The new members were severely tested to sec if they were worthy of being members of the Honor Society. The Aristoi constitution was signed April 5. 1927. Due to the brilliancy of the class of '41 there was an amendment made to the constitution which will eventually raise the required average to 85 G. The present average is 84' . The pur)lose of the Aristoi Honor Society is to promote higher scholastic standing and better leadership in our school. Remember Aristoi is the plural of the Greek word Aristos, which means best. A member of Aristoi puts forth his best effort in whatever he undertakes, be it in school or in business of living. Ye, the Class of '43, do challenge you, the Class of '44. to preserve the wisdom and scholarship we now uphold. The present members are (left to Frank Izzo, Pres. Peggy Chauvin, Sec.-Treas. (). s. The S. (). S. was first organized on December 15. 1927, with the purpose of acting as a reminder to students who wished to belong to Aristoi in their Senior year. It was originally organized for Sophomores who were pledged in the middle of their Freshman year; upon maintaining an average of eighty per cent they were initiated at the beginning of their Sophomore year. Two-thirds of the eighty per cent was based on the class average and one-third on the regents average. 1 he original name was Sophomore Honor Society, the initials being S. (). S. The charter members were; Olive Dowlas, Maude Van Dnsen, Marian tan Dnsen, Ruth Fletcher, Janet Orton and Elizabeth Perry. Miss Howe and Miss Ackart were the faculty advisors. recent years the society has gradually changed and developed into a Junior Honor Society. The average for admission is now eighty-three per cent. 1 he pins, originally purple and silver, are now blue and silver. The name has also been changed this year to “Alpha Society.” Even- fall and mid-year the society has an initiation of new members. In the future, this activity will be held only in the fall. Its purpose is to clear the school of children in case of fire or an air alert. To accomplish this, each member of the patrol has a special post. When all the pupils an' supposedly out of the building, for fire drills or alerts, each man searches a certain part of the building to make sure that no one remains inside. During air alerts, patrol members have to cover certain streets to see that all pupils get home safely. Ml members of the patrol are registered with the Office of Civilian Defense through the local office and each member has a registration card and arm band so that lie may be recognized in case of an emergency. Hinekel has been ready at all times to aid members of defense and war effort committees. The members have devoted time to help, in the ways they could, the Red Cross, War Stamp Committee, Boy Scouts, and other community organizations. A special project has been the encouraging of the war stamp and bond sales, especially during the “Name a Bomber” drive. Members of the club were on this committee and the club sponsored a prize for the person selling the greatest amount of bonds and stamps during the week of the campaign. Another project has been the improvement of the appearance of Study Hall. A committee was appointed for this purpose. Much of the work of this club consists of typing, stenciling, mimeograph- ing, duplicating, and other tasks on the commercial line. However, this year the members have been willing to do anything that would be of service. Girls of the club have devoted some time to aid at the Red Cross rooms. At the present time, the club is bowling on the Elks Alleys on Friday, the seventh period. The girls who prefer volley ball are using the gymnasium at School 1. In the club, a girl has the opportunity of earning a letter a year through the point system. She must earn 150 points to acquire the letter M, represent- ing the school. At least five s|x rts must be selected but no more than 30 points may be a died to any one sport. In basketball, a girl may earn a felt letter M after participating in the sport for three years. At the end of her fourth year, she is awarded a chenille letter M and a basketball charm. Five letters entitle the player to a sweater. t the close of each school year, the club enjoys an annual outing at Kay- dcross Park at White’s Beach. (Continued on page 52) 44 HALFMOON YEARBOOK, 1943 Football The Mechanicville High gridders enjoyed great success this year, winning four out of five games. They won acclaim and popularity throughout Saratoga County. The first game of action was held with Hudson on the home (field?). M. H. S. played a fast game and showed the rooters a final score of 19 to 0 in favor of Mechanic- ville. The next game found the M. H. S. players ready for the principal clash of the season with the ever-ready rival, Saratoga. A brave and heated battle was fought by both teams but, as usual, M. H. S. walked off the field with a 6 to 0 victory. During this game Nick Perrotta received the nickname, “There he goes. because of his speed and ability. Then M. H. S. traveled to Phillip Schuyler where they received a terrific drubbing. The succeeding feat with Scotia, who were the underdogs, displayed an able fighting team but M. H. S. nosed them out 20 to 19. The Red and White were behind 13 points at one time but became victorious as they demonstrated their power. In the last game of the season, held with Cohoes, Mechanicville made eminent progress and avenged the Phillip Schuyler beating. M. H. S. crossed the goal line four times, resulting in a score of 25 to 6. Much credit must be given to Nick Perrotta, quarterback, for his brilliant running and blocking. The rest of the players, also, deserve a great deal of credit for the goal they achieved this year. A number of smiles broke out on the players’ faces as they got a look at .lug’s 260 lbs. in his home-made pants. We understand that Porky Aldrich and Rinkv Medina arc going to carry the M. H. S. fighting spirit to the Army. Lots of luck fellows! You will be playing with a truly great team. Statistics show that Mechanicville outscored their opponents 76 points to 50: an average of 5 and 1 5 points a game. The members of the team are: First Row—Bochette, Daley, Guiles, Aldrich, Medina, Ted Hoover, Dick Hoover (Captain), Coleman. Gooley, Anatriello, Perrotta, Gaida. .Second Row—Valetta, Wood, Bruno, Medina, O’Brien, Jim Sullivan, John Sulli- van. Kelly, Abeam, Baker, Daley, Wicks. Third Rou—Luciano iMgr.), Federico. Bassett, Luke, Downs, Hinchey, Cole- man, Martone I Mgr.), Butler (Mgr.), Coach Wciglc. HALFMOON YEARBOOK, 194 3 46 HA LFM OON V EA RBOOK 1943 HALFMOON' YEARBOOK. 