With this idea in mind, the 1949 Artisan staff reviews the saga of 138 Me- chanicsburg students in their four-year search for the gold mine of education and the nuggets it contains: the gold of language, of history, of science, and of art and music. However, the most precious nuggets of all are the many memories that the Artisan staff hopes this record of a school year will help to preserve. We of the staff wish to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Elizabeth Orris for her assistance as class dean, Mr. Royce Pearson for his advice to the class artists, Mr. Norman Hunter for his cooperation as photographer, Mr. Carl Hamsher for guiding the seniors with this book, and the businessmen of the town for their spirit of helpfulness. We particularly wish to thank the 1. A. Bushman Company for permission to use excerpts from Miniatures of Mechonicsburg and Harcourt, Brace and Company, Inc., publishers, for giving us permission to use the song Cali- fornia from Carl Sandburg's The American Songbog, 1927. Henry David Thoreau: Life Without Principle he Forty-Niners -ligh School ?en11sylvan:ia Vlay, l949 THE NUGGET-SEEKERS OF '49-PART l The following is a very interesting account of the Nug- get-Seekers. obtained from one of the original party who left Nlechanicsburg in '49. This is an interview printed in a news- paper several years ago: When gold was discovered in California the news of the finding of a new Eldorado spread from ocean to ocean, reaching into every village and hamlet in the land. At that time this busy town was only an insignificant village and its sleepy populace one Fine morning woke up to be overwhelmed with wonder at the startling in- formation that gold, rich, shining gold, had been ac- tually found in the new country-California. All was excitement and men began to make haste to depart to the land of wealth. Among the youngest of these who had the gold fever was a young man of remarkable pluck and business enterprise as well as abundance of brain and knowledge of human nature. He was eager and anxious to go and in a new land seek the gold nuggets which were there for the finding. That young rnan was Samuel Hauclt, who later became senior partner of the Hauck Gr Comstock Manufacturing Company. Mr, Hauck relates: lt was in the early part of the month of May, IBSO. that I left this town to go to California. There were seventeen in the party, viz: Col. William C. Houser, Wendel Hull, Isaac Hull, Levi Hull, A. G. Rich, William Peebles, S. Dunlap, john Zinn, john Neiswanger, john Coover, Dr. Alfred Day, john Cuswiler, T. Burnett, Alexander Eberly, John Culp, Harry Brown fcolorecll and your humble servant. CALIFORNIA l When formed our band, we are all well manned, To journey afar to the promised landg The golden ore is rich in store On the banks of the Sacramento shore. Refrain.' Then ho, boys, ho! To California go, There's plenty of gold in the world, I'm told, On the banks of the Sacramento shore. 2 As oft we roam o'er the dark sea's foam, We'll not forget kind friends at home, But memory kind still brings to mind The love of friends we left behind. Refrain: 3 We'll expect our share of the coarsest fare, And sometimes sleep in the open air, On the cold damp ground we'll all sleep sound Except when the wolves go howling round. Refrain: 4 As we explore to the distant shore, Filling our pockets with the shining ore, How it will sound as the shout goes round, Filling our pockets with a dozen pounds. Refrain: 5 The gold is there almost anywhere, We dig it out rich with an iron bar, But where it is thick, with spade or pick We take out chunks as big as a brick. Refrain: The American Songbag, Carl Sandburgg New York, Harcourt, Brace 61 Company, 1927. Hitching the horses to their Wagons, the ambitious pioneers of the 19th Century started the long journey across the Wilderness to California. There, in the year 1849, they discovered gold. The struggle for this treasure took patience, and many times the gold diggers suffered disappointment and heartaches, butperseverance led them on to glory. Starting to feel a little big we were the Freshmen of M. H. S. in September, '45. Bob Carchicli was our presi- dent, with Bill Callahan as vice president, and Allen Heiges, our student council representative. The ninth grade assembly and class party were loads of fun. Being a Sophomore was big stuff! At last We were one of the big three in senior high. Bob Hann, president, Louise Brinton, vice president, Bill Callahan, secretary and treasurer, and Peggy Hoffman, student council repre- sentative, presided as our class officers and helped to choose our class rings. The Ghostly Passenger, our memorable dramatic play, and the class party under the supervision of Miss Bear, were the two top episodes of the year. Oh, but being a lunior was even bigger stuff! We had our class rings, we had a successful lunior play, Star Light, Star Bright, which boasted standing room only, we put on a hilarious variety show in assembly, we had hard working class officers: president, Mary K. Gleim, vice president, lacqueline Grundon, secretary and treasurer, Carole Mancuso, student council representative, Alva Stephenson, and lastly we played host to the class of '48 at Allenberry on May l 5th. Now we are the biggest stuff! We started this busy year selling hot dogs, candy, and pop at our home football games . . . we sold magazines . . . we played football . . . we cheered . . . we sang with the glee club . . . our senior play attracted a full house . . . we played and Watched basketball . . . we worked on the stage . . . we did trig. and all those English themes . . . we had fun at school dances . . . and we happily remember the lunior- Senior prom and class day. Mrs. Orris, our class dean, worked with our