Nc-rvously he stood in line, chewing his long white beard, a continuation of l1is hair, which streamed out the door and down the hall to Locust Street. Attired in a lion skin and sandals, the Alien quite overwhelmed the Office Inmates, who went into a huddle which they hoped was not too obvious. They solemnly pointed him out to each other, to make sure that they were not seeing things. Efficiently, the U. Ifs herded the waiting line Cwith the exception of the Alieni into the hall, giving each person therein a little push, to facilitate a hasty exodus. Then they firmly locked the door. Cautiously they asked the Alien who he was, whence he came, and what he wanted. He said his name was Publius, The last thing he could remember was the fall of Rome. He believed that Home must have fallen on him while he was hunting wild boar. At any rate. every- thing had gone black for a few centuries. Vllhen he awoke, in 1892, he was sitting on a cloud over which the North and lvest Wlinds were battling for possession. Clhancing to glance down, he saw dear old HI. H. S. in the process of construction. and, filled with nostalgia for his own school days, he was about to spread his long hair and drop, whe11 the North lVind, victorious, fiercely blew him to other climes. Page for fy-two Class History S NEXT year's Seniors, we realize our responsibility, and we hope to make additional gains for lvlechanicsburg High School. lVe do feel that as Juniors we have made contributions to the honor of our Alma Mater. This is the second year that Juniors were under contract for the standard seal for our class rings, and we continued that practice. Vile were the first class in the history of the school to have our rings before 'Thanksgiving Day. VVe had many students who were active in sports this year, and they will certainly make a notable contribution to next year's athletics. Our Assembly Program, a play, At Albright Prep,', was well received. VVe boast of outstanding musicians, both in vocal and instrumental work. There were a few orators in our class who contributed service by way of the Debating Team, and a member of our class won the coveted After-Dinner Speaking Trophy presented yearly by Gettysburg College. Our Prom was a success. The decorations were novel, the music was excellent, and the programs will long be cherished by our guests. No history of the Juniors would be complete without mention being made of our Jonesy.,' This show, under the direction of our class Dean, proved to be an excellent comedy full of humorous situations. After all, high scholar- ship is merely an indication that a job has been Well done. The doing of anything to the best of one,s ability is a most valuable habit to acquire. A chapter of the National Honor Society, the Phi Beta Kappa of the secondary school, is being in- stalled in the lVIechanicsburg High School at this writing. Its function will be to recognize and stimulate scholarship. Students will be elected to inenlbership on the basis of scholarship and by Vote of the faculty. Our school should give its plaudits on the basis of How well did you do it? and Il0t on the basis of VVhat did you do? Good scholarship should be the first goal of every student-that is, Working up to the full measure of oness ability. I'artieipation in some extra-curricular activity suited to the indiVidual's interests and abilities should be the next. S., the cheerleading squad experienced what was probably one of their most successful years. as far as cheerleading goes. The ability to be good winners, and yet in time of defeat being able to keep their heads up was the spirit that kept this squad functioning so well. Setting an example for good sportsmanship, the Cheerleaders vigorously pumped spirit into those who lacked it at times when the boys needed it most. Captained by Paul Quigley, a cheerleader for the past three seasons, the squad consisted of the following: Sem'or.s: PAUL QUIGLEY, Ernm, KNIsLEY. .luniorsf JEANX143 STAHL, Ems KREITZEK. Soplmnmrcs: BIARY Hicaiuxc, SAMUEL DEeKMAN. In all kinds of weather the Cheerleaders were to be found at football games, and no matter what the odds, they led cheers at basketball games. An oak tree stood near-by. and on this tree was a large green leaf. Along came a caravan of cars loaded with boys and equipment.. The leaf seemed to be very niuch interested in the happenings, and after several days had elapsed. and the boys had finished their practicing and were ready to return home. the leaf so liked the group of boys that it decided that it must go. too. Down the mountains into Nlechanicsburg danced the little leaf in a flurry of wind, following the speeding autos. This leaf decided that it would be the spirit of athletics in BI. H. S. By the time football season had ended. the little leaf was becoming brown and was ready to come in out of the cold, biting fall winds. So, into the gym it blew and nestled in one corner of the gym to watch the beginning basketball practices and later the games. lYith the proverbial spring house-cleaning the little leaf was chased from its resting-place. was wafted away in a hlarch gale, and was blown high into the air. It finally came to rest on the Hag-pole in hlemorial Park where it could observe both tennis and baseball. Baseball season wore into llay. and Mechanicsburg High School again proved her ability in another sport. The tennis season also came to an end. and all thc students felt that the spirit of athletics had left HI. H. The first type is esthetic dancing. which develops grace and rhythm. Some of these dances demand toe-dancing, which is very difficult and requires a great deal ol' practice. The sehottische and mazurka dances come in this group. The