1943 47 Basketball s we go to press, we are unable to sum up the basketball season as it is incomplete. However, we will try to do our best with our 4 wins and 5 losses. The Scarlet and White were defeated in the opening match by the traditional rival. Saratoga. After an unpredictable fight the opponents were victorious with 21 points to the boys' 18. The next game was lost to Jones's fast, well-trained five of Watervlict. The immediate two games were victories over Stillwater and Waterford. The winning streak continued as they triumphed over Stillwater for a second time and Saratoga. Speaking of the second Saratoga game: Ed Hinchey, “Hindi,” recently moved up from the .1. V.’s, who was put in in the last five seconds of the game, startled the fans from both sides by tipping the 31-31 tie to the M. H. S. side of the scale, making the score 31-33. The winning streak broke as the boys were defeated by the Draper and Phillip Schuyler fives. Because of conditions beyond bis control, Nick Perrotta was forced to leave the basketball team. Hats off to a good player! The schedule this year is larger than it has ever been in the history of the school. This was made possible by the new laws cooperation with the ever- increasing physical fitness program. The members of the team are: First How—Yeat Alveraz. Yal Gaida, Fred McGuire, John Coleman. Chris Sgambati. Don Aldrich, Tony Luciano, Doc Dunbar, Jack Daley, and Fid Bochette. .Secoml How—Coach Ted Weigle, Don Daley, Joe Di Bello, Tony Anatriello, Stevie Di Ceree, Ken Medina, Mo Coleman, Yincent D'Amico, Badger Page, Emerson Boucher and Miky Martone. Third How—Bill Ahearn, Ed Hinchey, George Downs, Bill O'Brien, and Bill Thomas. 48 HALFMOON YEARBOOK, 1943 Seco Club The Seco Club is a national organization which was started at M. H. S. in 1927. The purpose of the chib is to make girls better acquainted with the field of home economics. The customary way to induct new members into the club is by election and initiation which is held at the beginning of the year. The Seco Club is well noted for their ability to serve dinners. Among the organizations which they served last year were the Rotary Club, the Boy Scout Organization, and the Board of Education. It is the club’s intention to do war work this year, although no definite plans have been made. The members in the club are: Left to riqht—Rose Lupo. Norma Lucas, Dolores Vitrello, Mary Angeline, Marion Jones, Patricia Conley, and Peggy Ciulla. Cheerleaders—Carolyn Kalbaugh, Gladys Hughes, Dorothy James, Pauline Sabin, Alma Connors, and Charlotte Bullis. Junior Varsity Cheerleaders—Mary Agnes Ronan, Mary Anatriello, Man- Jane Linehan, Janet Spohn, Marion Smith, and Patty Ann Yright. II A L F M O O N YEARBOOK, 194 3 49 HALF MOON YEARBOOK. 194 3 31 Class History 1940— Ye were green freshmen!! We dashed through streets, knocking down pedestrians in our furtive attempts to get to school on time, only to arrive a half hour too early. Familiarizing ourselves with M. H. S. did not prove too easy. However, we “caught on.” To overcome our awkwardness, the Monday night dancing class was organized under the direction of Miss Betty Conley. We, miserable, green freshmen, accomplished little that year. 1941— We decorated the sophomore home rooms. This year was really the begin- ning of our social activities. We still had dancing classes, but no “Arthur Murray’s” developed. A new member of the faculty, Mr. Ryan, organized intramural teams of bowling and basketball for the boys. Some of the “brains” were already serving on the good old “Halfmoon”, then under the direction of Rosie Hannon. This year, we really “went to town. 1942— We-were the JUNIORS that year and we made people realize it. During that year we really hit our stride as far as social affairs went. In Novem- ber. we held our S. (). S. banquet and initiations. The one that hit the top, as far as response was concerned, was the osculation scene between Charlotte and Lyle. During this year the sale of war stamps and bonds was started. All the rooms tried for 100CF; and when your room reached this peak, you felt quite elated. Through the course of this year, we lost three of our teachers, Mr. Rvan, Mr. Chandler, and Mr. Izzo, to the armed forces. In addition to this, our superintendent, Mr. Hayes, left and Mr. Livingston came to replace him. Tragedy struck at M. H. S. when death took the lives of two of our beloved teachers. Miss Hogle and Mrs Baker. Mary Golden held the reins of the “Halfmoon” then. To climax this year, we held our Junior From at the Mechanievillc Golf Club. It was a success!! Despite the war, we put in a good year. 1943— This year looks like one of the best, if not the best, for the school; but after all look who the seniors are. Immediately after school resumed in September, Prof. Whitbeck organized the patrol which does amazing work in clearing the buildings and getting the pupils home during an air alert. One of the great disappointments this year was the absence of the “Half- moon due to the war-time conditions. The Victory Dance, held in the Masonic Temple, likewise brought the war closer to our school. We joined the “Buy a Bomber” Campaign through the Columbia Press Association. In revenge for the loss of the “Halfmoon,” we managed to publish a printed yearbook under the leadership of Dot Caughran. As the year came to a close we were looking forward to commencement and caps and gowns. To the class of '44. we wish the success in their enterprises that we had in ours. 52 HALF MOON YEARBOOK, 1943 Senior Activities Mastrianni, Jerome: Student Council; Library Bt O S- C oaI ® ' ) Club; Halfmoon Staff: Chorus; S. 0.
