The Naval Supply Depot, the Red Cross, Air Raid VVardens, blood donors, airplane spotters, scrap drives, First Aid Classes, the Com- munity Chest, Civilian Defense VVorkers-all these things and peoples are a part of Mechanics- burg's contribution to the winning of the war. The part of which We are the most proud is the 'LRoll of Honor, containing names of many of Mechanicsburg High School's sons and daughters in the armed forces. l . The artisan, or skilled Workman, is exceptionally well repre- sented in this thriving town, settled by a small group of me- chanics in the late I700yS. Carpenters, plumbers, steamfitters- all have answer the call to prepare for defense and offense. In a broader sense, all persons who create, either with the hands or the mind, might be called artisanslteachers, storekeepers, con- tractors, ministers, cabinet-makers-everyone. In the following pages we have endeavored to show you that the artisan has gone to war. I ,V ,f ,Z . v 'IIHIHIHIE UILASSHES SENlUSl1S JUNIURS SUPHUMUHES PHESHMEN GRADES BUILDERS s WE, the members of the 1943 graduating class of the Mechanicsburg High School, answer our country's call for men and women for the armed forces, for business and war production industries, for college edu- cation, and for intelligent leaders in government-all of us taking willingly the responsibilities of total war-we face a grimmer world than we have ever known. But we cannot help looking back to remember that small world of happiness of our high school years when we revelled in study, play participation, and achievement. As we recall our life in this beautiful, little world we gain a certain sense of satisfaction that there are such things as this to live and die for in a troubled age. We started our Sophomore year well-represented in sports, music and other activities and our class party uniquely featured a stage show. Our junior play Yes and No and our assembly program Helza- poppin, which was based on the rollicking musical comedy of the same name, and written and directed by one of our own juniors gave us a chance to Show our talents. Original nautical decorations helped to make our junior-Senior Prom a delightfully memorable event. Although our senior year was broken up by the' loss of class- mates who entered the armed forces, colleges, and war produc- - tion, we tried to make the last year of high school our best year. ' M 'fir' Our scholastic standing was high and five of us were members of the National Hon- or Society. We composed the eighth annual edition of the Handbook, the eighteenth volume of the Torch and the twelfth an- nual edition of the year- book. We talked on the Sound System broad- casts and sang in the Glee Club. YVe played our horns and violins in the band and the orchestra. Y !i3Q1kh M ' KEEP A RECORD Many of our boys excelled in football, basketball, baseball and tennis teams. Our girls, too, enjoyed basketball and volleyball. We planned in the Victory Committee, we worked in the Red Cross Club, we studied pre-induction courses for the armed forces, and for indus- try and we participated in many war drives. Our class play, Minick, by Kauffman and Ferber, proclaimed one of the best comedies given at our school, and our senior assembly, The Man Without a Country, displayed new acting ability among us. During the last four months of school we seniors worked on the Basehore Essay entitled f'General Grant, a title suggested by the award donor, Attorney Samuel Basehore. Memories of music, dancing and wonderful times had at the prom which the juniors gave for us and fond recollections of our own class day, will never be forgotten. S Our Baccalaureate Services were held in the auditorium, one june eve- ning, and finally, after working well and hard in these our high school years, we received our diplomas at the commencement. Now we, the class of '43, are ready to answer our country's call. Right in our own town we may take a small part in winning this war. The new Mechanicsburg Naval Supply Depot, and several industrial plants located in the town offer chal- lenges for those of us who wish to help speed up war production and enter the business and industrial world. just as we, the members ' of the class of '43 accept our responsibilities in the armed forces, business, industry, education and government for the winning of this war, may we also accept our re- sponsibilities in t h e winning and maintain- ing of a just a n d durable peace. A 'IQ' A BUILDERS EUR THE FUTURE FTER four years in high school it is customary to write a prophecy. Such a look ahead then, should be made for the class of forty-three. All through our high school years We planned to establish a basis for a successful future in a world at peace. We hoped that as we left M. H. S. we could continue with our plans. Because of the war, which has disrupted our program so greatly, our plans for further education, business, industry and other occupations in which we would probably engage will have to be postponed. Yes, postponed until the boys of our class have done their share in the armed serv- ices in the uniform of the Army, the Navy, the Marines or in the uniform of the production line. In time we expect to see the girls strengthening the boys at the front by joining the W. A. A. C. S., W. A. V. E. S., S. P. A. R. S., Marines, be- coming nurses or ina most fundamental part of the war, defense work. Although our prophecy is brief, one h' ' t ing about which we can be certain is that the members of the class of '43 will be hav- ing a full share in outlin- ing plans for a last- ing peace. JUUR EYME ' HLTURY T LAST the members of the Class of '44 have attained the coveted name of upperclassmen and during our year as juniors we participated in many of our. school's activities. We were well-represented in football, basketball, and other sports. For the annual junior play we chose june Mad, a three-act comedy under the direction of Miss lrva Zim- merman, class dean. With the cooperation of the cast, teachers, committees and the stage crew the show went on and was well received by the audience. We were well-represented in the extra-curricular ac- tivities, clubs and the band and chorus. When the time for our assembly program came the committee chose a musical variety show containing two acts. The first act followed parts of the musical comedy, This ls the Army. The second act was a night club scene featuring a floor show containing songs of the gay nineties. Fifty-three boys of our class are studying electricity, machines, and shop, and most of our boys and girls are taking the physical fitness course under the new pre- induction program. Even though there have been many changes around M.H.S. and there may be more, we, the Class of '44, feel that we have had a successful and enjoyable year as juniors. class. A.- . PPRE TICE HI TURY . LTHOUGH our Sophomore year was lived during a 4 vear of wx ar, we, the Class of 45, cooperated fullv ' to help M.H.S take a part in winning the vxar i Both the Varsity and the jay vee football and basket ' ball teams were ably reinforced by membeis of our class, and this, we are convinced, played some part in the record seasons of these teams Nor was athletics the only field in which the Class of '45 was active When there were club meetings scrap and bond, drives, concerts or other extra curricular ac tivities, one could generally find some up and coming Soph around. We are particularly happy that in a time of change made necessary by the demands of a world at war, we can continue a record of the things that have made M. H. S. outstanding among high schools in this area. The editorial Staff under the direction of Mr. Hamsher, and the adver- tising staff under the direction of Mrs. Orris have given many hours of thought and labor to this book which is in one way experimental since it is printed by the offset PFOCCSS, 21 method of printing that does away with engraving plates. However, because the book is printed by the offset method, you see the en- tire page as it was planned by some member of the staff, then photographed by the printer.
