet, Dexter Carpenter and Mike Doten joined our team in their high school years. We have three Century Club Members. Chris Izzo, our first to achieve one hundred wins for MHS, now holds the school record at 135 wins. John Bolton fnnished his wrestling career with 106 victories. Good luck to junior Eric Marx who now has 105 wins. Led by Coach Jenking, the JV wrestling team put tremendous effort into a fine season this year. Basketball team successfully ended their season with a 13-3 record. Coach Gary hunter turned the JV program around - last year's team finished 8- 13. With only two girls returning to the program. Dawn Dieckmann and Bonnie McBride, no one expected much com- petition from the Raiders. First year varsity coach. Mark Polsinello, used the talent he had to bring about a 13-8 record, the best it's been since 1982. The team was led in scoring by Dieckmann. who made the first team all-stars. Although she carried the team, youth and inexperience were more of a factor in some games. Along with the only two senior starters were junior, Dana Flanagan, sopho- more nancy Cavotta and alternating freshmen, Su- zie McBride and Jenny Sparano. This season was characterized by a series of highs and lows. Defeating Schalmont, defending Council champs, in overtime was one memorable event, along with long, hard battles with Burgh to total three overtime periods. Let downs came when lack of experience dominated games such as Ravena at home and the sectional game at Fonda. This year was just a learning experience for the future teams of the girls’ program. Teams to come will definitely put up a good fight for council titles. Good luck to them! Row I: Dana Flanagan, Jenny Sparano, Karen Culnane. Dawn Dieckmann. Bonnie McBride, Kim Baker. This program will hopefully bring about many successful JV and Varsity teams in the future. 78 half Moon 87 MODIFIED GIRLS' BASKETBALL Dedicated captains, Tim Hipwell and John Blackwood, backed by a hardworking pitching staff led the Red Raider Junior Varsity to a re- cord season, 18-2. Activities and Clubs 89 — This year, an extremely active busi- ness staff participated in four snack bars. Due to an increased number of ads sold this year, it was possible to add sixteen extra pages. This was partially a result of the surprisingly popular section of messages from home which this year include pictures. Mone of this would have been possi- ble had it not been for the time and effort put forth by Mrs. Qibeau, Gina Rinaldi and the Business Staff. The members of Half Moon '87 would like to thank all those whose help went into our publication. 90 Half Moon ’87 This year the MHS Gazette has suc- cessfully published several issues of our high school newspaper. There is a tremendous effort put forth by the editor, Christina Cocozzo; the advi- sor, Mr. Gruber; the staff; and the typ- ists. Due to the addition of the office's new copier, the Gazette is able to be published more efficiently. Through newspaper sales, money was raised to buy supplies our staff needed. Bridget Lord, Mr. Wise MHS SADD CHAPTER Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) has grown membership to Fifty. Working with Mr. Wise was the Mechan- icville Area Community Services Center-rep. Maggie Seay. Because of their efforts, they have become one of the more beneficially active groups. The annual flower sales were run in March. Five students represented MMS in the countywide SADD Leadership Con- ference in Saratoga Springs. In December and spring, they carried this concept of the older influencing the younger to the 7th grade Health classes with their It's okay to Say Mo program. Their hard work and dedlcaton to the safety of high school students was reflected in their safe spring programs run at graduation time and the bigger and better post-prom gala. By educating students on the hazards of driving under the influence, it has helped prevent the tragedies of substance CAREFREE CRUISIM' Seven-thirty a.m., hundreds of students clamor on a crowded bus; others trudge their way through rain, sleet and snow; and still others, a select few, cruise to the great land of education on top of the hill. Their chariots awaiting, the few, the proud, the drivers, endure eight hours of walking through the halls of knowledge as mere pedestrians. The MHS parking lot lies full of remnants of our carefree cruising years. Who can forget convoys around the westside with tunes cranked and horns in full sound? Who can forget waving to the sardine- packed cars full of friends and the ever-memorable road trips to Allen Road, Lake George, The Capital? And may our popular sayings live on: The dangerous, Stop signs are optional, and pleading, Can I have a