I.. K-R.XH.XM liintipal ol' lhe High Sch: This volume marks a turning point in the history ol' your school. It reviews the glorious traditions of MHS. ln many cases, your parents and grandparents passed this way before you, making their contributions to a school now four-score years of age. Your elders have sensed the immeasurable value ol' ed- ucation and have assumed the task of providing you the best ol learning facilities. XVe know that you appreciate their sacrihces enabling you to enjoy a school program denied the youth in many connnunities. The future of your school points to a dual highway. In one lane will be a junior high school, giving younger teen-agers privileges ol' leadership and responsibility not available in a six-year system. Theirs is the chance to explore, to learn of their strengths and weaknesses, to lay the groundwork for more specific pursuits at the next educational level. The second lane will be a senior high school, giving final preparation for adult roles in our connnunity and, in some cases, lor continued higher education. lixpand- ed physical facilities will provide greater opportunities than have been possible in the past. May this book be a treasury of memories lor the class of 1957 and a beckoning door ol' new experiences and privileges lor all undergraduates. CH,XRl.liS li. During those bewildering days we didn't know where we were going or how to get there. How glad we were for a helping hand from any upper classman. In retrospect, those first two years seem rather dull, but somehow they passed, and we were freshmen. For the first time, we were exposed to the complexities of Latin and algebra, but we blithely tackled the problems with more daring than know-how. However, we had our lighter moments. Our assembly, for instance-a variety show and a play-was a big hit, and we held our first class party, which also was very successful. Our class officers were as follows: President, Dave Kapp: Vice President, Larry Holtzman: Secretary, Sandy Slough: Treasurer, Jonnie Book: Student Council, Phyllis Rhodes. Our very capable class dean was Mr. Vogelsong. We picked up speed as sophomores. Mr. Leitzel, our class dean, was our mainstay. For our initial selling endeavor we proved our worth by hustling Christmas wrapping paper. StarHre was chosen our class ring, and our assembly was a take-off on The Arthur Godfrey Show, complete with tea and soup commercials. Again the class party in the gym was successful. The following people lcd us then: President, Wlalter Fake: Vice President, Dick Renard: Secretary-Treasurer, Dave Moses: Student Council, Shirley Brechbiel. Our junior year started with a bang! We were very well represented in both Band and Glee Club. Our class assem- bly was America in Song, and our junior play was Love Is Too Much Trouble. We had fun doing it and, equally important, made a nice profit. We not only proved our talent that year, but also we proved our mental prowess when the National Honor Society accepted seven of our Juniors. Our Peanut Sale was a big success, the proceeds of which, when combined with other earned monies, allowed the seniors a memorable Prom. Our class party wasn't up to par. but the class members who attended had fun. These leaders held the positions of prestige: President, Dave Kapp: Vice President, Ron Miller: Secretary-Treasurer. Walter Fake: Student Council. Shirley Brechbiel. Mr. Ma- lone was our capable class dean. On September 5, 1956, 103 strong, the class of '57 entered the halls of MHS to begin its last year. Student Council was in the knowing hands of Shirley Brechbiel, the fourth female Prexy. lin masse we braced the refreshment stand for the big half-time push during football season, and Sat- urday mornings, few in ntnnber but mighty in determina- tion, the old faithfuls were there for clean-up detail. iVe did well enough in our magazine sale by reaching the S1000- plus mark. Senior pictures came and brought the inevitable moans and groans as proofs were viewed. We were very well represented in the Halloween parade by Queen Bette Bollinger and her attendants, Phoebe Neiswenter and joan Young. We presented A Murder Has Been Arranged as our senior play and held our final class party. Of course, there were the customary senior bills for caps and gowns, announcements, name cards, and pictures. A few of us fretted overcommencement. Will I make it? was the main question. The juniors gave us a dandy Prom, and of course we en- joyed Class Day at Hershey, Our ofiicials in this significant year were the following: President, Dave Kapp: Vice President, Walter Fake: Secre- tary-Treasurer, Donna Rowe: Student Council, Shirley Brechbiel, along with whom our class dean, Mr. Davis, worked hand in hand. As time takes its toll and as circumstances alter cases, we shall, no doubt. lose interest in high school affairs-even our own. Yet how precious this brief history will be when we meet again after the long, short, happy, sad, productive, and unrewarding years ahead. The re-hash is usually, we're told, better than the original, for man in looking back tends to reduce the bitter and exaggerate the sweet. We're about up-to-date now and ready to face the stern taskmaster called Reality. Somehow neither local admoni- tion nor world crisis can stem our eagerness to Challenge this giant. They were found to be a very necessary itetn, not only in the High School Glee Club and Band, but also in football, basketball, wrestling, and baseball. The first activity for this