class officers: George Wagner, president, Kay Gleim, vice president and student council representative, Alva Stephenson, secre- tary and treasurer. All those happy events added up to our last thrilling experiences at M. H. S. As we solemnly listened to our inspiring Baccalaureate Services and Commencement Exercises, each thought of his own future plans in life, no more would we all be working together. A Many times the struggle for our diplomas took patience. We had disappointments and heartaches, lots of fun and experiences We will always cherish. However, when We finally received our gold nug- gets We lcnew that they were well worth the effort. . En imcmnliam Evelyn Annabell Yinger Born: April 21, 1931 Died: April 25, 1948 1849 - Prospectors - 1949 As an editorial comment on the song California, which forms the theme of this Artisan, Carl Sandburg wrote: News came from Sutter's Creek: ten men shook pay dirt through hand screens and found a million dollars apiece in gold nuggets, the San Francisco city council adjourned without setting a date when it would meet again, churches closed their doors, newspapers stopped printing, ships lay in harbor with no sailors, cooks and soldiers ran away from military forts. A free- for-all rush started to the gold diggings: a spade sold for S1,000.00. It was news that made New York and London sit up. Across the Great Plains came wagon trains, in ten miles along the Platte River a traveler counted 459 wagons. At the trail's end was gold and California.' ' News came from Mechanicsburg High: 138 seniors smoothed out their brand new diplomas and discovered they were holding a million dollars apiece in their hands. Though the world went on much as before, each felt as though a new frontier had sud- denly opened before him. Each in his own way would contribute to a new era-some would become famous, others would sense only deep personal satisfaction-but at the trail's end there would be gold for them all. Except Wh en troubles Coover Mumma Neff Badort lunior Class Record With only one more year to go, the juniors of M.H.S. can look with pride upon the partially completed record of their high school years. Always an active class, many juniors participated in the band and glee club, worked for the Torch and stage crew, applied make-up for dramatic productions, or took snapshots for the photography club. Since their days in lunior High School, this class has furnished gridiron, basketball court, and baseball diamond with capable material. Outstanding representatives of the juniors in athletics were: Charles Alexan- der, Don Badorf, Dave Coover, Don Corn- man, lack lordan, Charles Kohlhaas and Charles Miller. Two junior girls brightened the cheer- leader squad: Beverly Neff and Eleanor Stansfield. Eight members of the class of '50, Charles Alexander, Don Badorf, Marjorie Brandt, lanet Bricker, Dave Coover, lean Eckert, loan Gilbert, and Dorothy Waggoner, worked hard and were rewarded for their scholastic efforts at mid-semesters when they were elected to the National Honor Society. As Sophomores, the play Elmer and the Lovebug was produced by the class of '50 under the direction of Miss Bear, and proved a great success both in M.H.S. and at Susque- hanna Township where it was presented as an exchange program. Included in the cast were: Gretchen Berkheimer, Peggy Gill, Beverly Neff, Barbara Rodenhiser, lack lor- dan, Ray Hutter, Marlene Durston and Herb Gibney. This year the juniors chose l'And Came The Spring as their class play, and once more proved themselves talented actors. The cast was composed of loan Gilbert, Douglas Hoskins, Helena Wilson, Beverly Neff, Dave Coover, Lee Cronican, Sheila Conway, Dan Kennedy, lack lordan, Bar- bara Low, Marlene Durston, Mary Ardis, Quay Hamilton, George Corl, and Dick Moyer. Following only one year behind the original miners, the juniors will find gold still plentiful at the diggings -it is for them to put it to use. Forty-eigh t H Girls' Game Oh, Mr. G.! King and Queen Smiles . Come howling round Sophomore Class Record Starting their journey this year the Sophomores selected the unique style, The Flame, for their class rings. This style is the first of the oblong rectangular type any M.H.S. class has chosen, but in time to come it will be an accepted class-ring style ot jewelers. Well represented on the football field as members of last year's ninth grade squad and this year's junior varsity and varsity squads, they are proud that athletes Cuthbert and Vic Powley were among their members. The basketball and baseball teams had Sophomores among their members, also. Breaking the no-boy tradition of a few years standing, Gordon Deckman and limmy Hostetter were elected to the varsity cheerleading squad. The Torch, glee club, band, stage crew, and other clubs had many Sophomore members. The dramatic ability of this class was displayed in their class assemblies. Their ninth grade presentation was a short skit Have You Had Your Operation? This year their assembly was the play entitled ' 'Molly. As the Sophomores look to the future they plan for the golden opportunities offered them as upper classmen. Cuthbert Weaver Turo Whitcomb F orty-nine Then ho, boys, ho! Homeroom 27 ........,. Our football team worked hard and, with its heavy line and speedy back- tield, captured third place in the Southern Pennsylvania Conference. The three school basketball teams provided entertainment throughout the rest ot the winter months. With the spring came renewed activity on the baseball diamond. Although the uForty-niners tailed to capture any championships, Me- chanicsburg, because ot its outstanding school spirit and sportsmanship, is still one of the most desirable places for any young man or woman with athletic am- bitions to settle.