ride? The romances and chances of high school road demons monopolizing the streets till the dread- ful 9 o'clock curfew; may these memories motor through our lives along with our friends, fun times, and fast-paced excitement. Underclassmen 145 We, the class of 1987, begin to reflect on our past four years at MMS. As we pass through these doors for the last time, we can remember and appreciate many times spent together, how can we forget our excitement in capturing second place at the field day activities as incoming fresh- men! Winning first place in the float competition as sopho- mores seemed to have lifterd our spirits, for we cheered our class to a victorious first place in the spirit competition as juniors. All these class activities have easily bonded us to- gether and, though we wave a final farewell to these times, they will linger in our memories forever. Academically, the class of 1987 has achieved many goals. With the help of our local Congressman two seniors were accepted to the prestigious military academy at West Point. It is a great honor that they were selected out of many applicants. I would like to congratulate them, as well as other members of the class of '87, on their outstanding achievements. Within the hallowed halls of MHS not only dwells academ- ic excellence, but athletic abilities as well. The wrestling team did an outstanding job this year. They were Coloinal Council champions and for the first time in 17 years, they were section II class C champions. Both the Varsity Girls' Soccer and the Golf teams clinched the Colonial Council title. The golf team exceeded this by being named sectional champions. Though every team has its individual stars, it is the combined efforts that make a team victorious. Regard- less of the number of wins or losses, the spirit of team work that arises in high school sports has contributed to the lifelong friendships that we've made. LT COL OLIVER NORTH WILLIAM J CASEY DONALD REGAN CURRENT EVENTS 146 On a more personal note, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to the Half Moon '87 staff. We worked together as a team hoping to reach one goal—to publish a unique and outstanding book. As you can see, our hard work has paid off, and the outcome is wonderful. The new ideas that were put together have made Half Moon 87 all we wanted it to be. Thanks so much! Without your help and dedication, it never would have been possible. Best wishes always! To my Mom and Dad; forgive me for neglecting my obligations at home. You've given me much support and I love you both very much. Mr. and Mrs. Gibeau, there is just no possible way I can express how I feel. You ve been so helpful. Mrs. Gibeau, the work you have put fourth to raise the expenses for this book has been unbelieveable. Thank you for making half Moon '87 a success. Mr. Gibeau. you hung in when the going got tough. Thanks for not resigning from yearbook; as you can see. the many days after school, the time away from family and friends, and the money spent to publish this fine product was all worth it in the end. The Half Moon 87 Staff often referred to you as the captain of our ship. This is because your capabilities and advice have led us through a sea of knowledge. Friends like you can never be replaced. CORAZON AOCNNO FERDINAND E MARCOS NICHOLAS OAMLOfF GENNAOTY ZAKHAROV And I couldn't close without a message to my very special friends, the class of '87. As you turn the final pages of this book, recall the moments we spent togeth- er as a class. We entered MHS not knowing what to ex- pect or what would lie ahead. We've seen each other through the best and worst of times. Mo matter how much it hurts to think about it. the death of our class- mate John Ennello had an effect on us all. He was a wonderful person and friend, and we are thankful for his beautiful memory. The accident involving Roseanne Sgueglia has made us realize the dangers in this world and help us leam to be more cautious about them. We've shared tears but. more importantly, laughter. Our proms, dances, class days, field days. Memorial Day weekends, class picnics, seven hour school days and much more have bound our friendships so true. We’ve found security within the walls of MHS and it is now time to free ourselves of that comfort. Graduation is quickly approaching, and we begin to discover that we are not the same people that we were four years ago. With the guidance of our teachers and the help and support of one another, we have grown and matured into young adults, ready to face the future with confidence. Fondly, jkloyvnjJJ ' 147 CURRENT EVENTS As a crucial chapter in our lives comes to a close, we recap- ture the color and caprice that