class was the annual peanut sale, which started during the week of October l5th. ln true fornt they reached their goal as MHS-ers always do. There wasn't much time between the peanut sale and the junior play, Dear Ruth, but once niore, under the super- vision of a new director, the juniors came through with a terrific show. In their class meetings the idea of the yearly class party was voted upon, and it was decided that this should be held in the spring. These were only a few of the numerous events which took place during the school year. The juniors are going to have the distinction ol' being the 0Fl.'lCERS first graduates of the new senior high school. lu-esitlent ......,.............,.....,. It was the sanre old story, books, books, and more books! They really went all out when it earne to extra-eurrieular activities, but they also came through in the scholastic department. For the class ol' '59 this year proved to be one ol the busiest. Under the capable leadership ol' their elass dean and Class ollieers, they proved their salesmanship when it Caine to the Christmas rards and wrappings. A elass party was planned to take place in the spring' and as belits the sophonrores, they endeavored to make it one ol' complete success. Since this was the year lor a new contract lor the class rings, they weighed all the possibilities before they took the final step and earne out on top with a wise choire. This year the sophs were quite an asset to Old Nl.H because they tackled everything they were requested to do with virn, vigor, and vitality. L FRESH N CLASS The lreslnnen, considering themselves old-timers, were lor the first time exposed to algebra, but they soon learned the tricks of the trade and went right on to make quite a mark for themselves academically and also in the musical department-junior High Glee Club, Senior Girls' Chorus-and in the field of sports -football, basketball, wrestling, and baseball. 'l'he election of the class officers was the first of a series of many events to occur on the lrosh calendar lor the remainder ol the year. The Freshman Class Assembly then came into the pic- ture, and lor awhile everyone was busy at work plan- ning for the big production which was presented on llanuary 30. ln the spring the freshman lancy lightly turned to thoughts of his party and dance, so once again he and his colleagues were hard at work, this time planning for the success of their party. In the objectively appraising eyes of visitors from afar, the most modern and productive communities are the ones which give their schools high priority in their public-building projects. This criterion is not infallible, but it reveals truth more often than not. Therefore, our town fathers may now justi- fiably pop a button or two and Httingly receive a collective and resounding pat on the back. Our gratitude is sincere. But however gratifying it may be to show off our new senior high school, let us not be swept so far afield in our pride and prejudice that we lose sight of the primary pur- pose of education. Let us humbly note that our beautiful school was not built only to convince impressionable onlookers of the progressive views held by the school board, the school administrators, and the citizens-at-large in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Rather, let us regard this magnihcent new structure in its true capacity: a tool to facilitate the education of our youth. The advantageous by-products of this build- ing are tremendous. Adult education. civic meetings, audio-visual aids, theatrical . -qs! JJ yi wwf ...49 'i N productions, sports events, sundry other co-curricular activities--all these academic accomplishments are richly enhanced by our new building. It is proper that this school will receive an official and formal dedication, If ambi- tion and circumstance permit, we'll be there cheering as enthusiastically and beam- ing as proudly as anyone. However, we confess mild glee in scooping, all others with our unofficial, but in no way ungenuine, send-off to Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School. With pride ARTISAN leads the way. The class of nineteen fifty-seven wishes you well, your majesty. May you reign in peace, thrive in prosperity. May your lucky star shine eternally. symbolic of your ded- icated efforts to mold the character and train the mind. May your keepers know good health and keen satisfaction in a job well clone. May your young charges ascend educational step upon educational step until enough of the academic and moral mysteries are made Clear to assure them the life richness of happily employed, morally steadfast citizens of tomorrow. From the moment the house lights were dimmed, it was evident that Director William Ketter- man, the cast and production staff, had spent many hours perfecting timing, lighting, delivery and the hundred and one things that combine to make a smooth presentation. The youthful thespians sustained their respective characterizations with the poise and assurance that comes only with careful training and attention to details. Costumes were pleasing and complemented the attractive setting. Special mention should be made of makeup, which was excellent, and of the special Dixieland Combo which opened the show. A Murder Has Been Arrangedw is a melodrama-fantasy in which the plot unfolds in a unique manner, making it doubly difficult to project. The situation of the play is the St. James Theatre, London. It is the night of Sir Charles Jas- per's fortieth