IQAto, Prof. Whitbeck called a meeting for the organi- zation of the next year's Halfmoon Staff. Virginia Lane and Hilda Mackenzie were nominated as co-editors; Twila MacPhee, editorial assistant; Marilyn Jen- nings. pictorial assistant; and Sal Izzo and Marie Caruso, business managers. The theme was chosen and some of the work was done during the summer vacation. The money needed to finance the yearbook was earned by the eager Halfmoon Staff who did a rushing business during the football season selling hot dogs and soda on the Recreation Field. They also sold soda and checked coats at the basketball games. More money was obtained by selling greeting cards, wrapping paper, pins, and kerchiefs. The Annual Halfmoon Hysterics also increased the funds. The business managers did a splendid job getting the ads. Most of the work was completed fourth periods by the Halfmoon Staff. The ensuing pages shows what the Halfmoon Staff has accomplished. The members in the picture are; Marie Caruso Salvatore I no Rita Sisto Patty Anne Wright Patricia Hogan Ann Sykes Marilyn tunings Haney Noonan Barbara Ramnes Meribia Merrill Twila MacPhee Rita Welch Catherine Buchanan Theresa Buchanan Hilda Mackenzie Ralph Marra Virginia Lane Veronica h'rucci Ubaldo IXAlberto Barbara Dugan Glenn Purdy Freda Bartlett Half moon Yearbook, 1947 6 Halfmoon Yearbook, 1947 — Foreword It was during the winter of 1874 that dozens of minor blazes swept out of the control of bucket-brigadeers and several times threatened to demolish a large portion of our community. The wooden frame buildings of that period were at the mercy of the slightest spark, and when ever they caught lire they generally burned to the ground. Bucket brigades had been used to squelch the flames but they lacked proper equipment and training. This fact convinced the citizens of our city that something besides elbow-grease and courage was needed to combat flames. Consequently the city’s first fire company was organized in the spring of 1875. It was known as the Mechanicville Volunteer Fire Department. Later, conferences were held which led to the formation of the famous Wash- ington Engine Company No. I on June 3 of that year. This company acquired a hand pumper, which meant that dozens of homes once doomed when the kero- sene lamp toppled over would now be saved. Applications for membership in this new organization were so heavy that in a short time the Washington Hose Company No. I had to be organized to take care of the overflow of would-be firemen. A two-wheeled hose cart and a few short lengths of hose comprised all of this company’s equipment. These two organizations fought Mechanicville’s fires efficiently for eight years. But during that period of time several knitting mills had been erected, other industries had been started, and railroad facilities and residential construction had increased, all of which indicated the need of further, more modern protection. Therefore the town voted in favor of a plan to secure a steam pumper and to organize a company to handle this new piece of apparatus. Thus it was that in 1883 the D. E. l.a Dow Steamer Company was organized. Their new fire engine, which still remains in our city, is now a firemanic tradition throughout this section of the country. At the turn of the century the La Dow Company was rated as one of the best volunteer fire companies in Northern New York State. The third company to be organized was the Strang Nome Company, which was founded in 1893. It claims the distinction of being the first volunteer fire company in New York State to secure a piece of motorized equipment. This event occurred in 1912. It was in 1899 that the J. L. Short Hook and Ladder Company was formed in order to supplement the apparatus of the town s other fire-fighters. Several vears ago this company was united with W. L. Howland Chemical Company No. 5. which came into being in 1904. Mechanicville’s fourth oldest active fire company is the W. B. Neilson Home Company which set a local speed record by building and equipping their original fire house in less than seven days. Today Mechanicville’s 3 (ire-companies serve her faithfully and are a credit to the community. Halfmoon Yearbook, 1947 7 DEDICATION We, the class of '47, dedicate our yearbook to all the firemen of Mechanicville. The firemen of our city make up one of its most valuable organizations. Few people realize how important a position these men hold. In dedi- cating this book to them, we wish to express our appreciation for their fine work. 8 Halfmoon Yearbook, Halfmoon Yearbook, 1947 Language Miss Mastrianni Miss Tilly Half moon Yearbook, 1947 Halfmoon Yearbook, 1947 14 Carmella G. This year five members of this society were selected to compete in a scholarship examination sponsored by the Pepsi-Cola Company. The winners of the scholarship will receive full tuition for four college years and partial living and transportation expenses to any college in the United States. Aristoi originated in December. 1926 under the faculty guidance of Miss Ackart and Mrs. Barton. The present faculty advisor is Miss Howe. Aristoi was originally organized to encourage students to keep their scholastic ratings high. Since then the new purpose of encouraging students to win scholar- ships has been added. Its predecessor was the S.O.S. or Sophomore Honor Society founded in 1927 by Miss Howe and Miss Ackart. The average for membership then was 80 - In 1943 the name of the organization was changed to Alpha, the first letter of the Greek alphabet. This word means excellent.” It was in this year also that the honor society’s colors were changed from purple anti silver to blue and silver. At the first meeting of Alpha this year the following officers were elected: President. Seraphino De Lucia; Vice President. Priscilla Haddleton; Secretary and Treasurer. Lowell Smith. A committee was appointed to take up a collection for the Alpha pins. This year Alpha met every Thursday under the guidance of Miss Mastrianni. The Service Club originated many years ago in the form of the Commercial Club which did all types of commercial work for the school and civic organizations Then the actual Service Club was founded and its membership was limited to 30. Today, because of the consolidation of the Service Club and Library Club, it has a membership of 130. Due to more co-operation between the members and teachers in recent years, the credit hours have been reasonably easy to acquire. Consequently, the hours required to obtain awards have been raised. The offi- cers were elected as follows: President. Ann Sykes: Vice President. Hilda Mac- kenzie: Secretary, Ellen Connors: Treasurer. Gilbert Schermerhorn. It was at this meeting that plans were made for participation in Education Week by the Council. At a later meeting suggestions were made to do something about the lack of cheering at the football games. Consequently, the Student Council sponsored an assembly in which a skit, written and acted by members of the Dramatic Club, was presented. It was on December 5 that a meeting was held to discuss the purchase of uniforms for the band. The Council sponsored this project and the students sold enough magazine subscriptions to make the purchase possible.
