Annual Staff 4, FFA r,2, 3,4 CLASS HISTORY On August I4 1945 the Japanese srgned a peace treaty endrng World War Il Two weeks later I5 boys Bobby Achey John Albaugh Wally Albaugh Gaylord Beens Don Bohr Clarence Curtrs Roy Davrs Danel Dennrs Harold Goldsmrth Gary Greene B1l1y Johnston Frank Mlchael Joe Paxdar Robert Preper and John Frsher wrth I2 grrls Sandra Beach Karen Connor Verlyn Davrdson Danna Fawler Kay Hatcher Mar Ioan Park and Karen Albaugh entered the Mechanrcsvrlle Consohdated School to form the class of 58 We were greeted by our teacher Mrs Smay who had the duty of teachrng 26 young chlldren therr frrst year of school There wasn t much to leam thrs frrst year except to obey the teacher and to get accustomed to school After three months of vacatron we were eager to get back to school to start fust grade We had a class of 25 but our teacher Mrs Strong had a brg Job ahead of her Bobby Achey Frank Mrchael Sandra Beach and Karen Connor moved away whrle Brlly Johnston got s1ck and had to leave school for a whrle We also lost two grrls Kay Hatcher and Verlyn Davldson who decxded to skrp ftrst grade and go to second grade Srnce we lost all these students we were glad to have Raymond Hams Janet Maher John Coonface Davld Walderbach and Evan Grlmore Jorn us Thxs was the f1rst year we had to study Second grade was an mterestrng year for most of us Our class whrch had only I7 puplls was the smallest we have ever had Our only newcomer was a boy Max Thumma and movmg away were John Coonface Gay lord Beens John Frsher Danna Fawler Frances Rudd Karen St John Adnene Schnepp and Harold Goldsmrth Also there was Davxd Walderbach who decrded to stay rn frrst grade another year Our teacher thrs year was Mrss Sargent but later on she was called Mrs Vozbut Thrs puzzled us for a whrle but we soon caught on to the new name Once agaln we returned from summer vacatlon and started another year of school We were growmg In leavlng only 5 gxrls and I4 boys Th1s was the lowest number of grrls our class ever had Mrs Shaffer was our teacher and taught drscrplrne very well thrs year For an example one day she lrned up the whole class except three or four and made everyone bend over whrle she went around wrth a paddle teachrng the class not to have sand and st1ck flghts dur1ng the noon hour Dunng our fourth grade year we felt pretty btg srnce we were the oldest puprls on the bottom floor but Mrss Clark was there to make sure we d1d t get too brg We had a farrly good SlZCd class of 22 We lost Kenneth Watts and Evan Gllmore and garned frve new students Dorothy Stackhouse Deanea Smlth Ronald Messmaker and John Brunsmann About thls year we were gettrng more anxrous for vacatron to come than we were for school to start In our frfth grade year we met a brg change We moved upstarrs wrth all the older students which made us very proud This was the year we lost our recess and had to study Instead We looked forward to the frre dnll when we got to use the steel frre escape In back of the schoolhouse Our teacher Mrs Kern welcomed one new puprl James Wlnk to our class Two grrls Deanea Smlth and Rrta Russell moved away leaving us a class of 2l Thrs year we had several teachers rnstead of one Our home room teacher was Mrs Hodges and Mrs Mamnez was the other teacher who taught us Iowa Hrstory There were also a few students who played rn the band dlrected by Mrs Culbreth Thrs year we gamed Bryson Kelth and Cary Rhoads beavmg us were Ronald Messmaker Farth Phrlrpp John Brunsmann and Raymond Hams Our Juruor l-hgh days began when we entered seventh grade We had Junror Hrgh teams thrs year coached by Mr Erger and Mr Engelbert Our home room teacher th1s year was Mus Huckxns We garned three new students Brlly Tjaden Sharon Jackson plus Jrmmy Strregel, who decxded to take seventh grade over agarn wxth us We lost only one thrs year James Wrnk size, but not too fast. We gained Kenneth Watts, Wayne Robinson. Jack Biedenbach and lost Mar Joan Park, We spent our second year of Iumor Hrgh at the west end of the butldtng next to study hall where all the hrgh school students were located Our home room teacher thrs year was Mr Erger Thls was the frrst year we had study halls where we studred anythrng we pleased and were Wllh other puprls tn hrgh school We had one of our largest classes thts year wxth 23 pupils We lost Frances Platt Dorothy Stackhouse and Wayne Robmson and garned Carol Dalzlel Susan Mrller Sharon Welty plus Gerald Dawson who decxded to stay rn erghth grade and Joln us At the end of thts year there was erghth grade graduatron We all made rt and next year we would be tn hrgh school Our ftrst year of hrgh school was qu1te drfferent from the other years We had a slrght chorce of subjects The boys could take manual tratnmg or agnculture The grrls had no chorce they took home economrcs We held classes in drfferent classrooms and our desks were tn study hall wrth the rest of the hrgh school We were called scum and underclassmen by a few of the older students whlch didn t bother us too much as we had the prlvtlege of part1c1patmg in htgh school sports or other activtties Our class this year gatned Clarre Stabenow and Iamce Willey We lost Carol Da1z1el Susan Miller and Jimmy Stnegel In the Sophomore year we had a lrttle wider chotce of sub1ects There were brology agriculture home economrcs and dnver trainrng wh1ch were elective subjects plus world hrstory Englrsh and algebra which were required Thts year our class gamed Lmda Clay plus Mtttsre Sxtton who was enrolled for only a couple of weeks and then went back to Arkansas Bryson Kenh and Sharon Welty moved away The Jumor year was one of our brggest years rn htgh school One of the great responsrbxlmes was puttrng over a Iumor and Semor Prom and Banquet We also presented a Jumor class play entrtled Our Grrls Other money maktng schemes were the magazme sale and the Job of sellrng pop and other food at basketball games Thrs was the year we recerved our class rtngs after selectrng them rn our Sophomore year The elecuve subyects for Ih1S year were geometry typmg agrrculture dnver trarnmg home economrcs and physrcs Lors Anderson was the only new student and Brlly Tyaden was the only one to move away Our last year in hlgh school has started and IS halfway over A few thxngs of value that have happened al ready are takrng a fteld tr1p to the Anamosa Reformatory homecommg when we played agarnst Stanwood the hrgh school electron of queen and ktng for the dance after the game The queen was Jantce Wrlley and the ktng was Wally Albaugh The elect1ve sub1ects for th1s year were bookkeepxng typmg advanced algebra tngonom etry chemxstry agrllcuture and home economlcs Comlng to Jorn us thxs year was John Paulson Thmgs the class has to look forward to yet are the Semor play the Prom and Banquet Baccalaureate Semor tnp to Chxcago and graduatton The 22 students who hope to graduate thrs spnng are as follows John Albaugh Wally Albaugh Don Bohr Clarence Curtrs Roy Davrs Darrel Denms Gary Greene Joe Pardar Robert Pleper Drana Pennlng ton Cary Rhoads Sharon Jackson Gerald Dawson Karen Albaugh Janet Maher Max Thumma Jack Bxeden bach Clarre Stabenow Iantce Wtlley Llnda Clay Lors Anderson and IohnPau1son 1 - 1 ' 1 1 1 1 - . . , ' .