birthday, and he is giving his party on the stage of this theatre, in honor of a wierd anniversary. It seems that ninety-Eve years ago a man was killed on this stage. Before his death he had placed a curse on anyone who would murder him, stating that within ten days after his murder a woman would be struck dumb and that when she spoke, his ghost would walk and reveal the mur- derer. This prophecy came true and it was to be repeated the next time a murder was committed on this stage. Sir Charles discovered that a murder had been committed on the stage of this theatre and the night of his birthday was the ten day limit set for the murderer to be revealed. There is also the factor that if Sir Charles is killed before 11:00 that night, 2 million pounds will go to his nearest living relative, Maurice Mullins. It is later found out that this man was not murdered in the theatre, but in the street nearby. Sir Charles fears his party is a flop. Enter Maurice Mullins, and a murder is com- mitted: Sir Charles'. The prophecy again comes true. A woman is struck dumb, and Sir Charles, ghost walks to reveal Maurice Mullins as his murderer, in a most thrilling and dramatic climax. Members of the cast were: Phoebe Neiswenter, as Miss Grozeg Ronald Miller, as Cavendish, Miss Paes, as Mrs. Wraggg Alan Wentz, as J im m y North, Lois Greene, as Beatrice Jas- perg Maxine Wickman, as Mrs. Arthurg Roger Da- vey, as Sir Charles Jas- per, Donald Darr, as KW Maurice Mullins, and Arlene Bell, as A Woman. The Production Staff included: Assistants to the director, Lorraine Christmas, Anita Kline- dinst and Albert Book, scenery, lights and sound, Edwin Swavola and the Stage Crew, music, Cecil Oyler, the Dance Band ,me and the Special Dixieland Combo, publicity, Mollie Ritter, chairman, Dave Kapp, Judy Freedom, Jerry Evans, Dave Moses, Larry Holtzman, Bill Lamason, Jay Ben- nett, Joyce Paes and E was . ,gp Phoebe Neiswenter, cos- tumes, Van Horn, prop- erties, Larry Holtzman, 3- . . .N chairman, Bill Lamason ' 1 and Dave Moses, Make- S up, Anna Hoffman, chair- man, Bette Bollinger, Sandy Stine and Shirley Breehbiel. ,K w L Xi i 'P if 'X fe J we wk 4 3 3'r9 A' J, if X C? fi 5 Tiff UNIOR PL Y CAST X Dom Nvclm S0llCIllJlll'gi'l' Edith l'ViIl:z'r1.s' Ninn Gillcm- AI 1' rin N1 -lzmct Davin-s flurry Wilkins Rullz h Clzxml XV11lu'1s Lf. A new innovation to the glee club this year is section lead- ers. These chosen people help the members in their group to iron out rough spots which they have encountered in HCM' SOllgS. MELODETTES Mary Fox's nightingales of '57 have really stood out. The girls, in addition to their singing ability, showed unusual sewing skill by making beautiful blue dresses which were first worn for the Christmas program. This year the girls were invited to sing in many places. such as the Eastern Star in XN'ormleysburg, the PTA in Lemoyne, and a Sunday School meeting in Shiremanstown. 7U 4 ' 4 JUNIOR GLEE CLUB ffl L lht lunitn High K ILL Klub 1 new Olgdllllllltlll 'it MH? this wsu is dnetttd In Xl ux Fox It comms of mem men from sutnlh eighth and ninth g,,r'tdeS who meet unix luutlu Intl ll1lllNlllX during., lillXllW pellotl In 'llldlllflll tt ltnllng dexntmns fm unltn lligh lssunblics the Club llfllltu in tie fllIlNlllllS l'mg,rnn and aso in e Spring l my nn dongs with tht I lu I lub Prrvtrlfnt ob ert lfought: I'ir'f',Prfasi1lf'r1I: Robert Greeng Sef'rftary-Treas- urfr: Terry Spaihr: ltiln11rian.v.- .luck Neibert. They not only read them, but also they break them down scene by scene to learn all they can about play construction. Another important activity for the clubs are the trips they take to the Harrisburg Community Theatre as the special guests of the management. All ter the play they are invited backstage to see how everything is managed. VARSITY BASEBALL The WVildcats, under the coaching of Mr. Alex Wardrop, came through their haselxall season with a record of seven wins and six losses and one tie. After an opening day loss to john Harris. the Wildcats gave the home fans something to cheer about by winning their next uve out of six games. Riding high they then lost to New Cumberland. to the dis- pleasure of the NI-luurg rooters, but they came right back to win the next two from Enola and New Cumberland. As the season drew to a close, the 'Cats lost some of their steam and dropped the final three games to Lemoyne, Carlisle, and West Shore. The season was considered by most to he a highly successful one even though the record wasn't outstanding. as the players showed good hustle and fine sportsmanship throughout the season. The highlight of the whole season was Eddie Harne's masterful no-hitter against Enola at the beginning of the season. The team was made up of the following boys: Earl Kohlhass. Ted Matsko, Eddie Harne, Eddie Rife, Dick Renard, Phil Houser, Carman Niesley, llurk Drtn'y, XValter Fake. David SCl'llll1lCk, Larry Holtzman. Bob Warren, Martin Coover, Karl Getz and Ed Otstot. In addition to his schooling at ll. of 1., he has attended Columbia lfniversitv in New York. Mr. lfredrick is a fire-ball at practices and a complete holocaust at gatnes. lt wottld not seem like a football game if you didn't see hint pacing along the side lines. As for his gvm classes, they are renowned for the bellowing voice which leaves little doubt that he knows what he wants and works like a demon to achieve it. During his stttntners, litne which is not spent at football camp is spent with his family, his tnain interest besides foot- ball.