clog dance is the most popular in the second group of active dances. This is similar to the tap dance but not as intricate nor as violent. The various individual steps may be put together to form a lively dance. These dances were very popular among the Negroes during the C'ivil lVar period on southern plantations. The third group of dances includes the various folk dances. These are really Very lovely when executed in perfect time. Some ballroom dancing has been taught by Nliss Wiilliams. This was taken up as a project by the students of her home room during home-room period. It furnished an opportunity for the boys and girls to become accustomed to dancing together. Its effect may be seen in the increasing: number of under classmen who not only attend school dances, but also lake part. in them. The classes were divided into two sections. according to the type of work done. The first section was the seventh and eighth grades, and the second group was the ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades. plus the few Senior girls who took gym. In the seventh and eighth grades the girls were taught tumbhng, floor work, and dancing. The tumbling consisted of learning to do head stands. hand stands, cartwheels, and many other gymnastics. lhe floor work took in the many exercises which tend to improve the girls' posture. Esthetic, clog, and folk dances were also taught to these students. In the early fall the girls in tl1e seeond group were taught the technique of volleyball. After they attained some skill, they were divided into teams. In the winter the ninth grade girls had tumbling, while the otl1er girls in the upper classes had some clog dancing. They took up the study and tech- nique of basketball and then chose teams and played the game in class. The year was ended by the playing of baseball. When the weather permits, the baseball games are played at the park during gym-class periods. This group plays for the weekly assembly programs and various musical activities. In this manner it has been kept busy providing musical accompaniment for the dramas presented on the hfechanicsburg High School stage, such as the Senior Play, the Junior Play, and the Faculty Play. lVIr. lVIarlin E. hlorrette, a graduate of Ithaca Conservatory of lNIusic, is the director of this organization. Having formerly attended lfechanicsburg High School himself, he is as eager as the student members to maintain the reputation of the School Orchestra. litany of the members have played in the orchestra for several years and may be regarded as experienced musicians. It is probable that many will continue their playing in similar organizations when their high school careers are over. Others will probably continue with music teaching as their profession. Outside organizations may secure their services for productions in the school, and during the year the Orchestra was called upon several times for this purpose. lifr. lllorrettc has organized three orchestras this year?the First Orchestra, the Second Orchestra and the Beginners' Orchestra, each with one regular rehearsal a week. This year, for the first time in its history, the High School Orchestra is entering the Forensic Contest in competition with other Class B High School orchestras. This is something new and offers much experience for a worth-while organization. This Bucket Brigade would stimulate international peace because all persons would be working together instead ol' against each other as today. The Brigade would stand in two lines across the lvnited States. passing buckets ol' water across the continent to the deserts to make gardens out of them, thus not only keeping international peace, but also beautifying our country. Ladies and gentlemen, we take you to the headquarters of the International Bucket Brigade and I, Bob Boyson, in the year ol' 19.30 will show you our organization. As we enter the bucket-making plant, we come to the large rooms of clerks, stenographers, and typists, headed by Helen Albright. Buth Hrackbill, Betty Nailor, Kathryn Bousum, hlary Brown, Frances Vassens, llildred Adams, Ray flem, Ethel Knisely, and Dorothy Dietz. Looking around. we see a huge picture ol' our non- rustable, non-dentable, and non-puncture-proof bucket drawn by Joe Taylor and Twyla. Stanslicld. The bucket is made of secret alloys developed by our chief chemists Bill Jacoby, John Lauver, and Gerald Capp, who because of the carrots and special brain-l'ood administered them by our dietitians, Ruth Fry, lilnora Frey, Opal Cocklin, Klabel Bushey, and Gladys Bowersox, are able to think in a super way. Now let us go into the hospital designed by Ed Stanslield, Russel Kipp and Dick Rickards. It is a huge building with a staff of surgeons, including such famous doctors as Stan Hollinger a11d Wayne Guinivan, assisted by nurses lflvelyn Bollinger, Fmma flocklin, llelen lirb, Anna Gayman, Anna Kapp, Ellen Robinson, and Jane Nveber, the head nurse. Connected to the hospital we have an air-field to Hy our patients from the bucket-line. The field manager is Paul Cress- man, with assistants Dick Nliller and llarlin Anderson, and the pilots are lllark Bider, Lloyd Horst, .Xrt hturray and Jerry Wvolfe. The Bucket Brigade provides all of its planes with air hostesses for the passengers' comfort, and among them are Betty JValters, Florence Nlartin, Mary Bowen. and Evelyn YYidder. Plane management at the field is headed by Bob Shandelmeir. Bob Ilall. Bob Zimmerman and Harold Zimmerman who overhaul the planes and engines. to say nothing ol' all of our super buckets. The airport is equipped with the latest television and radio apparatus and the best operators. namely. Bill Paul, Frank Douglass. and Boyd flarmany.