marked the 1986-87 school year. American hearts swelled with pride on the Fourth of July as the nation watched an awe-inspiring tribute to Lady Liberty. Both an enormous monument and symbol of America, the statue celebrated her firework-filled golden anniversary in 86. The spirit of royal galas was evident in the marriage of Prince Andrew to red-haired commoner Sarah Ferguson. Westminister Abbey housed the pomp and glory of the royal spectacle. The third July celebration involved Caroline Kennedy, Ameri- ca s sweetheart known for romping through the White Mouse. Edwin Schlossberg, a Mew York businessman and artist, took her hand in marriage in Nyannis Port, Massachussetts. Also showing the qualities of grace, poise and beauty, was Miss Tennessee. Kellye Cash. She was crowned Miss America 1987. Amid the splendor of these celebrations, it grew increasing difficult to understand the misfortunes that crept into our lives. The worst dry spell ever recorded devastated the Southeast. The plight of the farmers threatened what many believe to be the backbone of American society. Crack, or Rock, termed one of the most addictive narcotics ever sold on the street, also threatened Americans. The newly developed, highly destructive drug seduced drug users from coast to coast. Concerns extended beyond our borders as international tur- moil stirred conflicts world-wide. After twenty years of ruling without serious challenge. Phillipinc president Ferdinand Mar- cos was ousted amid charges of scandal and corruption. Coro- zon Aquino rose to power to face political and economic chaos. 148 CURRENT EVENTS The unappeasable Soviet-American conflict was aroused with the arrest of a Soviet U.N. employee. Gennady Zakharov was ab- ducted and charged with spying on the U.S. One week later American journalist Micolas Danifoff was arrested on the streets of Moscow and accused of spying. Both men were released within weeks, but the tension between the superpowers continued. In an effort to alleviate the Soviet-American enmity, an Icelandic Summit meeting was arranged. President Reagan and Soviet lead- er Gorbachev unsuccessfully discussed arms control. The leaders reached an impasse on testing of the U.S. Star Wars weaponry. Talk of weapons continued into the Iranian Arm Scandal that incriminated North, Poindexter. Casey and Regan. The Senate in- terrogations did little to lessen the ambiguity surrounding the controversy that left the nation in doubt. Many questioned Presi- dential involvement. Reagan s reputation was also risked in his brave stand against terrorism in the bombing of Tripoli. The Statue of Liberty Wing of Naval and Air force jets attacked five targets inside Libya in re- sponse to what Reagan called the monstrous brutality of Libyan- backed terrorism. Reagan s drastic stand aroused both support and dissent. Like- wise, the broadest tax overhaul in a generation was signed in October. The bill cut taxes for most workers while paring some prized deductions and boosting the burden on corporations. Radical change filled the nation not only financially, but scientifi- cally as well. Burt Rutan designed a light air craft that circumnavi- gated the globe without refueling. The unique design provided for cramped pilots quarters. Jeane Yeager and Dick Rutan were the daring pilots whose physical and mental fortitude helped make aviation history. The spirit of victory arising from increased American technol- ogy stretched into the world of sports. The race for America s Cup was clinched by Dennis Connor. Connor attributes his success to the new wing design of his sailboat, Stars and Stripes. Once again American talent and engenuity emerged on top. Perhaps the most spectacular victor of the year was Mike Tyson. The Catskill-bom heavyweight fighter is the youngest champ in boxing history. The twenty year-old has a 29-0 record; he holds the green WBC belt and the red WBA belt. The colorful champ brought recognition and fame to the Northeast. New York State was the home of champions this year. A great honor to all New Yorkers, both baseball and football teams reigned supreme. The NY Mets attained a sweet victory over the Sox at Shea Stadium, clinching the World Series in the seventh game. The Giants defeated the Broncos 39-20 in Pasadena, stealing the Super Bowl XXI victory. A world of conflict, a nation of change and doubt, a state of superlatives, these circumstances encompassed our final year. These events shaped and changed our hopes and ambitions for the future. They are a part of our memories and their im- pacts are part of our lives. It is this history that will guide us to our future. Ann Cavotta 149 CURRENT EVEMTS Marybeth Things never change.
